What Is Jakhiya Aloo: The Pahadi Dish Served At Rashtrapati Bhavan Banquet
At a state banquet hosted at Rashtrapati Bhavan on January 27, 2026, the spotlight was firmly on the Himalayas. Curated as a regional showcase for visiting European Union leaders, the menu drew from the food traditions of India's mountain states and featured various high-altitude ingredients. The meal presented a side of Indian cuisine that rarely appears at formal diplomatic tables. One of the delights served was Jakhiya Aloo, a simple Kumaoni potato dish cooked with mustard oil and a native hill spice. It was heartening to see a simple home-style treat served at such a diplomatic event. Given how wholesome and delicious it is, you should also consider trying it at home. Find out more about it below:
What Is Jakhiya Aloo?

Jakhiya Aloo is a traditional potato preparation from the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. It relies on boiled or parboiled potatoes cooked in mustard oil and tempered with jakhiya seeds, green chillies, turmeric, and salt. There are no onions, no tomatoes, no garam masala. The flavours are comforting and restrained. It is a dish meant to nourish and is often served alongside dal, rice, or mandua roti.
In hill households, this dish appears frequently, especially in colder months. It's filling without being heavy, comforting without being indulgent. It travels well too, which is why variations of it often find their way into packed meals for long journeys.
What Is Jakhiya?

Jakhiya is the soul of the dish. These tiny, dark brown seeds are native to the Himalayan region and are often mistaken for mustard or cumin by those unfamiliar with them. Unlike mustard seeds, jakhiya doesn't burst open aggressively. It pops gently, releasing a warm, nutty aroma with subtle bitterness. That behaviour matters. The spice perfumes the oil without overpowering it, creating a base that feels rounded rather than sharp.
Easy Recipe For Jakhiya Aloo
Ingredients:
- 500 g baby potatoes (boiled, peeled, roughly cubed)
- 2 tbsp mustard oil
- 2 tsp jakhiya seeds
- 1/2 tsp asafoetida
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 4 dried red chillies (broken)
- 1/2 cup chopped coriander leaves
- 4-6 garlic cloves (pounded)
- 1 tbsp lime juice
- 1-2 tsp salt, or to taste
Method:
- Heat mustard oil in a heavy-bottomed kadhai until it just begins to smoke; lower the heat.
- Add jakhiya seeds and let them crackle gently for 20-30 seconds.
- Add garlic, asafoetida, red chillies, turmeric and salt.
- Add the potatoes, lightly pressing a few pieces to roughen them. Mix to coat them well.
- Cover and cook on low heat for around 5 minutes, until the potatoes are lightly crisp at the edges.
- Lightly stir the ingredients. Incorporate coriander leaves and top with lime juice. The jakhiya aloo is ready to be served.
Like most home dishes, Jakhiya Aloo changes subtly from kitchen to kitchen. Some households may add other vegetables too. Some may add ingredients like ginger for added flavour. The core technique remains the same, but proportions and textures vary.
If you love potatoes and want to enjoy a different recipe this season, we highly recommend Jakhiya Aloo. Try it soon!

Mahesh Bhatt Reacts To Arijit Singh's Retirement From Playback Singing
Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt has reflected on Arijit Singh's decision to step away from playback singing.
What Mahesh Bhatt Said
In a conversation with The Telegraph Online, he said, "At the height of their powers, some artists step away - not from art but from noise. They choose silence, solitude, and truth over constant performance."
Recalling his first encounter with a young Arijit Singh during the making of Mohit Suri's Aashiqui 2, which Bhatt produced, the veteran filmmaker shared a vivid memory that has stayed with him over the years.
"When I heard about Arijit's decision to stop singing for others, I was unexpectedly taken back to an afternoon at Super Sound Service in Khar - the old T-Series building - where the journey of Aashiqui 2 truly began. We were releasing the music, and Arijit was called to sing Tum Hi Ho," Bhatt said.
He went on to describe the defining moment that marked the beginning of Arijit's extraordinary rise. "A shy self-effacing young man walked up to the dais and sang a song that would quietly mesmerise the world. That moment became a springboard into a life that would never be the same again," Bhatt added.
Arijit Singh Announces Retirement
In an emotional note, Arijit reflected on his journey as a playback singer and wrote, "Hello, Happy new year to all. I want to thank you all for giving me so much of love all these years as listeners. I am happy to announce that I am not gonna be taking any new assignments as a playback vocalist from now on. I am calling it off. It was a wonderful journey."
Arijit first came into public attention through the reality show Fame Gurukul.
Over the years, he has delivered some of Hindi cinema's most unforgettable songs, including Channa Mereya, Hawayein, Raabta, Hamari Adhuri Kahani, Kesariya, Satranga, O Maahi and Tu Hai Toh, among many others.

