"Sample Not Taken From Us": Family Of Child Who Died After Eating Cake

The family of a 10-year-old girl who died after eating a cake ordered online in Punjab has alleged the health department did not help them at all. The first information report (FIR) was also filed five days after she died, her family said.

The girl had celebrated her birthday on March 24, and died hours later after the family had gone to bed. She had also vomited the cake before and struggled to breathe before she died, her family has said. Others in the family who ate the cake had also fallen sick.

The incident was picked up by local media, and it came to national attention only on Saturday.

Her grandfather, Harbhanj Lal, told NDTV the lack of alertness on the part of the health department was disturbing.

"The health department officer refused to take the sample of the cake that we had ordered. The officer insisted they will take samples only from the shop where the cake was baked," Mr Lal told NDTV.

The family said the name of the bakery in the bill and the actual shop were different, indicating it could have been a fly-by-night cloud kitchen, a concept that is gaining currency due to its flexible, lightweight nature of operations.

Independent kitchens would make foods in usually one-room setups to take online delivery orders, and package the foods well as from a big place.

"We are also monitoring this concept of cloud kitchen because the name of the bakery kept changing in Zomato," Patiala Superintendent of Police Sarfaraz Alam said.

A health officer said the girl's family visited him on Thursday. "I told them to file a formal complaint with the police and with the health department. Food teams were instructed to visit the house and collect samples of the cake," the officer said, news agency PTI reported.

In visuals of the birthday celebrations, the girl, Manvi, was seen cutting the cake and celebrating with her family, just hours before her death.

The family has alleged that the chocolate cake, ordered from 'Cake Kanha', contained some poisonous substance.

Who Is Mayank Yadav - Young LSG Pacer With Fastest Ball Of IPL 2024

Young fast bowler Mayank Yadav impressed on his IPL 2024 debut for Lucknow Super Giants as he bowled the fastest delivery of this year's competition. Mayank looked in good rhythm and during the 12th over of the Punjab Kings innings, he produced a 155.8 kmph delivery that left Shikhar Dhawan in a spot of bother. The 21-year-old was bought in the auction in 2022 by LSG for the base price of Rs 20 lakh but was then replaced by Arpit Guleria due to an injury. During his T20 career, he has taken 12 wickets in 10 matches while in his List A career, Mayank has taken 34 wickets in 17 matches.

Mayank represents Delhi in the domestic circuit and although he took two important wickets in the semi-finals of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2023-2024, his team was defeated by Punjab.

Earlier, Krunal Pandya's late blitz powered Lucknow Super Giants to a competitive 199/8 in their Indian Premier League match against Punjab Kings.

Asked to bat first, opener Quinton de Kock top-scored for LSG with a 38-ball 54 but it was stand-in skipper Nicholas Pooran's 21-ball 42, which infused life into his team's innings in the middle overs.

On the back of two sixes and four boundaries, Krunal then scored at a strike rate of 200 to finish on a 22-ball 43 and give his side extra cushion.

De Kock got the LSG innings underway with a splendid drive through mid-off for a boundary.

Playing the game as 'impact player' having handed over the leadership responsibility to Nicholas Pooran, KL Rahul didn't look convincing as he tried to flick Kagiso Rabada behind square on the leg-side. Running in from a long way, a diving Harshal Patel made a valiant attempt to latch on to the ball but Rahul was lucky as the fielder could not pull off what would have been a blinder.

At the other end, De Kock was in his elements as he flayed Rabada over point for a four in the first delivery he faced from the South African speedster.

Next ball de Kock did one better, as he opened the face of the bat to whack Rabada over the backward point boundary for a six.

Rahul drove Arshdeep Singh down the ground for a maximum, and then, smashed another delivery in a similar fashion, but that fetched him a four.

Arshdeep, however, exacted his revenged when the left-arm seamer had the LSG batter caught by Jonny Bairstow at backward point for a nine-ball 15.

Devdutt Padikkal got himself two boundaries before being dismissed by Sam Curran.

Marcus Stoinis (19) hit two sixes before being bowled by Rahul Chahar as he looked to hoick the spinner on the on-side.

That brought Pooran into the middle and the West Indian quickly got into the groove, hitting Chahar for two sixes and a four for a 20-run over, which gave LSG's run rate a much-needed impetus.

Meanwhile, De Kock brought up his half century in 34 balls but a strategic timeout broke LSG's momentum as the left-handed South African batter top-edged a short Arshdeep delivery for wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma to complete an easy catch.

Pooran kept the scoreboard moving at a good rate until he dragged a Rabada delivery onto the stumps, a big blow for LSG at a crucial juncture.

New man Krunal Pandya did not waste any time to settle down, brilliantly dispatching a short Rabada delivery over midwicket for a maximum. Curran bowled a tight 17th over to halt LSG's charge, but Krunal got a flurry of boundaries to prop up LSG.

UK Woman, 24, Left "Gasping For Air" After Getting Lip Filler Dissolved

A 24-year-old woman in the United Kingdom was left unrecognisable after a severe reaction to a lip filler dissolver. According to Metro, the woman, identified as Shaunna Harris, thought she was going to die after her throat closed up when given a shot of lip dissolver by her aesthetician. She was left "gasping for air" while her face ballooned to double its size minutes after being given the shot in January.

The 24-year-old had lip filler injected twice before to plump up her pout. She got her first 0.5ml of lip filler when she was 18, and an additional 1ml at 22. Earlier this year, she decided to dissolve her existing filler before topping up with another 1ml. However, the 24-year-old experienced a severe allergic reaction moments after the dissolver was injected.

