'Shielding Criminals?' Trinamool Raps MP Over Rape Remark, He Claps Back

The Trinamool Congress, facing a relentless attack from the BJP over the links of the main accused in the Kolkata law student rape case to its student wing, found itself sinking deeper into a quagmire on Saturday after one of its own MPs decided to train his guns on the party and asked whether it was supporting leaders who are shielding criminals. 

Barely had the Trinamool Congress begun recovering after distancing itself from Monojit Mishra, the main accused in Wednesday's rape of the student at the South Calcutta Law College, when its MP Kalyan Banerjee's comments gave the opposition ammunition to launch a renewed offensive against it on Saturday. 

The party censured him, but Mr Banerjee decided not to back down and go on the warpath instead.

In remarks seen as an attempt to downplay the seriousness of the crime and deflect accountability, Mr Banerjee had said, "What can be done if a friend rapes his friend? Will the police be in schools? This was done by students to another student. Who will protect her (the survivor)? Who does all this criminality and molestation? Some men do it. So, who should women fight against? Women should fight against these perverted men," he said on Saturday.  
 
"I am saying the same thing again and again. Whoever has done it must be arrested immediately. But if a friend rapes a friend, how can that be corruption? The condition of safety and security is the same everywhere.  As long as the mindset of men remains this way, these incidents will keep occurring," he added.

MLA Madan Mitra deepened the wound when he appeared to blame the survivor herself.

"If the girl had not gone there, this incident would not have happened. If she had told someone where she was going, taken a couple of friends with her, it would not have happened. The people who committed the crime took advantage of the situation," Mr Mitra said. 

Facing backlash, the Trinamool Congress condemned both the MP and MLA's remarks and attempted to distance itself from them.

"The remarks made by MP Kalyan Banerjee and MLA Madan Mitra concerning the heinous crime at South Calcutta Law College were made in their personal capacities. The party unequivocally disassociates itself from their statements and strongly condemns the same. These views do not reflect the position of the party in any manner whatsoever," the party said in a statement. 

"Our stance remains resolute; we have zero tolerance for crimes against women and demand the strictest possible punishment for all those involved in this heinous crime," it added.

Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra also shared the statement on X and said that while misogyny cuts across party lines, what makes the Trinamool Congress different is that it condemns "disgusting comments no matter who makes them".

Guns Blazing

Mr Banerjee responded on Saturday evening and, mincing no words, hit out at his own party, appearing to accuse it of backing leaders who shield criminals. 

"I completely disagree with the post made by @AITCofficial  on X. Are they indirectly supporting the leaders who are shielding these criminals? Mere academic statements won't bring any real change unless immediate action is taken against those leaders directly responsible. What's even more unfortunate is that some of the leaders who emerged after 2011 are themselves under question in such crimes," the MP wrote on X.

Mr Banerjee also said some in the party lacked the "moral and intellectual alignment" to understand what he had said.

US Teen Plunges Off Cliff While Hallucinating Due To Altitude Sickness

A 14-year-old boy in the US is in a medically induced coma after walking off a 120-foot slope right in front of his father while hallucinating due to altitude sickness. According to the New York Post, the boy, identified as Zane, was hiking with his father, Ryan Wach, on June 10 when the incident took place. He suffered severe head trauma from the fall and remains comatose. The teen also broke an ankle, a finger and part of his pelvis. 

According to the father, the 14-year-old described seeing "snowmen and Kermit the Frog" before walking off the slope. The frightening events unfolded as the father-son duo made their way down Mount Whitney in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. The father said that initially, he had no doubts about his son's ability to handle the hike, as he had hiking experience and was an active teen who competed in distance running, swimming and triathlons. 

"The idea was that this would be kind of like his introduction to mountaineering," Mr Wach said, per the outlet. However, as the pair were on the journey up the mountain, the 14-year-old slowly started exhibiting symptoms of altitude sickness, the father said. 

He shared that he noticed his son was having issues, but they had already finished the toughest parts of the hike, so they decided to take an easier trail to ensure a safer seven-mile descent back to their car. 

But this is when things took an unexpected turn. As the duo were heading toward the trailhead, the father said that his son started to "experience some hallucinations". "He knew he was hallucinating," Mr Wach said, adding, "He said he saw things like snowmen and Kermit the Frog." 

The father said he was keeping a close eye on his son throughout the trial, and at one point, Zane also looked "considerably better". But about an hour later, the 14-year-old again started acting strangely and began doubting "reality," the father said. "My best guess is a combination of exhaustion, sleep deprivation, probably some dehydration, and lasting effects from the altitude sickness. But he essentially started to doubt reality," he continued. 