US Deploys Aircraft Carrier In Middle Eastern Waters Amid Tensions With Iran
A US naval strike group led by an aircraft carrier has deployed to Middle Eastern waters, the United States said Monday, as Tehran warned it was ready to hit back at any American attack launched in response to a crackdown on anti-government protests.
A US-based rights group said on Monday that it had confirmed the deaths of nearly 6,000 people in the wave of protests suppressed by Iran's security forces, but emphasised the actual toll could be several times higher.
The protests started in late December, driven by economic grievances, but turned into a mass movement against the Islamic republic, with huge street demonstrations for several days from January 8.
But rights groups have accused authorities of quelling the movement with unprecedented violence, shooting into crowds of protesters under the cover of an internet shutdown that has now lasted 18 days -- the longest Iran has ever imposed.
The clerical leadership who took power after the 1979 Islamic revolution remains in place despite the protests, with many opponents of the system looking to outside intervention as the most likely driver of change.
US President Donald Trump has previously threatened to step in, saying last week that Washington was sending a "massive fleet" to the region "just in case".
The deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group dramatically boosts American firepower in the region.
The United States backed and briefly joined Israel's 12-day war against Iran in June, and while Trump last week appeared to step back from his threats of new military intervention, he has never ruled the option out.
The Lincoln's strike group has arrived in the region, US Central Command said in a post on X, adding the ships were "currently deployed to the Middle East to promote regional security and stability".
'Regret-inducing response'
Iran's foreign ministry warned on Monday of a "comprehensive and regret-inducing response to any aggression".
Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Iran was "confident in its own capabilities".
In apparent reference to the Lincoln, he added: "The arrival of such a battleship is not going to affect Iran's determination and seriousness to defend the Iranian nation."
Meanwhile, a new anti-US billboard has appeared in the central Enghelab Square in Tehran that appears to show an American aircraft carrier being destroyed.
"If you sow the wind, you will reap the whirlwind," its English-language caption reads.
State news agency IRNA quoted the commander of the Iranian navy Shahram Irani as saying on Monday: "Iran's naval power is not merely defensive but also acts as an anchor of stability in the region."
In Lebanon, Iran-backed Shiite group Hezbollah, whose capabilities and leadership were severely degraded in a war with Israel in 2024, organised a rally in support of the Islamic republic featuring an address by its leader Naim Qassem, who warned "a war on Iran this time will ignite the region".
Iran's Gulf neighbour the United Arab Emirates, which hosts a US airbase, said it would not allow attacks on Iran to be launched from its territory.
- Rising toll -
NGOs tracking the toll from the crackdown have said their task has been impeded by the internet shutdown, warning that confirmed figures are likely to be far lower than the actual number.
The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) said it had confirmed that 5,848 people had been killed, including 209 members of the security forces. But the group added it was still investigating another 17,091 possible fatalities.
At least 41,283 people have been arrested, it said.
Giving their first official toll from the protests, Iranian authorities last week said 3,117 people were killed, the majority of whom it described as members of the security forces or innocent bystanders killed by "rioters".
Confirming that the internet blackout remains in place, monitor Netblocks said the shutdown was "obscuring the extent of a deadly crackdown on civilians".
"Gaps in the filternet are being tightened to limit circumvention while whitelisted regime accounts promote the Islamic Republic's narrative," it added.
Over the weekend, Persian-language TV channel Iran International, which is based outside the country, said more than 36,500 Iranians were killed by security forces from January 8 to 9, citing reports, documents and sources. It was not immediately possible to verify the report.
Activists have said that the Revolutionary Guards, a military force separate from the regular army with the mandate of keeping the Islamic revolution alive, took a frontline position in putting down the protests.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani on Monday urged the European Union to list the Guards as a "terrorist organisation", as Canada and the United States have done, saying the "the losses suffered by the civilian population during the protests demand a clear response".