"I went to have my lip filler dissolved and I didn't think anything of it because I'd had lip filler put in in the past and it was all fine," Ms Harris said, as per Metro

Ms Harris revealed that the complications began when the 1ml she wanted to dissolve had "migrated". "Straight away I knew something wasn't right. She gave me the dissolver and my lips just blew up," she said. "I asked the aesthetician if it was normal and she said 'yeah people's lips do tend to swell up' but it didn't look normal," she recalled.

The 24-year-old further said that she started to get itchy and painful hives all over her eyelids in the next five minutes. "Then within 10 minutes, my face was all blown up and swollen. I couldn't see out of my eyes," she said, adding, "I looked unrecognisable".

Ms Harris said that she was "struggling to breathe" and thought she was going to die. "My body was covered in hives. I felt like my skin was burning," she recalled.

"When they gave me the adrenaline, it opened up my airways and my breathing improved. But my face was swollen for days after. I was really worried my face wouldn't go down. I didn't go out of the house for three days," Ms Harris said.

According to doctors, Ms Harris' reaction to getting lip filler dissolved was due to an allergic reaction to hyaluronidase - a soluble protein enzyme which is often used by aestheticians to break down the hyaluronic acid found in lip filler.

Woman Says Air India Gave Away Mother's Business Class Seat, Airline Reacts

A woman took to X to slam Air India after the airline allegedly gave her mother's Business class seat to another passenger on a flight from Delhi to Washington DC. The user, Vitasta, called the airline's behaviour "absolutely ridiculous" and criticised Air India for showing "no regard for customers.''

In a tweet, she recounted the frustrating experience saying how her mother was initially told that her business class seat did not recline. She was then told that the seat was reserved for the crew, but later another passenger was seen sitting there. Meanwhile, her mother was moved to economy class with a fixed armrest which was ''uncomfortable and unacceptable'' to her.

''@airindia how dare you give my mom's business class seat to someone else on a long haul flight from Delhi to Washington DC? First telling her the seat doesn't recline, then saying the seat is for the crew and then she finds someone else sitting there as she is sent to the economy?'', Ms Vitasta wrote on X.

''Absolutely ridiculous behaviour and no regard for your customers! We will be complaining about this. Air India, do better!'' she added.

Here's the post:

The airline later reached out to her and assured her that they were investigating the matter on priority with the airport team. ''Dear Ma'am, please be rest assured that we're investigating the matter on priority with our airport team. We'll connect with you soon,'' they wrote.

Later, the user said that the airline offered to compensate 75% of the fare, and gave her an upgrade voucher.

''Here is the update: they've compensated 75% of the fare + an upgrade voucher (what a joke). The ground staff at Delhi was extremely rude and behaved disgustingly. My mother was listed in the flight manifest as a business class passenger, yet made to ride in economy,'' she wrote.

''The issue remains that a passenger was given my mother's seat. A business seat was indicated on mom's boarding pass. My mother who has health issues and paid a higher fare to travel in comfort was told by the Delhi ground staff that her luggage would be taken off the plane if she didn't simply take the economy seat,'' she added.

However, internet users were not convinced by the airline's compensatory actions and asked the user to file a complaint against them.

One user wrote, ''Please file a complaint with the Consumer Forum for deficiency of service.'' Another commented, ''Don't accept the 75%, she paid for a service and didn't receive it, she should get 100% minimum.'' A third said, ''@airindia's careless, arrogant culture would never change irrespective of who owns it. This behaviour wouldn't change no matter what.''

A fourth added, ''Compensating the fare is no solution. Your mom booked a business-class seat for comfy travel. Getting money back is not a solution. Air India can't get away by refunding. The whole point of booking a business class seat was for comfort. Refund of money is neither here nor there.''

A fifth wrote, ''Terrible. Wish she had refused to fly. They should better refund the entire fare for the mishap.''

"Questions For You": M Kharge Counters PM's "Browbeat and Bully" Comment

Congress's Mallikarjun Kharge issued a strong rebuttal this evening to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's comment that "To browbeat and bully others is vintage Congress culture". In a statement that started with a mild "it is not proper form for the PM to comment on our judiciary", the Congress chief went on to ask four pointed questions and accused the Prime Minister of being "personally responsible" for "usurping" the powers of institutions and "weakening our country".

What drew the Congress chief's rejoinder was a blistering post by PM Modi earlier today after 600 lawyers wrote to Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, alleging attempts by "a vested interest group" to undermine the judiciary's integrity and defame courts.

"To browbeat and bully others is vintage Congress culture. Five decades ago, they itself had called for a 'committed judiciary' - they shamelessly want commitment from others for their selfish interests, but desist from any commitment towards the nation," PM Modi said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

Later in the evening, the Congress chief, in his statement posted on X, "As you consider India's institutions to be your personal property, I have some questions for you".

The first question pertained to an unprecedented press conference in January 2018 by four judges of the Supreme Court, who went public with their complaints against the then Chief Justice of India, Dipak Misra. An independent judiciary is essential for a functioning democracy, the judges had said.

"Why was one of the judges nominated by your Govt to the Rajya Sabha?" he asked next, refering to the unprecedented Upper House nomination of former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi in 2020. The recommendation by then President of India Ram Nath Kovind is unprecedented โ€“ till then, no Chief Justice had been nominated to the Upper House by the head of the state.

"Why has your party fielded a former high court judge from West Bengal for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections?" Mr Kharge has also asked, referring to the former Calcutta High Court judge Abhijeet Gangopadhyay, whose move into electoral politics has raised eyebrows.