Moments later, the pair again stopped as Zane told his father they had "already finished the hike multiple times over." "It was completely bizarre," Mr Wach recalled. "He told me he couldn't tell if he was dreaming or not, and he would shake his head in disbelief, like, 'This is not real.' Like he was in the movie 'Inception' or something," he said. 

The 14-year-old's deteriorating state of mind then prompted a separate group of hikers nearby to call for a search and rescue team to get him down the mountain. But around the same time, things went from bad to worse. "He almost seemed like he was sleepwalking. He started dragging his feet and stopped in his tracks. He didn't want to go on," the father said.

According to Mr Wach, his son started making erratic movements toward a ledge near the trail with a steep, jagged slope, but he grabbed him before he could go over. Later, he again tried to move toward the slope but was stopped by his father. 

At this moment, the father felt overwhelmed and became emotional. "I had to wipe away tears. I was holding my hands to my eyes, and he walked off again," the father recalled. 

"This time, I didn't hear it until he was about at the edge, and when I went to reach for him, he was 10 feet away from me. I couldn't get him, and he walked off the edge," he said. 

The 14-year-old fell an estimated 120 feet down the slope before hitting the ground. 

It took around six hours for the rescue teams to get Zane off the mountain. He was eventually airlifted to the hospital. 

Given the extent of the fall, doctors said it was "fairly miraculous" that the teen wasn't injured further, his father said. Zane is "improving" and briefly opened his eyes on Wednesday, but "still has a long way to go," he added.

What Pilot Of Delhi-Bound Air India Flight Said Before U-Turn To Hong Kong

A Hong Kong-Delhi Air India flight made a U-turn as a precautionary measure on Monday after nearly an hour of take-off. The captain of Flight AI315 suspected a technical issue and requested to land back at the Hong Kong International Airport.

An audio of the conversation between the pilot and the Air Traffic Control (ATC) was posted on the traffic control monitoring website LiveATC.net. The pilot told the ATC that "for technical reasons, sir, we would like to stay closer to Hong Kong, maybe we will come back to Hong Kong and sort out the problem," according to the audio clip.

"We don't want to continue further," the pilot is heard saying in the same audio clip.

The AI315 took off from Hong Kong at about 12:20 pm, reached a height of 22,000 feet, and then began to drop, as per AirNav Radar.

The aircraft, a Boeing Dreamliner 787-8, returned to Hong Kong International Airport after requesting local standby at 1 pm (0500 GMT) and "landed safely at around 1:15 pm", according to Reuters.

"AI315 operating from Hong Kong to Delhi on 16 June 2025 air-returned to Hong Kong shortly after take-off due to a technical issue. The flight landed safely in Hong Kong and is undergoing checks as a matter of abundant precaution," Air India said in a statement.

Alternative arrangements have been planned to fly the passengers to their destination, Delhi, at the earliest, the airline added. "We are providing all necessary on-ground assistance to the passengers to minimise the inconvenience caused by this unforeseen disruption," it added.

The Delhi-bound Air India flight's U-turn came days after another Boeing Dreamliner 787-8 aircraft, carrying 242 people, crashed onto the doctors' hostel of a medical college in Ahmedabad. At least 274 people, including 241 of the 242 on board the London-bound flight were killed in what was the deadliest aviation disaster in India's history.

The Government of India has constituted a panel to probe the crash. The committee, with senior officials from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), and independent aviation safety experts, will investigate possible technical failures, maintenance records, and crew actions in the lead-up to the incident.

Satellite Images Show Damage At Iran's Nuclear Site After Israel Strikes

Satellite images released by Maxar Technologies revealed detailed visual evidence of the destruction caused by Israel's Operation Rising Lion against Iran, a targeted military operation to roll back the Iranian threat of nuclear weapons to Israel's very survival.

Israel has accused Iran of pursuing a nuclear weapons programme in defiance of global warnings, pointing to enriched uranium stockpiles capable of producing multiple nuclear bombs. Iran has long insisted its nuclear programme is for civilian purposes only.

The newly released high-resolution satellite images show clear before-and-after comparisons of damage at Iran's key nuclear facility and the resultant damage.

Israel's operation included strikes on Iran's underground uranium enrichment sites at Natanz and Fordow, and a uranium conversion facility at Isfahan, according to the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), citing information from Iranian officials.

IAEA, also citing Iranian officials, said on Friday that a key, above-ground component of Iran's Natanz nuclear site had been destroyed.

After Israel launched its strikes, IAEA chief Rafael Grossi said that nuclear facilities "must never be attacked" and that targeting Iranian sites could have "grave consequences for the people of Iran, the region, and beyond". He added that no radiation leak had been detected so far at the facility. 

There was "extensive" damage to the site's power supply, according to a report from the Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS), a US-based organisation specialising in nuclear proliferation, which analysed satellite images.