India Break Pakistan's Record In Big Win Over New Zealand In 2nd T20I
Ishan Kishan justified his national recall with a sensational 32-ball-76 while captain Suryakumar Yadav scored his first fifty after 23 innings as India decimated New Zealand by seven wickets for a 2-0 lead in the five-match T20 series in Raipur on Friday. Ahead of the all important T20 World Cup, it all seems to be falling in place for India with Suryakumar (82 not out off 37) overcoming a prolonged lean patch and Kishan emerging as a destructive top-order enforcer. India were expected to chase 209 on a belter of a pitch but not with such ease after losing Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson by the second over of the chase.
Suryakumar and Shivam Dube (36 not out off 18) closed out the game in a canter as India gunned down the target in 15.2 overs.
Full-member teams chasing down 200-plus targets with most balls to spare -
28 balls - India vs New Zealand in Raipur (Target: 209)
24 balls - Pakistan vs New Zealand in Auckland in 2025 (Target: 205)
23 balls - Australia vs West Indies in Basseterre in 2025 (Target: 215)
Kishan, back in the side after a gap of more than two years, went berserk from ball one and ended with 11 fours and four sizzling sixes.
Kishan's knock actually would keep Sanju Samson on tenterhooks after back-to-back failures as Tilak Varma, when fit would take that number three position. In such a situation, Kishan stacking up necessary numbers could spell doom for the Kerala man.
His special knock included a flurry of pick up shots, pulls and even a reverse sweep.
Such was the timing and impact of the innings that Kishan got a hug from his skipper after mistiming a slog sweep off Ish Sodhi's bowling.
Suryakumar maintained the momentum generated by Kishan in the able company of Dube, who too collected his fair share of sixes.
At the start of the chase, Samson could not carry on for long despite being dropped at deep square leg on the second ball of the innings.
The pressure piled up on India when trump card Abhishek's mistimed flick off Jacob Duffy to be holed out at deep square leg.
The counter attack from Kishan tilted the game in favour of India.
The captaincy of Mitchell Santner left a lot to be desired as his decision to give Zak Foulkes the third over after two tight overs by Henry and Duffy, left a lot to be desired.
Earlier, Kuldeep Yadav regained form with two timely strikes in the middle overs as India limited New Zealand to 208 for 6.
Rachin Ravindra (44 off 26) and skipper Mitchell Santner (47 not out off 27) took the attack to India in different phases of the game to ensure New Zealand got past 200-run mark.
Expecting heavy dew, skipper Suryakumar Yadav predictably opted to bowl with Harshit Rana and Kuldeep Yadav playing instead of injured Axar Patel and rested Jasprit Bumrah.
Devon Conway (19 off 9) and Tim Seifert (24 off 13), fresh off BBL, got the Black Caps off to a flying start before falling in quick succession. Conway, who has been caught in the slip cordon multiple times on the white ball tour thus far, went on the offensive in the first over against Arshdeep Singh despite being beaten by an outswinger on the very first ball of the match.
Conway dispatched the left-arm seamer for three crisp fours and a sliced six over backward point for an 18-run over.
Seifert smashed four boundaries off Arshdeep's following over that also went for 18 runs. Harshit Rana was introduced in the fourth over and he struck off his second ball, dismissing Conway for the fourth time in as many innings including his dominance over the left-handers in the ODI series.
Rachin Ravindra (44 off 23) came in and played some spectacular strokes before getting out on a wide ball from Kuldeep.
However, the Indian wrist spinner's first victim was the dangerous Glenn Phillips who could not connect the googly and was caught at backward point.
At 111/3 in 10 overs on a true surface, New Zealand looked on course for a total well over 200 but India were able to pull things back. Shivam Dube, the seventh bowling option introduced in the 12th over, got rid of the in-form Daryl Mitchell off a slower ball to build pressure on the opposition.
Santer ensued his team got 57 runs off the last five overs with a flurry of boundaries and a straight six off Hardik Pandya.

