Students Told To Give 'No Torn Jeans' Undertaking By Kolkata College

Kolkata-based AJC Bose College students described their principal's instruction to sign an affidavit with the declaration that they will not wear torn or artificially torn jeans to college as a diktat interfering with their freedom of expression.

Students said they were "upset" with the college authorities and that such a move was unwarranted.

"We are upset with the principal's order. This is a diktat and interferes with our freedom to dress," Ajay Sinhotra, a student of the college, said.

Another student Rimmi Jamal said, "People should be allowed to wear ripped jeans. I protest against such an order." Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose College principal Purna Chandra Maity said students "must wear normal civil dresses" and he would allow any indecent outfit.

The affidavit that students were asked to sign said, "Having been admitted to Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose College, I will never enter inside college premises wearing torn/artificially torn jeans or any kind of indecent dress. I do hereby affirm that I shall wear normal civil dresses during my study period inside the entire college premises." Incidentally, last year a similar advisory was issued for students and staff of the same college asking them not to wear torn or distressed jeans.

The principal said the move to sign the affidavit was "to enforce strict discipline in the institute".

"No Match For Mahi Bhai But...": India Star On What Makes Kohli 'The Best'

MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli have been often compared for their captaincy, despite having different leadership styles. While Dhoni transformed white-ball cricket in India, leading the team to multiple ICC tournaments, Kohli's India ruled Test cricket for a period of three-four years, including multiple series wins in Australia. However, veteran pacer Ishant Sharma, who played majority of his cricket under Dhoni's leadership, labelled Kohli as "the best". While speaking on JioCinema's 'Home of Heroes' show, Ishant said that Dhoni groomed the fast bowlers before handing them over to Kohli, who took them to their prime.

"He (Kohli) was the best. When Virat was captain, bowling was complete. When we were playing under Mahi bhai, we were in a transition phase. At that time, Shami and Umesh were new, and only I was there. Everyone else would rotate. Bhuvi was also new. There is no match for Mahi bhai as a communicator. But what he did was groom the bowlers and leave them with Virat. Shami and Umesh, over time, became different bowlers and then Jasprit came in. So, he got a complete package. The best thing he did was identify everyone's traits, that he used to talk about one thing with one person and then Iet them be," said Ishant.

The 34-year-old added that Kohli's aggressive approach, coupled with his ability to identify roles of each player, made him special.

"First thing, he was aggressive. If you're bowling with the new ball, you can concede 25 runs in five overs as long as you take two wickets. The important thing was that he gave everyone defined roles. After 2021, I realized he wanted all of us to think out of the box," the veteran pacer added.

For the record, Kohli (63.38) has a much higher win percentage than Dhoni (53.61) as captain of India. Only Rohit Sharma has a better win percentage than Kohli, but the former has played far less games as captain.

From working as a ticket collector at a railway station, Dhoni transformed into India's biggest trophy collector, leading the team to ICC T20 World Cup 2007, ICC ODI World Cup 2011 and ICC Champions Trophy 2013 as skipper. MS Dhoni is undoubtedly one of the greatest captains cricket ever witnessed.

The wicketkeeper-batter has a massive fan following but what is not a good thing for the fans is the fact that Dhoni is not active on social media. He barely posts anything on the platform and that sees his fans rely on viral videos and pictures to get a glimpse of the player.

32 Firms Apply To Make Laptops In India: Union Minister

The government has received 32 applications for production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme 2.0 for IT hardware, of which 25 are domestic companies, IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told reporters in Delhi on Wednesday.

The announcement comes days after the government announced restrictions in laptop imports from November.

All of them are driven to gear up manufacturing and bring in supply chains.

Mr Vaishnaw said companies like HP, Dell, Lenovo, Thompson, Acer, and Asus will be manufacturing laptops under the scheme. HP, VVDN, Lenovo will be manufacturing servers.

He said Apple has not applied under the PLI framework, but the company is already manufacturing components.

This move should see a significant reduction in the import of laptops and PCs, Vaishnaw said, adding that "import restrictions are not a worry anymore."

"I spoke to all the applicants, and they didn't raise any concern," he said.

The minister said incremental production expected is around Rs 3.35 lakh crore and the expected direct employment is around 75,000.

"The upcoming Dixon factory in Noida will alone employ 25,000 people," he said.

Manufacturing of laptops will begin by April 2024, officials said, as companies such as Dell are also migrating to PLI scheme.

When asked if India is optimising on big players quitting China with its economy slowing down, Mr Vaishnaw said India is emerging as a trusted value chain partner.