Mr Kharge also questioned why the government brought the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) that was struck down by the Supreme Court. The Congress, though, had supported the constitutional amendment bill in parliament.

The letter by over 600 lawyers, including veteran advocate Harish Salve and Bar Council chairperson Manan Kumar Mishra, alleged that the vested interest group is putting pressure on the judiciary, especially in cases of corruption involving political leaders.

The letter also targeted a section of lawyers without naming them and alleged they defend politicians by day and then try to influence judges through the media at night.

Refering to the letter, Union minister Kiren Rijiju posted on X that "sane voices" are coming out now. "These Congress people coined the concept of committed judiciary and suspended Indian Constitution. The Congress and leftists want courts and constitutional authorities to serve them or else they immediately start attacking the very institutions," his post read.

SRH's 277/3 Is Not The Highest In T20 Format - A Look At Top Team Totals

Records tumbled left-right and centre as Sunrisers Hyderabad smashed 277 for three, the highest total in IPL history, to leave Mumbai Indians shell shocked on Wednesday. Travis Head (62 off 24) and Abhishek Sharma (63 off 23) came up with a sensational display of power-hitting, that saw the latter snatching the franchise record for fastest fifty from the Australian within minutes. Heinrich Klaasen (80 not out off 34 balls) provided the fireworks in the end to help SRH break an 11-year-old record. The previous highest total in IPL was 263 for five achieved by Royal Challengers Bangalore back in 2013.

It was raining fours and sixes throughout the innings as Head and Sharma toyed with the Mumbai Indians attack.

Head, who was surprisingly left out of the playing eleven for the opening game, reinforced his status as one of the most dangerous batters in the game with a whirlwind effort.

He broke David Warner's record of the fastest fifty by a SRH batter with a 18-ball half-century before Sharma surpassed Head's feat 20 balls later by reaching the milestone in 16 balls.

Head, who was dropped by compatriot Tim David at the start of his innings, opened his front leg and hit boundaries at will, collecting nine fours and three sixes in total.

The southpaw completed his fifty with an inside out four wide of mid-off before dispatching a bouncer from Gerald Coetzee for a six over deep midwicket, prompting opposition skipper Hardik Pandya to acknowledge the Australian's brutal assault.

When Head departed, Sharma went hammer and tongs, mostly targeting the cow corner region for his seven sixes and three boundaries.

It was a nightmarish start to the IPL for the 17-year-old South Africa pacer Kwena Maphaka, who made the Mumbai Indians squad at the back of his exploits in the U-19 World Cup.

He leaked as many as 66 runs in his four overs. The left-arm pacer could not recover from Head's onslaught in his second over in which he conceded 22 runs.

With the majority of the Mumbai bowlers taken to the cleaners, it was surprising that Mumbai Indians skipper Pandya waited till the 13th over to give Jasprit Bumrah his second over.

Following Sharma's dismissal, the in-form Klaasen ensured there was no stopping to the SRH's six hitting spree. Klaasen ended up with seven sixes with the maximum off a Bumrah bouncer standing out.

Klaasen had almost taken SRH over the line with his breathtaking knock against KKR at the Eden Gardens.

Former skipper Aiden Markram chipped in 42 off 28 balls.

However, SunRisers Hyderabad's 277/3 is not the highest score in the shortest format.

Highest team totals in the format (T20I and T20 combined)
1. Nepal 314/3 vs Mongolia, 2023
2. Afghanistan 278/3 vs Ireland, 2019
3. Czech Rep. 278/4 vs Turkey, 2019
4. SunRisers Hyderabad 277/3 vs Mumbai Indians, 2024
5. Punjab 275/6 vs Andhra, 2023

Rs 33,000 Not Enough, 3 In Noida Fined Another Rs 47,500 For Viral Holi Act

The Noida Traffic Police slapped another penalty of Rs 47,500 against three people, including two women, whose video of scooter-riding surfaced on social media this week, officials said on Wednesday.

The local police have lodged an FIR in this regard.

The traffic police had earlier imposed a fine of Rs 33,000 on the scooter-owner after their first video, which was called out for vulgarity in public places by internet users, surfaced on social media on March 25.

The traffic police then took cognizance of another video, in which one girl and a boy were seen riding the scooter on a city street without helmets, and booked the scooter-owner on seven counts of negligence related to road safety including provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, according to the e-challan.

"The total penalty imposed on the scooter owner over the two episodes in the two days has reached Rs 80,500," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Anil Kumar Yadav told PTI.

Yadav also appealed to the public to obey traffic rules and follow road safety guidelines like wearing helmets and seat belts while riding two-wheelers or four wheelers, respectively.

Meanwhile, an FIR was also lodged on Tuesday at Noida's Sector 113 police station against the three "unidentified" persons on the basis of a complaint lodged by a local sub-inspector.

"The boy was negligently riding the scooter while the girls engaged in obscene acts to make its video, which was later circulated on social media and due to which anger is being expressed by the general public," the allegation against the trio in the FIR stated.

The FIR has been lodged under IPC sections 279 (rash/negligent driving endangering human life), 290 (public nuisance), 294 (obscenity in public place), 336 and 337 (both related to act endangering life of others or causing hurt by it).

Police said further legal proceedings in the case are underway.

Ship That Hit US Baltimore Bridge Also Involved In 2016 Belgium Accident

The ship that caused the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore early on Tuesday was also involved in an accident in the port of Antwerp, Belgium, in 2016.

The Antwerp port authorities said the container ship Dali hit a quay on July 11, 2016, as it tried to exit the North Sea container terminal.

The port authority could give no details about the cause of the accident, but said the ship had remained at the dock for repairs for some time after the incident.