Video Shows How Northeast Trains Stay Clean, Passengers Collect Trash In Bags
Citizens exhibiting a disregard for cleanliness, especially in public places, is a topic of intense discussion in India. The passenger trains often witness the worst side of Indian travellers who litter without a care and unload the responsibility of maintaining sanitation on the authorities. While debates about the lack of civic sense continue, the North East region of the country has once again led from the front and highlighted how a progressive society should operate.
Shared on Instagram by a user named @daily.passenger, the widely shared video shows passengers on the Aizawl-Guwahati train taking personal initiative to keep their surroundings clean. They were seen diligently collecting their waste in bags, demonstrating a high level of civic awareness without needing reminders or enforcement from the authorities.
"People were tying their waste in small bags and hanging them neatly beside their seats. No announcements. No instructions from the railways. Just a habit," read the caption accompanying the video.
"As someone from North India, this made me reflect deeply. We often complain about dirty trains and roads, but rarely question our own behaviour. Clean spaces do not stay clean because of authorities alone. They stay clean because people choose to care. There is so much to learn from Mizoram and the North East. Respect for public spaces is not a campaign. It is a way of life."

'So Much To Learn'
As the video went viral, social media users lauded the passengers for keeping the train clean and hoped that passengers in other regions of the country would learn from their behaviour.
"There is so much to learn for all of us from our fellow Indians of the North East," said one user, while another added: "It's not about the area but the civic sense of people.
A third commented: "This is great to see from them. I'm from Tamil Nadu. I appreciate that and hopefully it is followed across India. I request one thing that the trash is desposed in a safe way, instead of throwing it out on the tracks @irctc.official."
A fourth said: "We were told since childhood to carry our waste in our pockets or bags and throw it into a dustbin when we see one."

Mumbai-Based Comedian Flags E-Challan Scam, Exposes Fake Site That Looks Real
A Mumbai-based comedian has shared an incident when he, almost, fell victim to a 'sophisticated' e-challan scam, where fraudsters created a fake portal mimicking the official Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) website. The comedian, whose name is Shridhar V, posted screenshots on X (formerly Twitter), which showed a message about a pending challan.
The fake portal, designed to look authentic, tricked the comedian into entering personal and financial details. The scammers aimed at stealing sensitive information and money.
The screenshot showed a text message for a fake speeding challan. Notably, the message was from a normal 10-digit number. He clicked on the link, and the URL of this page was 'echallan.pasvahan.icu', but the 'echallan.parivahan.gov.in'. The spelling or parivahan was also wrong on the fake portal as it was 'pasvahan'.

Such scams have become so common in India, attempting to dupe hundreds of people every day. To curb such activities, the authorities advise citizens to verify such messages through official channels and avoid sharing personal details on unverified websites. Always check the URL and ensure it's the official MoRTH website (.gov.in domain).
Social Media Reaction
The post resonated with many on social media, with some users sharing their personal experiences, while other suggesting what not to do in such a scenario. "Not sure why you would click that link which obviously is explicit that it is a scam. I receive this regularly and I ignore this. But I understand how some people might fall prey. Good to put this out," one user praised Shridhar for highlighting the issue, while some simply suggested to always check the number, as the government will never send such messaged using normal numbers.