"Many of these companies will use the semiconductors manufactured in India. In fact, they were pleased we are starting with the manufacturing of memory first, which is crucial for laptops. Companies have shared their detailed proposals. We are optimistic more will join," he said.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam on Wednesday said the massive 238-run win over Nepal in the Asia Cup opener will give his side confidence ahead of their blockbuster clash against arch-rivals India on Saturday. Pakistan crushed minnows Nepal by a huge margin of 238 runs here in a Group A match to make a winning start to the Asia Cup. Pakistan will now travel to Sri Lanka for the much-anticipated match against India to be played in Pallekele.

"This game was good preparation for the India game because it gave us confidence. We want to give 100 per cent every match, hope to do that there as well," Babar said after the end of the match. Babar smashed 151, his 19th ODI century while Iftikhar Ahmed (109 not out) hit his maiden ODI ton to power Pakistan to an imposing 342 for six after opting to bat.

Babar was involved in two crucial partnerships after a sedate start -- first stitching 86 runs with Mohammad Rizwan (44 off 50) and then sharing an whirlwind 214 runs for the fifth wicket with Iftikhar. In reply, Nepal were bowled out for just 104 in 23.4 overs with Shadab Khan taking four wickets and Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf claiming two each.

"When I went in, I played a couple of balls. The ball wasn't coming on, pitch was two-paced. (Mohammad) Rizwan and I built the partnership and see what happened. Sometimes, Rizwan gave me confidence and vice-versa," he said.

"When Iftikhar came, the tempo changed. He played well too. After two-three fours, he was comfortable, he smacked it after 40 overs.

"I'm satisfied. A couple of overs we were not up to the mark. Pacers did well, spinners struck too," Babar added.

2 IndiGo Flights Report Mid-Air Engine Shutdowns, Land Safely

A Kolkata-Bengaluru IndiGo flight reported a mid-air glitch on Tuesday after one of its engines shut down. The flight, however, landed safely.

The incident happened within hours of the carrier's other aircraft suffered a similar failure.

The first engine glitch incident happened on Indigo's Madurai-Mumbai flight earlier in the day.

"Engine 2 stall occurred and Engine 2 oil chip detected warning came. Engine 2 was shut down as per the checklist and the aircraft landed safely," the country's aviation regulator, the DGCA, said in a statement.

IndiGo also released a statement, citing a technical issue before landing in Mumbai.

"The pilot prioritized the landing in Mumbai. The aircraft is held in Mumbai and will be back in operation after necessary maintenance. We regret the inconvenience caused to the passengers," IndiGo said.

Both these aircraft were running on Pratt and Whitney engines, officials said.

Gujarat Man Poses As Scientist Who Designed Chandrayaan-3 Lander, Arrested

The police in Gujarat's Surat city on Tuesday arrested a man who allegedly posed as a scientist with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and gave interviews to local media outlets claiming that he designed the lander module for the Chandrayaan-3 moon mission, an official said.

A complaint was lodged against the accused, Mitul Trivedi, after he was seen giving interviews after the Vikram lander successfully made a soft-landing on August 23, claiming to have designed the lander module of Chandrayaan-3, the official said.

Trivedi allegedly posed as the "assistant chairman" of ISRO's "Ancient Science Application department" and even produced a fake appointment letter dated February 26, 2022, he said.

"A thorough investigation revealed that the man was in no way connected to ISRO's Chandrayaan-3 mission and had made false claims of being an ISRO employee," the police said in a statement.

He even produced a fake letter about being the "space research member" for ISRO's next project called "mercury force in space", it said.

He spread fake messages regarding ISRO despite not having contributed to the ambitious project, thereby harming the reputation of the institution, the statement read.

The Surat city crime branch lodged an FIR against the accused under sections 419 (cheating by impersonation), 465 (forgery), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), and 471 (using forged document as genuine) of the Indian Penal Code.

"I Felt Attacked": Mahira On Battling Depression After Backlash Over Raees

Pakistani actress Mahira Khan, in a recent interview, opened up about her mental health struggle and being diagnosed with manic depression. Talking to FWhy Podcast, the Raees actor said that her mental health aggravated after stepping into Bollywood with the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Raees, and the 2017 incident, where pictures of her smoking with actor Ranbir Kapoor went viral. Mahira Khan made her Bollywood debut with Raees alongside Shah Rukh Khan in 2017, the same year the smoking pictures with Ranbir Kapoor went viral. Reflecting on the backlash she faced, Mahira said, "That (backlash) brought out the anxiety and depression hidden inside me. That was a hard time for me. I felt attacked. The constant backlash… You are getting mean tweets, and comments on their channels (Indian channels). That was a time my faith broke and I developed severe anxiety to the point that one day I had a panic attack and fainted. That was the first time I went to therapy. But that didn't work out, as I went to several therapists... that year was rough... I couldn't sleep, my hands used to shake."