"As a general rule, these accidents are investigated and ships are only allowed to leave after experts have determined it is safe for them to do so," a spokesperson for the Antwerp port told Reuters.

The Belgian nautical committee, which investigates such incidents, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The 948-foot MS Dali, owned by Grace Ocean Pte Ltd and managed by Synergy Marine Corp, on Tuesday collided with one of the pillars of the Baltimore bridge.

It was chartered by shipping company Maersk at the time of the incident in Baltimore, the Danish company said in a statement.

Maersk said it could not comment on the incident in Antwerp.

"Will Take Strict Action": PM Modi To Kerala BJP Candidate On Bank Scam

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to the BJP candidate in Kerala's Alathur Lok Sabha constituency, Prof T N Sarasu, on Tuesday and assured her that strict action would be taken against those involved in the alleged irregularities in the cooperative banks in the southern state.

Party leaders said PM Modi, who called Professor Sarasu, inquired about her campaign progress in the Alathur seat.

The seat is reserved for the Scheduled Castes, and the candidature of Sarasu, a retired college principal, was announced on Sunday.

During her conversation with the prime minister over the phone, Mr Sarasu raised the issue of irregularities reported from certain cooperative banks in Kerala and sought his intervention to punish the guilty.

Responding to this, PM Modi said, "I am happy that, as the candidate, you are taking the issue of the people and common man's problems. It is a good thing for any public servant. I am happy to hear that you are raising the issue."

He said he had heard about it and had some details about it, agreeing with the candidate that "a lot of poor people have been affected." "Our government will take strict action against everyone involved and we will ensure that the poor get justice. One more thing Sarasu ji I would like to tell you and that is that I will take legal advice and whatever property the ED (Enforcement Directorate) will attach and the money are involved, the common man's money, I will see that each and every paisa should return to the person concerned.

"We will strictly do that. On behalf of me, you can promise them that whatever property is attached by ED, that money will be returned to the people, those who had invested in the bank," PM Modi said.

One of the major cooperative scams was reported by the ruling CPI(M)-controlled Karuvannur Service Cooperative Bank in Thrissur district. The matter is currently being investigated by the ED, which has arrested a few individuals and interrogated local leaders of the CPI(M) in Thrissur district for their alleged involvement in it.

The central agency had also attached properties of a few persons allegedly involved in the scam.

The Alathur Lok Sabha constituency includes seven assembly segments, with four located in Palakkad district and three in Thrissur district, respectively.

"That's A First": Woman Gets Dumped By Tinder Date At Hawaii Volcano

A woman who thought she was going to have a dream date in Hawaii ended up being dumped by her Tinder meet-up at a volcano site. According to the New York Post, Julia DaOrazio was on a vacation on Hawaii's Big Island when she matched with her Tinder date Jerry. The duo met in downtown Kailua-Kona, and Ms DaOrazio was instantly charmed by his drawl and friendly manner. "The conversation flowed, and we quickly discerned that we had similar tastes in music, ways of travel, and a shared love for working the glutes," she said.

Ms DaOrazio said she told her date that she had hired a red Mustang convertible for her trip. The two then drove to unassuming locations. She told Mr Jerry a list of things she wanted to do in Hawaii. They then decided to start with the "easiest and closest activity" on the list.

As per the Post, for their first adventure, the couple opted to hike the Makaula O'oma trail. "Like many of Hawaii's trails, it was naturally shaded by lush jungle, yet that didn't do much to cool us down," she said. "After pumping the leg muscles, the beach called, and we soon headed to La'Aloa Bay Beach - known locally as Magic Sands for its shifting seashore - to wash off the sweat," she added.

Two of them then admitted to having a great time together and they agreed to catch up again to cross off another adventure on the list. Two days later, they met at Ms DaOrazio's accommodation, but the woman said she immediately noticed that "something was off" with Mr Jerry.

"I tried to decipher what was up and hoped to turn that frown upside down. After all, we were about to go on an almost three-hour road trip to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, a park with two of the world's most active volcanoes," she said.

Ms DaOrazio tried to lighten the mood several times, but her date's demeanour did not return to friendly. Once they reached their destination, while Ms DaOrazio was ready to hike, Mr Jerry told her he wanted to go back. "I'm going to work out my own way back," Mr Jerry said suddenly.

This took Ms DaOrazio by surprise. "What? We just arrived! We drove three hours to get here," she said, confused. "Yeah, I'm going to hitchhike my way back into town," he replied.

At this moment, Ms DaOrazio realised she had been ditched at a volcano. "I was hitting depression in Earth's depression. Was being in my company that insufferable? I was shocked. Never has a guy walked out on me - let alone at a volcano! Now that's a first," she said.

"There Will Be No Congress In Assam By 2026": Himanta Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed on Monday that Congress MP Rahul Gandhi's future is 'dark', adding that by 2026, there will be no more of the grand old party in the state.

"Voting for the Congress party means voting for Rahul Gandhi; voting for BJP means voting for Narendra Modi. Those who love Narendra Modi and believe that India will become Viswaguru will vote for the BJP in this election. Those who believe in the leadership of Rahul Gandhi, also know that their future is dark. Even Rahul Gandhi's future is also dark and his followers' future is darker," CM Sarma said while speaking to reporters at Biswanath on Monday.

"In the last one and a half months, you have seen a big erosion of Congress as many Congress leaders, workers joined the BJP and AGP. I believe that there will be no Congress party in Assam by 2026. I don't want to comment on Bharat Narah, because I am not in touch with him. But I believe that there will be no more of the Congress party in Assam by 2026, they will survive only in some small pockets," he added.