'Time For New Leadership': Trump Calls For End To Khamenei's Rule In Iran
US President Donald Trump called for an end to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's 37-year-old rule. "It's time to look for new leadership in Iran," he told Politico on Saturday after the country in the Middle East was rocked by weeks of protests against the Islamic Republic.
"The best decision he ever made was not hanging more than 800 people two days ago," Trump told the publication.
Trump argued that Iran's leadership relies on repression and violence to run the country. He blamed Khamenei for "complete destruction of the country" and for using unprecedented levels of violence.
"In order to keep the country functioning – even though that function is a very low level – the leadership should focus on running his country properly, like I do with the United States, and not killing people by the thousands in order to keep control," Trump said.
He added, "Leadership is about respect, not fear and death."
Calling Khamenei a "sick man", Trump said that it is because of the leadership of Iran that it is the "worst place to live anywhere".
What Ayatollah Khamenei said
Trump's remarks come soon after Khamenei vowed to "break the back of the seditionists" involved in the protest. He also blamed Trump for "casualties" during the anti-government demonstrations in Iran.
"We do not intend to lead the country to war, but we will not spare domestic criminals," Khamenei told supporters during an address marking a religious holiday. He said that "international criminals" would also not be spared punishment.
Iran's authorities have called the protests "terrorist" operations and "riots" and claim that it was an "American conspiracy" to dominate Iran militarily, politically and economically.
Trump had warned that if Iran killed protesters, the US would intervene militarily. He also encouraged the protesters to take over state institutions by saying, "help is on the way." However, that did not happen, and in the meantime, security forces killed at least 3,428 protesters.
What Reza Pahlavi said
Exiled Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi had also urged Iranians across the country to "raise your voices in anger and protest with our national slogans". Many protesters have chanted the name of Pahlavi, whose pro-Western father fled in 1979 in the Islamic revolution.
Pahlavi, seeking to touch a nerve with Trump, called on him not to be like his Democratic predecessor Barack Obama, who negotiated with Tehran. "I believe that President Trump is a man of his word and ultimately he will stand with the Iranian people as he has said," Pahlavi said when asked if Trump had given false hope.
Pahlavi told reporters that he wants to lead a transition to a secular democracy, with a popular referendum to choose the next system of government, and said, "I will return to Iran."

Rehman Dakait Akshaye Khanna To Return In Dhurandhar 2 On Fan Demand
Dhurandhar's massive success is now directly influencing the creative course of its sequel. Filmmaker Aditya Dhar has decided to return to the editing table with Dhurandhar 2, planning an additional shoot that will bring Akshaye Khanna back into the fold after the unexpected and viral response to his character in the first film.
While Dhurandhar went on to deliver a historic box office performance, one of its biggest post-release talking points was Rehman Dakait. Akshaye Khanna's portrayal of the character struck a chord with audiences, triggering widespread online chatter, fan theories, and demands for more screen time.
From menacing stillness to pivotal dialogue beats, the character quickly became one of the film's most discussed elements.
Adding to the buzz was Akshaye's appearance in the song Fa9la by Flipperachi. His brief but striking dance moves in the track went viral across platforms, further amplifying the popularity of Rehman Dakait and reinforcing the audience's appetite to see more of the character.
Sources tell us that Dhurandhar 2, which had already completed its principal shoot, is now set for selective reshoots. The additional filming, expected to begin towards the end of this month, will be supervised by Aditya Dhar himself and will specifically involve Akshaye Khanna.
What makes this move particularly intriguing is Rehman Dakait's fate in the first film. The character dies in Dhurandhar, making his return in the sequel both a narrative challenge and an opportunity. How Aditya Dhar, known for his sharp writing and layered storytelling, chooses to navigate this is now a key point of curiosity.
Industry chatter suggests that the sequel may lean heavily on flashbacks to expand Rehman Dakait's backstory, his rise, and the choices that defined him.
Dhurandhar 2 is scheduled for a theatrical release on March 19, 2026. With the sequel already locked and targeted additions now underway, the makers appear focused on strengthening the universe rather than altering its core.