Mahira also discussed about the 2016 Uri attack, after which Pakistani actors were banned from working in Bollywood.

Mahira said, "I had finished the film (Raees) and everything was going fine and then suddenly this attack (Uri attack) happens. Politically everything gets messed up. With India, it is always political. But the fact that it could get this messy! I was not scared, but I was threatened. Constant tweets I would get calls, and very scary ones. The only thing I wanted was that 'Okay fine I can't go to India to promote it (Raees), but I hope it releases in my country because I knew people would rush to watch it as he (Shah Rukh Khan) is loved here (in Pakistan)."

On the work front, Pakistani heartthrobs Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan, Sanam Saeed are set to headline Netflix's first Pakistan-themed original. The series is an official adaptation of Farhat Ishtiaq's bestselling 2013 Urdu-language novel of the same name. The story revolves around Sikandar, a Harvard law student, who keeps himself aloof after an incident takes a toll on his life. Sikandar meets Liza, an artist with a troubled past, in Italy.

ISRO Sets Date For Its Solar Mission 'Aditya-L1': What Are Its Objectives

After successfully landing a spacecraft near the south pole of the Moon, India's next cosmic quest - the Sun. ISRO has announced that its first solar mission, Aditya-L1, will be launched on September 2 at 11:50 am from the Sriharikota space centre.

According to ISRO, Aditya-L1 will observe the solar corona from a remote location at the Sun-Earth Lagrange point L1, which is about 1.5 million kilometres from Earth.

Named after Joseph-Louis Lagrange, a French mathematician who first studied them in the 18th century, Lagrange Points are points in space where the gravitational forces of two large bodies, such as the Sun and the Earth, balance out, creating a region of equilibrium that can be used by a spacecraft to reduce fuel consumption.

"A satellite placed in the halo orbit around the L1 point has the major advantage of continuously viewing the Sun without any occultation/eclipses. This will provide a greater advantage of observing solar activities and their effect on space weather in real-time," says ISRO. 

India's first space-based observatory to study the Sun, the Aditya-L1 spacecraft, will be launched using the PSLV-C57 rocket.

Main Objectives

According to ISRO, The Aditya-L1 mission is designed to study the Sun's upper atmosphere (chromosphere and corona) and its interaction with the solar wind. The mission is aimed at studying the physics of the partially ionized plasma in the solar atmosphere.

The spacecraft will investigate the mechanisms that heat the solar corona and observe the initiation and development of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and solar flares.

It will study the in-situ particle and plasma environment in the vicinity of the Sun and characterise the magnetic field in the solar corona.

It will also study and evaluate the main drivers of space weather.

Its Payloads

The Aditya-L1 spacecraft will be equipped with seven payloads to study the Sun's corona, chromosphere, photosphere, and solar wind.

"The suits of Aditya L1 payloads are expected to provide the most crucial information to understand the problem of coronal heating, coronal mass ejection, pre-flare and flare activities and their characteristics, dynamics of space weather, propagation of particle and fields, etc.," says ISRO.

The four remote sensing payloads will image the Sun's atmosphere in different wavelengths of light, including visible, ultraviolet, and X-rays.

• The Visible Emission Line Coronagraph (VELC) will image the solar corona and study its dynamics.
• The Solar Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (SUIT) will image the photosphere and chromosphere in both narrow and broadband ultraviolet wavelengths.
• The Solar Low Energy X-ray Spectrometer (SoLEXS) will study the soft X-ray emission from the Sun.
• The High Energy L1 Orbiting X-ray Spectrometer (HEL1OS) will study the hard X-ray emission from the Sun.

The three in-situ payloads will measure the composition, dynamics, and magnetic field of the solar wind.

• The Aditya Solar Wind Particle Experiment (ASPEX) will measure the composition and dynamics of the solar wind.
• The Plasma Analyser Package For Aditya (PAPA) will measure the plasma properties of the solar wind.
• The Advanced Tri-axial High-Resolution Digital Magnetometers will measure the magnetic field in the solar wind.

Delhi Police is known for using entertaining and witty ways to educate the masses on various topics. The city's police department often uses quick wit to send out a clear message. Taking to Twitter on Monday, the police department shared a uniquely drafted special traffic advisory using a Neeraj Chopra analogy.

"Pls drive a campaign to stop high beam lights. At night almost every car driver uses a high beam only the same trend is followed by auto rickshaws and buses," the third user requested.