The Assam Chief Minister also said many more good leaders will continue to join the BJP till the Lok Sabha election and this joining process will be continued after the Lok Sabha election.

He also claimed that Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhupen Kumar Borah will join the BJP in the first part of 2025.

"I have made ready two seats for him (Bhupen Kumar Borah). All Trinamool members of Congress will join us. If I dial the candidate (Congress) for Sonitpur, he will join BJP. But I don't want this. As of now, the Assam Congress is in our hands. It is just like a fixed deposit, when needed, we will bring them. When it is needed for Modiji we will take them. Except 1-2 blue-blooded dynasties, all red-blooded dynasty are ours," CM Sarma said.

The Assam Chief Minister on Monday evening met Ranjit Dutta, BJP candidate for Sonitpur parliamentary constituency.

"Privileged Pedigree Has Disappeared": Vice President's Dig At Opposition

In an apparent dig at the opposition and dynastic politics, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar today said democratic values blossom when there is equality before the law and where there is no patronage, favouritism, or nepotism.

Speaking at the NDTV Indian Of The Year awards, Mr Dhankhar said, "Democratic values optimally blossom and flourish when there is equality before the law when there is transparent and accountable governance, and where patronage, favouritism, and nepotism have no space. There was a time when these three pernicious tendencies dominated our workings. But that is a matter of the past."

The privileged pedigree has disappeared and those who thought they were more equal than the others have realised this to their pain, he asserted.

"The privileged pedigree has disappeared. Equality before the law is the writing on the wall. Those who thought they were immune to the law, above the law, are different than others, have realised it to their pain. What can be a greater pain to the human soul and the young people in a democracy that some people are greater than others and they are more privileged? That system has gone."

"In the process, the morale of the youth has gone up," he said.

The remarks are significant at a time when the country's political discourse is seeing an impassioned debate between the ruling BJP and the Opposition over parivarwaad, or dynastic politics.

Video: Elephant Attacks Another Elephant At Temple Event, Many Injured

A video of an elephant going berserk and attacking another elephant at the Tharakkal temple festival in Kerala has emerged on social media. The incident happened around 10.30 pm on Friday when the elephant, Guruvayur Ravikrishnan, carrying the 'Ammathiruvady' deity, lost control and attacked the other elephant, Puthupally Arjunan.

The video shows the elephant charging at another elephant, Puthupally Arjunan, carrying the 'Arattupuzha' deity, and chasing it for almost one kilometre. The elephant's mahout Sreekumar narrowly escaped after the elephant made three attempts to attack him.

The incident caused panic among the devotees and many people attending the festival suffered injuries. People carried by the elephants sustained injuries too and those seated atop the elephants tried to escape but fell and got hurt.

Both the elephants could be seen charging and chasing each other in the viral video. Both the elephants were later brought under control by the elephant squad, reported local news outlet Mathrubhumi.

The incident comes at a time when the issue of human-animal conflicts continues to haunt Kerala. Nine people have been reported killed in Kerala due to attacks by wild animals.

Recently, a 62-year-old woman was attacked and killed by a wild elephant in a forest area near Athirappally. In February, a 42-year-old man died after being attacked by a wild elephant that strayed into a human settlement near Mananthavad.

Wearing 'Sindoor' Religious Duty Of Woman As It Shows She Is Married: Court

A family court in Indore in Madhya Pradesh has asked a woman to return to her husband's home with immediate effect while observing that wearing the ritualistic 'sindoor' (vermillion) was the duty of a (Hindu) woman as it demonstrates that she is married.

Indore family court Principal Judge NP Singh's direction came while hearing a petition of a man seeking restoration of his rights under Hindu Marriage Act after his wife walked out of the marriage five years ago.

In his order of March 1, the judge said, "When the statement of the woman was recorded in the court, she admitted she was not wearing 'sindoor'. 'Sindoor' is a religious duty of a wife and it shows that the woman is married."

After perusal of the entire submission of the woman, it was clear she had not been abandoned by her husband and that she had left him and wanted a divorce, the order further said.

"She has forsaken her husband. She is not wearing the 'sindoor'," the court said.

In her defence, the woman accused her husband of physical and mental harassment for dowry.

After hearing both sides and going through the material on record, the court said the woman had not submitted any police complaints or reports regarding her allegations.

The petitioner's lawyer Shubham Sharma said his client got married in 2017 and the couple has a 5-year-old son.

Brazilian Woman Who Carried Dead Foetus For 56 Years Dies After Surgery

An 81-year-old woman in Brazil died after undergoing surgery to remove a 56-year-old foetus from her abdomen, Metro reported. The woman, identified as Daniela Vera, unknowingly had an ectopic pregnancy when she was younger and complained to doctors numerous times about pain and a bulge in her belly. She had been feeling unwell with stomach discomforts for several weeks before her doctor's appointment. Sadly, the doctors didn't spot the calcified baby inside her during the first appointment. Instead, they treated her for a water infection, before sending her to another hospital to get 3D scans.

Despite having seven children, Ms Vera's condition went unnoticed until she received the 3D scans. This revealed lithopedion, a rare condition that happens when a baby dies during pregnancy and isn't absorbed by the body, Metro reported.

The 81-year-old then went into surgery, following which she was moved into the intensive care unit (ICU). Sadly, she died the next day, on March 15 after suffering an infection.

Dr Patrick Dezir, the head of the Ponta Pora Hospital health department, explained, "When pregnancy occurs, it must be inside the uterus, but in some situations, pregnancy can occur outside".