Bangladesh Cricket Chief Speaks On "Alternate Indian Venue" Amid Venue Row
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Aminul Islam Bulbul on Friday said the board is yet to receive any response from the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding its concerns over playing at venues in India for the upcoming T20 World Cup, reiterating that the BCB's position remains unchanged. Bangladesh has expressed reluctance to tour India for the tournament, scheduled to begin on February 7, and has sought to shift its matches to co-host Sri Lanka, citing security concerns.
The BCB's apprehensions followed the release of Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman from IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders on the instructions of the BCCI for unspecified reasons, amid reports of attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh.
"We haven't yet received any reply from the ICC. We have sent all the attachments and proofs of our concern," Bulbul told media persons here.
The BCB chief said the board has clearly conveyed its position to the global governing body and stressed that moving matches to another Indian city would not address their concerns.
"Any alternate Indian venue, at the end of the day, is an Indian venue. You all know that no unilateral decision can be taken, and we have to abide by the government's diktat. We are standing where we had been a few days back."
The BCB chief said the board would wait for the ICC's response before taking any further call. "I can't comment on what we will do if we aren't allowed to play in Sri Lanka unless the ICC sends its response," he added.
Bangladesh is scheduled to play three of its group matches in Kolkata and one in Mumbai. Bulbul also said he was unaware of reports suggesting Hyderabad and Chennai as possible replacement venues.
"I haven't heard about Hyderabad and Chennai being replacement venues. We might come to know maybe on Monday or Tuesday."
Expressing confidence in the national side, Bulbul said Bangladesh has the pedigree to perform well, particularly in sub-continental conditions. "I believe Bangladesh is a big team in world cricket. We have played the quarterfinals of the 2015 ODI World Cup, we played the Champions Trophy semifinals, and in sub-continental conditions we have a good chance of doing well," he said.
Addressing the recent controversy involving former skipper Tamim Iqbal, Bulbul said a BCB director publicly calling the senior cricketer a "traitor" was an expression of personal opinion and that he had sought an explanation from the concerned official.
"It was the personal opinion of the director, and I have asked him to give clarification. Tamim has achieved so much, and he should have kept that in mind while putting his opinion in public," Bulbul said.
Reflecting on his tenure, Bulbul said the phase had been educative for the board.
"It's a learning experience for 25 board directors. It's a mix of ups and downs. But the country comes first," he added.

India Asks Citizens To Avoid Going To Venezuela Hours After US Captures Maduro

"Act Of Armed Aggression": Russia Condemns US Attack On Venezuela
Russia condemned the US military action in Venezuela on Saturday and demanded "immediate" clarification about what happened to Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, who US President Donald Trump said was captured by US forces.
Venezuela is Russia's most important ally in South America, though the Kremlin has stopped short of offering assistance to Caracas in the event of a conflict with the US.
Early Saturday, "the United States committed an act of armed aggression against Venezuela. This is deeply concerning and condemnable," the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement.
"The pretexts used to justify such actions are untenable. Ideological hostility has triumphed over businesslike pragmatism," it added.
In a later statement, the ministry said it was "extremely alarmed by reports that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife were forcibly removed from the country as a result of today's US aggression".
"We call for an immediate clarification of the situation," it added.
Russia reaffirmed its support for Maduro last month and was one of only several countries to congratulate the embattled Venezuelan leader following his disputed re-election in 2024.

Australia's 87-Test Veteran To Retire After 5th Ashes Test: Clarke
Australian batter Usman Khawaja completed 8,000 international runs during the fourth Ashes Test. The 39-year-old veteran has not been having a memorable Ashes so far. His scores read 2, 82, 40, 29, and 0. Former Australian cricket team captain Michael Clarke has urged the veteran batter to retire before the fifth Ashes Test, saying Khawaja has the perfect chance to walk away with his head held high. "I think this will be Usman's farewell Test match. I don't think it's a token selection; they obviously picked him for Melbourne, so if they've gone that way, you pick him for Sydney as well," Clarke told Code Sports.
"But I think he'll retire after this Test match. Australia will win the series. Hopefully, he goes out with a big score. I'd love to see Uz make a hundred at the SCG and walk away on a high because not many people get that opportunity."
Meanwhile, former Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden blasted Australia's top order, calling their scorecard "unacceptable" and criticising Marnus Labuschagne, Usman Khawaja, and Cameron Green for struggling with basic techniques. Hayden's comments came after Australia lost to England in the fourth Ashes Test. The match ended in just two days, with Australia bowled out for 152 and 132 in both innings.
No Australian batter reached 50 in the match. Seamer Michael Neser top-scored for Australia in the first innings, while Travis Head managed the most runs in the second innings.
"That's an unacceptable scorecard. I don't care if it was 50 millimetres of grass. You need to be better than that. Head, Weatherald, Labuschagne, Khawaja, Carey, Green - they're all at sea with their basic techniques. The only technical thing I see is coming from our bowlers, who look more technically sound than our batters. Why is that?" Matthew Hayden said on the All Over Bar The Cricket podcast, as quoted by the Sydney Morning Herald.