Meanwhile, India's Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra scripted history yet again. The star javelin thrower became the first player from the nation to clinch a gold medal in the World Athletics Championships on Sunday. It was a throw of 88.17m in his second attempt in the final in Budapest, Hungary that helped Neeraj bag the honour.

On winning a gold medal at the prestigious event, Neeraj received a cash prize of $70000, which is close to 58 lakh rupees.

After Lucy Letby, Another UK Nurse Under Investigation For Baby's Death

An investigation by the UK's healthcare agency NHS has linked the arrest of a nurse to death of three babies under suspicious circumstances at the hospital where she worked. According to The Telegraph, the nurse used to work at Birmingham Children's Hospital but her identity has not been released. The 28-year-old was arrested on suspicion of administering poison with intent to endanger life. This comes shortly after the conviction of another nurse named Lucy Letby on charges of murdering seven babies.

Though the probe was launched last year, after the baby's death, the nurse remained under investigation this weekend. She has not yet been taken back by the hospital, and the regulator too has suspended her, which means she cannot work as a nurse elsewhere.

All the families of the children involved in the review in Birmingham have been informed, said The Telegraph.

"In May 2022, a child on the paediatric intensive care unit at Birmingham Children's Hospital deteriorated suddenly and unexpectedly. Due to the circumstances of the deterioration, the trust acted straight away," Dr Fiona Reynolds, NHS trust's chief medical officer, said in a statement.

"A member of staff was suspended from work and subsequently arrested at home. Sadly, the child later died and our thoughts remain with the family," she added.

According to Metro, the NHS trust passed the findings to the police.

Meanwhile, Lucy Letby was accused of harming 17 babies, some of them just days old, between June 2015 and June 2016.

In the majority of cases she is believed to have injected them with air but prosecutors also accused her of introducing insulin or too much milk.

Speaking to News18 Showsha, she said, “Gadar 2 is a massive success because people love Sunny a lot. They all wanted him. I used to also tell him that you have to do the best one now. Karna padega! He would say main karunga,” adding, “He was very sweet you know and he did this picture and I am deeply so thrilled about it and that he has got so much appreciation, very nice. Each and every scene was so good.”

Jammu Teacher Thrashed Student For Religious Slogan In Class, Arrested

A teacher of a government school has been arrested for thrashing a class 10 student for writing a religious slogan on a classroom board in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir, an official said on Saturday.

According to police, the principal of the Government Higher Secondary School (Bani) is also accused of physically assaulting the teenager and is absconding. They said the victim student is undergoing treatment at a hospital.

Deputy Commissioner, Kathua, Rakesh Minhas has constituted a three-member committee to probe the incident which sparked protests by students and parents on Saturday.

On August 25, police said a complaint was made by Kuldeep Singh alleging that his son was beaten up by teacher Farooq Ahmad and school principal Mohd Hafiz.

A case was registered at Police Station Bani under relevant sections of the Juvenile Justice Act and a team headed by the local SHO visited the school premises and arrested the teacher, they said.

"The principal is absconding and a search is going on to arrest him, while further investigation is underway," a senior police officer said.

The committee constituted by the deputy commissioner will have Sub Divisional Magistrate Bani, Deputy Chief Education Officer Kathua and Principal Government Higher Secondary School Kharote, as its members.

“…the committee members are directed to inquire into the matter and submit the fact finding report along with specific comments and recommendations to this office within two days positively in order to proceed further in the matter. Moreover, the committee is also directed to fix the responsibility against the culprit regarding the incident,” Minhas said in an order.

The protesters alleged that the student was thrashed by the teacher and the principal for writing a religious slogan on the classroom board.

Hotel Owner Claims "Super Friendly" Guests Stole Everything In Room

A hotel owner in Wales was left stunned after a couple of her guests stole everything from their room, including electric appliances, before checking out. According to the BBC, the owner of the Dolphin Hotel in Pembroke Dock accused two of her guests of stealing 200 pounds of items after checking in their stay on Saturday. 

The 43-year-old landlady, Natalie Newton, said that the couple seemed "super friendly" while checking in, but she was still suspicious because they did not have any luggage with them. 

Ms Newton claimed that all in all, the guests made off the kettle, an electric fan, luxury towels, two lamps, the tea and coffee container, a charging tower and other stuff, the BBC reported. 

"This will cost at least 200 pounds to replace everything but it also meant I couldn't rent the room out again until it was all replenished," the 43-year-old said, as per Metro. 

She further stated that crime could not have come at a worse time for the business which has been in her family since 1999. "We're trying to run a boutique hotel and restaurant but first we had Covid and now we have the cost of living crisis - I don't know how much longer we can keep going," she said.