"That baby was not clinical, the patient did not have acute pain and did not have major bleeding and this diagnosis goes unnoticed and time will take care of that foreign body that was left inside the woman's abdomen," Dr Dezir added.

Ms Vera's daughter, Rosely Almedia, said, "She was old and we are indigenous, she didn't like going to the doctor, she was afraid of the equipment to take exams. She said that it looked like a baby was moving inside her belly and sometimes she felt sick, but we never suspected that it was that".

Notably, Ms Vera had complained of abdominal pain since her first pregnancy when she was a teenager, her daughter said, as per the outlet.

Ectopic pregnancy is a type of pregnancy where the fertilised egg is conceived outside the womb, where it is not able to survive. Due to the lack of development, the foetus becomes calcified and in such a situation, there is neither severe pain nor bleeding in the body. There are also no visible symptoms until an X-ray is done.

"Shouldn't Have To Pay Higher Prices...": US vs Apple Over iPhone Monopoly

The US Department of Justice sued Apple on Thursday for illegally maintaining a monopoly for its iPhone by stifling competition and imposing exorbitant costs on consumers.

The lawsuit, also brought by multiple US states, attacked the iPhone for raking in hundreds of billions of dollars by making it difficult for consumers to switch away to cheaper smartphones and devices.

The long anticipated case against Apple sees the company founded by Steve Jobs in 1976 clash with Washington after largely escaping US government scrutiny for nearly a half century.

It joins Amazon, Google and Facebook-owner Meta which are also facing antitrust lawsuits in the United States.

News of the lawsuit sent shares in Apple down by as much as 3.75 percent on Wall Street on Thursday.

At the heart of the case is Apple's alleged exclusionary practices that set strict and at times opaque conditions on firms and developers seeking to reach the iPhone's 136 million US users.

According to the lawsuit, these rules and decisions have been designed to force Apple users into staying in the Apple ecosystem and buying the company's more expensive hardware, the iPhone.

"Consumers should not have to pay higher prices because companies violate the antitrust laws," said Attorney General Merrick Garland.

"If left unchallenged, Apple will only continue to strengthen its smartphone monopoly," he added.

Apple fights back

The far-reaching case singled out practices that it said was making Apple richer to the detriment of advancing innovation and technology for consumers.

In a statement, Apple denied the merit of the lawsuit, saying it was "wrong on the facts and the law, and we will vigorously defend against it."

If successful, the suit would "set a dangerous precedent, empowering government to take a heavy hand in designing people's technology," the company added.

The lawsuit for example accused Apple of squashing the creation of Super Apps, one-stop web portals that could exist on an iPhone and give consumers other ways to get services, such as music, photo or movies.

Other big tech giants such as Meta have long dreamed of opening such super-apps on the iPhone, which accounts for roughly half of the smartphone market in the United States.

The accusations also target Apple's wallet, which is the only application allowed on the iPhone to access the technology to make tap payments in stores, forcing others to pay a fee.

Messaging apps are under the microscope too, with prosecutors accusing Apple of making it hard for Apple users to interact easily with Android phone users, coercing them to buying the more expensive iPhone.

The broad case also mentions smartwatches, with the Apple Watch only being available through the iPhone, and competing smartwatches having very limited functionality on the iPhone.

The complaint alleges that these nefarious practices go into other services such as web browsers, entertainment and even automotive services.

In recent years Apple has invested heavily in promoting services as well as hardware as it seeks ways to make money beyond the iPhone, which was introduced in 2007 and changed the world of consumer technology.

But iPhone sales growth has been slowing in recent years, raising pressure on the company to find other sources of revenue.

The DOJ pointed out that Apple's profits exceed any other company in the Fortune 500 and that it exceeds the gross domestic product of more than 100 countries.

In 2023, Apple saw global sales of $383 billion and net profit of $97 billion.

The DOJ's investigation of Apple began in 2019 under the Trump administration.

Apple largely won a US lawsuit from Fortnite-maker Epic Games that has been pursuing Apple in jurisdictions worldwide over the rules and fees it imposes on the iPhone.

In a case brought by Spotify, the EU this month hit Apple with a 1.8-billion-euro ($1.9 billion) fine for preventing European users from accessing information about alternative, cheaper music streaming services.

All Top Leaders Arrested In Delhi Liquor Policy Case. See List

Three top Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders including Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal have been arrested in the Delhi liquor policy case.

K Kavitha, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader and daughter of former Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, is also in jail.

The other two are AAP MP Sanjay Singh and former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia.

The ED's case is that the Delhi liquor policy 2021-22 provided an exceptionally high profit margin of 12 per cent for wholesalers and nearly 185 per cent for retailers. Of the 12 per cent, 6 per cent was to be recovered from wholesalers as kickbacks for AAP leaders, and the "South Group" allegedly gave Rs 100 crore in advance to another accused, Vijay Nair, who was linked to the AAP.

A key focus of the investigation into the Delhi liquor policy case was on an alleged network of middlemen, businessmen and politicians which the central agencies have called the "South Group".

The ED alleged the liquor policy was tweaked to help companies of the "South Group" and Mr Sisodia diluted the policy in their favour without any consultation.

So far, 16 key people linked to alleged money laundering while framing the now-scrapped Delhi liquor policy case have been identified. Some of the accused have become witnesses.

"Take Stringent Action": BJP To Poll Body On Rahul Gandhi's 'Shakti' Remark

The BJP Wednesday lodged a complaint with the Election Commission against Rahul Gandhi for his "fight against a shakti" remarks at a recent rally in Mumbai, and urged the poll panel to take "stringent action" against the Congress leader and issue directions for lodging an FIR against him.