A loss of electricity to underground facilities can significantly damage the site's centrifuges, the machines used to enrich uranium, the ISIS institute said.

The nuclear facility at Natanz, located some 220 kilometers southeast of Tehran, is the country's main enrichment site. To defend against airstrikes, a part of the facility on Iran's Central plateau is underground. It operates multiple cascades, or groups of centrifuges working together to more quickly enrich uranium.  

In the past, Natanz has been targeted with a computer virus, Stuxnet, some 15 years ago, and with sabotage and explosions, attributed to Israel, as recently as 2021. 

The nuclear facility at Fordo is located some 100 kilometers southwest of Tehran. It also hosts centrifuge cascades, but isn't as big a facility as Natanz. Iran has said the damage to Fordow, south of Tehran, was minor. But experts said it is impossible at this stage to determine the impact the strikes might have had on uranium stockpiles believed to be stored around the Isfahan site.

Buried under a mountain and protected by anti-aircraft batteries, Fordo, near the city of Qum, appears designed to withstand airstrikes. Its construction began at least in 2007, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency, although Iran only informed the UN nuclear watchdog about the facility in 2009 after the US and allied Western intelligence agencies became aware of its existence.

Emphasising that the fight is not against Iranians, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu said, "Our fight is not with you. Our fight is with the brutal dictatorship that has oppressed you for 46 years. I believe that the day of your liberation is near. And when that happens, the great friendship between our two ancient peoples will flourish once again."

He further stated that Israel will not let the world's most dangerous regime get the world's most dangerous weapons, adding that Iran plans to give those weapons, nuclear weapons, to its terrorist proxies. He stressed that if that happens, it would make the nightmare of nuclear terrorism all too real, and would bring that nuclear nightmare to the cities of Europe and eventually to America.

Israel pounded Iran for a second day on Saturday and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said its campaign would intensify dramatically, while Tehran called off nuclear talks that Washington had held out as the only way to halt the bombing.

A day after Israel wiped out the top echelon of Iran's military command with a surprise attack on its old foe, it appeared to have hit Iran's oil and gas industry for the first time, with Iranian state media reporting a blaze at a gas field.

Netanyahu said Israel's strikes had set back Iran's nuclear programme possibly by years and rejected international calls for restraint.

"We will hit every site and every target of the Ayatollahs' regime, and what they have felt so far is nothing compared with what they will be handed in the coming days," he said in a video message.

In Tehran, Iranian authorities said around 60 people, including 29 children, were killed in an attack on a housing complex, with more strikes reported across the country. Israel said it had attacked more than 150 targets.

Iran had launched its own retaliatory missile volley on Friday night, killing at least three people in Israel. Air raid sirens sent Israelis into shelters as waves of missiles streaked across the sky and interceptors rose to meet them.

US President Donald Trump has lauded Israel's strikes and warned Iran of much worse to come. He said it was not too late to halt the Israeli campaign, but only if Tehran quickly accepted a sharp downgrading of its nuclear programme at talks with Washington due to be held on Sunday.

Host Oman confirmed on Saturday that the next round of talks had been scrapped. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said holding talks was unjustifiable while Israel's "barbarous" attacks were ongoing.

In the first apparent attack to hit Iran's energy infrastructure, Iranian media reported a fire on Saturday after Israel bombed the South Pars gas field in southern Bushehr province.

Worries about potential disruption to the region's oil exports had already boosted the price of crude by about 7% on Friday, even though Israel had spared Iran's oil and gas industry on the campaign's first day.

An Iranian general, Esmail Kosari, said Tehran was reviewing whether to close the Strait of Hormuz, controlling access to the Gulf for tankers.

With Israel saying its operation could last weeks, and urging Iran's people to rise up against their Islamic clerical rulers, fears have grown of a regional conflagration dragging in outside powers.

"If (Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali) Khamenei continues to fire missiles at the Israeli home front, Tehran will burn," Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said.

Tehran warned Israel's allies that their military bases in the region would come under fire too if they helped shoot down Iranian missiles.

However, 20 months of war in Gaza and a conflict in Lebanon last year have decimated Tehran's strongest regional proxies, Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, reducing its options for retaliation.

NIGHT OF BLASTS AND FEAR IN ISRAEL AND IRAN

Iran's overnight fusillade included hundreds of ballistic missiles and drones, an Israeli official said. Three people, including a man and a woman, were killed and dozens wounded, the ambulance service said.

In Rishon LeZion, south of Tel Aviv, emergency services rescued a baby girl trapped in a house hit by a missile, police said.

In the western suburb of Ramat Gan, near Ben Gurion Airport, Linda Grinfeld described her apartment being damaged: "We were sitting in the shelter, and then we heard such a boom. It was awful."

The Israeli military said it had intercepted surface-to-surface Iranian missiles as well as drones, and that two rockets had been fired from Gaza.