"I tried contacting the couple. I have phoned the number they left, I have messaged them but they haven't come back. I even tried charging their card but the payment was declined," Ms Newton claimed, as per the outlet.

According to the landlady, the only things the guests didn't take were the shampoo and soaps from the bathroom. She also said that the room was unusable for a number of days while everything was replaced. She said that the couple had south Wales accents and their card was declined. 

Ms Newton has now put out an appeal to identify the miscreants who used Booking.com to reserve the room. She is hoping the CCTV footage she provided to the cops will help identify the duo.

The Dyfed-Powys Police, on the other hand, said inquiries were ongoing into the incident.

7 Injured In Mass Shooting At Caribbean Festival In Boston: Police

At least seven people were hospitalized after a mass shooting at a Caribbean festival in Boston early Saturday, the police said.

None of the seven had life-threatening injuries, they added.

"Firearms have been recovered and arrests made," the police from the northeastern city said in a brief statement.

An earlier advisory from Boston police warned that traffic would be impacted by a pair of parades Saturday linked to an annual Caribbean carnival, with one beginning at 6:30 am (1030 GMT) and a second hours later.

Police said they received a first call about shots being fired at 7:44 am.

Unverified social media posts appeared to show people running from a chaotic street scene, with some falling to the ground.

One person died during last year's Caribbean festival, local media reported.

Mass shootings have become disturbingly common across the United States, with easy access to firearms in most states.

On Friday night, two women were wounded by gunfire in Chicago while at a major league baseball game between the White Sox and the visiting Oakland Athletics.

"2 Separate Sex Assault Cases In Hotel Can't Be Coincidence": Women's Body

The Delhi Commission for Women on Saturday issued notice to Delhi Police over two separate incidents of sexual assault involving two minor girls in the same hotel in Delhi and sought details of action taken against the hotel, an official statement said.

According to the release, the Commission recently received cases of sexual assault with two minor girls at a hotel in Delhi.

The Commission said that it has been informed that two persons, in two separate incidents, allegedly assaulted two 15-year-old girls sexually multiple times in a hotel in Delhi.

DCW Chairperson Swati Maliwal stated, “We have received two separate cases of sexual assault with minors in a hotel. It cannot be a coincidence, action should be taken against the owner/manager of the hotel. In the past as well, cases of sexual assault with minors have occurred in Delhi. We are investigating as to what guidelines have been issued by Delhi Police regarding booking/stay by minors in hotels and for ensuring their safety.”

In both these cases FIRs have been registered at Jagatpuri police station. In the past as well, several cases have been reported wherein many minor girls were allegedly sexually assaulted by accused persons in hotels.

In this regard, DCW Chairperson Swati Maliwal has issued notice to Delhi Police seeking action taken report on the matter.

The Commission has sought the details of action taken against the hotel. It also asked whether the manager/owner of the hotel had been arrested or not and sought the details of the association of any aggregator with the hotel.

DCW has also sought details of FIRs wherein women and minor girls have been sexually assaulted in hotels and the present status of the cases and has asked for action taken by Delhi Police against hotels, where cases of sexual assault with minors have been reported.

As per the official statement, the Commission has sought the details of any rules/guidelines issued by Delhi Police with respect to booking/staying by minors in hotels. It has also sought details of steps taken by Delhi Police to ensure the safety of women and minor girls in hotels/guest houses.

On India's Asia Cup Squad, Ex-Pakistan Star Points Out "Unfair" Selection

The Asia Cup 2023 is all set to kick off on August 30. India have already annouced the squad for the continental event. The 17-member team, excluding reserve Sanju Samson, picked by the selection committee was much-awaited as more or less this squad will only feature in the ODI World Cup 2023 that is set to take place in October-November in India. The selection of young batter Tilak Varma, who recently made his India debut and the axing of spinner Yuzvendra Chahal were the highlights of the squad picked by the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria has however pointed out what he believes was an "unfair" selection. He said that Samson should have been picked in the main squad and KL Rahul, who has made it to the team, should have been the reserve instead.

"KL Rahul didn't perform well in Test cricket, which led to him losing his place. He then failed to score in the IPL as well. He was injured and got an entry into the team once again when he recovered. This is unfair. If you (India) have given KL Rahul a chance, Sanju Samson should also have been in the squad. Rahul should have been a reserve player. However, maybe he has become such a big name that you can't drop him," Kaneria said on his YouTube channel.

"Sanju Samson has only been picked to carry drinks. While many would say he has been treated unfairly, I disagree with that. He was given enough chances, which he needed to grab with both hands. You have to perform if you want to be retained in the team," he added.