In a memorandum to the poll panel, BJP leaders Hardeep Singh Puri and Om Pathak alleged Mr Gandhi's "fight against a shakti" remarks were rendered with "malicious intention" of insulting the religious values associated with 'shakti' and creating enmity among religions to appease "some religious community".

"The statement made by Gandhi wherein he says that the fight is with Shakti was made with a malicious intention to hurt the religious sentiments of the Hindus. A large section of Hindus in India offer prayers to Shakti in Hinduism to the extent there exists a Shakti sect who refer to the Devi as Shakti," the BJP leaders charged.

"Gandhi's call to fight against Shakti in Hinduism, directly implies that the Congress supporters should fight against the worshipping deities of Hinduism, which creates hatred against Hinduism," they added.

A day after his remarks at the Mumbai rally, Mr Gandhi on Monday clarified that he was not talking about any religious power but the 'shakti' of unrighteousness, corruption and falsehood.

He accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of twisting his words and said he was speaking about the power of which Modi was wearing the mask.

The BJP leaders also alleged that Mr Gandhi made "false and mischievous" claims with regard the authenticity of electoral voting machines (EVMs) while addressing the Mumbai rally and raised questions on the Election Commission as well.

They demanded that the poll panel take action against Mr Gandhi for his remarks about EVMs, contending that such kind of "disinformation and misinformation" without verification of facts was "prejudicial" to national integration.

Mr Gandhi made such remarks about EVMs and the poll panel with an "intention to create public disorder", the BJP leaders charged.

"By raising these kinds of allegations, the Congress and Rahul Gandhi, in a way, are insulting the electorate of India. Furthermore, it is pertinent to mention that in the same event, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah blatantly denounced EVMs as a thief," the BJP leaders said in their petition to the Election Commission.

The BJP leaders demanded that the Election Commission take "stringent action" against Mr Gandhi and also "prosecute" him for his remarks.

"Take stringent action and direct lodging of an FIR and prosecute Rahul Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi may be instructed to offer an unconditional public apology and retraction for his utterances at Shivaji Park event in Mumbai," they urged in their petition.

"Issue a direction to INC and Rahul Gandhi to refrain from posting, publishing, advertising and propagating the said false information through any and all means of communication either spoken, written, audio/virtually representation or otherwise," it said.

The BJP leaders also urged the poll panel to direct social media platform X to take down the video of the event, addressed by Gandhi, and "subsequent tweets and similar tweets" on the same content by other Congress leaders.

They also demanded that the poll panel direct the platform to suspend the official handle of the Congress "for spreading fake news".

"Take cognizance of this egregious violation of the Model Code of Conduct and the Representation of the People Act, 1951 and ensure that such offences are never repeated in future," they added.

The BJP leaders said that "misinformation propagated by Gandhi, including lies about the EVM machines despite authoritative pronouncements by the Supreme Court" can have significant consequences with respect to the trust of the citizen in the election process.

"These threats are especially perilous in today's age since these falsehoods have the capacity to spread rapidly on social media, with platforms unwilling or unable to intervene, fuelling threats to election systems," they said.

Bengaluru Man Foils UPI Scam After Recognising Red Flags. See Post

A scammer targeted a senior vice president at Unacademy in Bengaluru with a fake UPI money transfer scam. The incident, which Hardik Pandya, shared on X, formerly Twitter, involved a seemingly interested buyer contacting him after he listed an iPad on OLX.

The conversation soon moved to WhatsApp where the culprit, posing as "Dilip Vikas," offered immediate payment. The scammer sent screenshots of a supposed money transfer exceeding the agreed amount by Rs 10,000 and requested Mr Pandya to return the difference. However, upon checking his account, Pandya discovered he only received a Re 1 transaction likely used to verify account details. The remaining amount was never sent, exposing the fake transfer and attempted scam.

Along with the screenshot, Mr Pandya wrote, "UPI scam from this morning. Posted an ad for an iPad on OLX. Scammer gets in touch, takes it to WhatsApp and offers to transfer money instantly. Then does this -"

In a subsequent tweet, he wrote, "Obviously, it doesn't take much to know this raised all the alarms from the get go. But the imitation transaction messages sent manually by him was the funniest part!"

See the post here:

The post soon went viral and several users praised Mr Pandya's wits and shared similar experiences.

A user wrote, "OLX is full of such scams right now. There are people pretending to army officers too."

Another user commented, "Olx and quikr are common grounds for these scammers and they will push you to pull down the ad."

The third user commented, "Some offer to transfer money instantly and then send a QR code to scan. They claim "If you scan this, money will be transferred to you. It is the only way"

"I think even OLX hires some fake buyers. It is tough to proof but these guys really press you to delete the AD and say they are coming to buy from you without negotiating. They never come and you have to now upload a paid AD on OLX," a user wrote.

"Always keep 0 balance in your bank account when trying to sell anything on OLX and such platforms. Same happened with me when i was trying to sell my desktop. Only thing was that the scammer got scammed by me for Rs 1. Red flag: asking you to close the ad before payment," the fifth user commented.

Watch: Mushfiqur's 'Broken Helmet' Celebration Mocking Mathews, SL Viral

Veteran Bangladesh cricketer Mushfiqur Rahim's broken helmet celebration following the ODI series victory over Sri Lanka added another chapter in the rivalry of the two cricketing nations. The celebration was a reference to Sri Lanka's Angelo Matthews getting timed-out due to a helmet issue when the two sides faced each other in the Cricket World Cup 2023. This was also a response to Sri Lanka cricketers celebrating their T20I series victory over Bangladesh with a timed-out celebration. The video of the celebration has gone viral on social media with various users commenting on the gesture.