In Iran, Israel's two days of strikes destroyed residential apartment buildings, killing families and neighbours as apparent collateral damage in strikes targeting scientists and senior officials in their beds.

Iran said 78 people had been killed on the first day and scores more on the second day, including 60 when a missile brought down a 14-storey apartment block in Tehran, where 29 of the dead were children.

State TV broadcast pictures of a building flattened into debris and the facade of several upper storeys lying sideways in the street, while slabs of concrete dangled from a neighbouring building.

"Smoke and dust were filling all the house and we couldn't breathe," 45-year-old Tehran resident Mohsen Salehi told Iranian news agency WANA after an overnight air strike woke his family.

Fars News agency said two projectiles had hit Mehrabad airport, located inside the capital, which is both civilian and military.

Israel sees Iran's nuclear programme as a threat to its existence, and said the bombardment was designed to avert the last steps to production of a nuclear weapon.

A military official on Saturday said Israel had caused significant damage to Iran's nuclear facilities at Natanz and Isfahan, but had not so far taken on another uranium enrichment site, Fordow, dug into a mountain.

The official said Israel had "eliminated the highest commanders of their military leadership" and had killed nine nuclear scientists who were "main sources of knowledge, main forces driving forward the (nuclear) programme".

Tehran insists the programme is entirely civilian and that it does not seek an atomic bomb. However, the UN nuclear watchdog reported it this week as violating obligations under the global non-proliferation treaty.

Australia skipper Pat Cummins proved yet again why he is the man made for big stages. In the ICC World Test Championship final against South Africa, Cummins bagged a 6-for on Day 2 of the title-decider, pulling the game in his team's favour. However, en route to a heroic performance, Cummins also found himself in the center of an eventful episode that saw him collide with Proteas star Kyle Verreynne after hitting him on the pads in front of the stumps. However, shortly after, the two bumped against each other and fell down.

After an inswinging delivery from Cummins hit Verreynne, the batter ran for a single while the bowler turned his face towards the umpire and began appealing for LBW. Without realising that the South African batter was also running in the same line, Cummins bumped into him as both fell down.

Cummins finished with figures of 6-28 as he reached 300 career Test wickets and secured a coveted place on the Lord's honours board with a five-wicket haul.

"He does it time and time again," said fellow pacer Mitchell Starc of Cummins. "He led from the front before he was captain, and now as captain as well. The quality and skills he has in his pocket -- I'm thrilled for him to get a bagful. To go to 300 is a special effort."

South Africa lost their last five wickets for 12 runs as Cummins ripped through the batting order.

Only South Africa captain Temba Bavuma (36) and David Bedingham (45) offered meaningful resistance during a fifth-wicket stand of 64.  

As the match starts on Day 3, Australia would start on 144/8, with a lead of 218 runs over South Africa.

Couple On Honeymoon Missing After Car Falls 1,000 Feet Into Sikkim River

A newly married couple from Uttar Pradesh's Pratapgarh district went to Sikkim for their honeymoon. 15 days on, they are yet to return home.

Kaushalendra Pratap Singh and Ankita Singh, who got married on May 5, left for Sikkim on May 24. On the evening of May 29, what was supposed to be a blissful vacation turned into a nightmare for the couple and their families. The car they were travelling in fell 1,000 feet into the Teesta river in the landslide-hit Mangan district.

The car skidded off the road near Munsithang along the Lachen-Lachung highway.

Among the nine others travelling with them, one died and two were injured. Eight passengers are still missing. The driver, Passang Denu Sherpa of Singhik in North Sikkim, died on the spot while Swayam Supratim Nayak and Sairaj Jena from Odisha were rescued on the night of the accident.

Kaushalendra Pratap Singh's father, Sher Bahadur Singh, is in Sikkim to look for his son and daughter-in-law.

"My son and daughter-in-law are missing after their vehicle fell into a stream in Sikkim. I appeal to UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to request his Sikkim counterpart to expedite the search and rescue operations," Mr Singh, with folded hands, appealed through a video message.

He said that he would not return home till he finds them.

"It's our eighth day here. We visited the accident spot several times. Whatever things have been recovered from the spot, nothing belongs to my son and his wife. I won't return home till I find them. I request everyone to pray for the lives of my son and daughter-in-law," he added.

The search for the missing eight tourists is being carried out by personnel of the NDRF, Fire and Emergency Services, Forest Department, Tourism Department, TAAS (Travel Agents Association of Sikkim), and police. However, bad weather is hindering the rescue work.

Among the other missing tourists, four are from Odisha - Ajit Kumar Nayak, Sunita Nayak, Sahil Jena and Itshiri Jena and two from Tripura - Debjyoti Joy Dev and Swapnanil Deb.