Rishad Hossain played an attacking innings of 48 after substitute Tanzid Hasan Tamim hit 84 off 81 balls Monday, steering Bangladesh to a four-wicket win and a 2-1 ODI series victory over Sri Lanka.

Set a modest target after Janith Liyanage's unbeaten 101 guided Sri Lanka to 235 all out in 50 overs, Bangladesh raced to 237-6 in 40.2 overs.

Rishad remained unbeaten on 48 off just 18 balls.

The hosts were in danger when Wanindu Hasaranga forced Mehdiy Hasan Miraz, the last recognised batsman, to give a catch to Pramod Madushan for 25, with Bangladesh still 58 runs away from victory.

But Rishad dispatched the first ball he faced over midwicket for six and did not look back.

He hit four sixes and five fours in his whirlwind innings before Mushfiqur Rahim, 37 not out, finished the game with a boundary off Maheesh Theekshana.

Tanzid led the initial charge, replacing Soumya Sarkar in the second innings as a concussion sub, despite Lahiru Kumara wreaking havoc with 4-48.

US Woman Who Left Baby Home Alone While On Vacation Gets Life Sentence

A 32-year-old woman in the United States has been sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to the murder of her 16-month-old daughter, who prosecutors say was left home alone for 10 days while her mother vacationed. According to Fox News, the woman, identified as Kristel Candelario, pleaded guilty last month to one count of aggravated murder and one count of endangering children. She committed the "ultimate betrayal" by abandoning her daughter Jailyn without food or water last summer so she could vacation in Detroit and Puerto Rico, a judge told her on Monday.

"Just as you didn't let Jailyn out of her confinement, so too you should spend the rest of your life in a cell without freedom," County Common Pleas Court Judge Brendan Sheehan told the mother. "The only difference will be, the prison will at least feed you and give you liquid that you denied her," the judge added.

According to the prosecutors, last year in June, Candelario left her daughter "alone and unattended" at her home in Cleveland and did not return until 10 days later. "Upon returning, Candelario found Jailyn unresponsive and called the police. The Cleveland Division of Police and the Cleveland Division of Fire responded to the scene and Jailyn was pronounced deceased," the prosecutor's office said in a statement, as per Fox News

"An investigation conducted by CPD's Homicide Unit revealed that Candelario left her child alone and unattended from June 6 to June 16 to vacation in Detroit, Michigan, and in Puerto Rico. Jailyn was extremely dehydrated at the time of death," the office added.

"Jailyn was discovered in a Pack-N-Play pen on a liner soiled with urine and feces with soiled blankets," the statement read.

The mother, on the other hand, claims to have struggled with depression and other mental health issues. When given a chance to speak, she said that she has prayed daily for forgiveness. "There's so much pain that I have in regards to the loss of my baby, Jailyn," she said in court. "I'm extremely hurt about everything that happened. I am not trying to justify my actions, but nobody knew how much I was suffering and what I was going through," she said. "God and my daughter have forgiven me," she claimed.

Apple In Talks To Bring Google's Gemini AI To iPhone, Says Report

Apple is in advanced negotiations with Google to adopt its powerful Gemini AI models for the iPhone, Bloomberg reported on Monday.

The move, if confirmed and resulting in a deal, would answer one of the big questions about the iPhone-maker's AI strategy, which has been criticized as lagging its tech giant rivals.

Google's share price soared by well over six percent on the news. Apple's was up by as much as 2.5 percent.

According to Bloomberg, Apple is seeking to partner with Google for its next iOS operating system release and will likely feature on its next iPhone, expected later this year.

Apple and Google are already locked in a search engine partnership that sees Google pay Apple tens of billions of dollars every year to give the search engine a prominent place on the iPhone.

That long-running search engine deal is facing a historic lawsuit from the US Department of Justice for alleged violations of antitrust law.

Bloomberg reported that Apple had also held talks with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, to partner on generative AI, without providing more details.

Apple CEO Tim Cook last month said there would be major updates in store on the AI front, though some observers may be disappointed that the company is teaming up with others to deliver on AI.

"For Google, any hypothetical deal with Apple could mean they essentially 'own' generative AI on mobile devices (Android + iOS)," said Colin Sebastian, an analyst at Baird.

"It also means Apple may not be in a position to catch-up to GenAI leaders, at least not in the next generation of devices," he added.

"Ee Sala Cup Namde": Social Media In Frenzy As RCB Clinch WPL 2024 Title

An all-round Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) led by yet another solid knock by Ellyse Perry and brilliant bowling spells from spinners Shreyanka Patil and Sophie Molineux captured their first-ever Women's Premier League (WPL) title after defeating Delhi Capitals by eight wickets in the title clash at Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday. This is RCB's first-ever T20 title across both WPL and the Indian Premier League (IPL). Chasing 114, RCB started off cautiously, getting just 18 runs in their first four overs. Openers Smriti Mandhana and Sophie Devine did not take much risks, except for two boundaries by the New Zealand batter.

The Red and Gold side had a decent powerplay. At the end of six overs, RCB was 25/0, with Smriti (12*) and Sophie (13*) unbeaten.

Devine let her arms loose in the seventh over, smashing Radha Yadav for three fours and a six. She got 18 runs from that over and that took RCB to 43/0 in seven overs.

With a couple by Devine, RCB reached the 50-run mark in eight overs.

Shikha Pandey ended the threatening stand between Mandhana and Sophie, trapping the latter leg-before-wicket for 32 in 27 balls, with five fours and a six. RCB was 49/1 in 8.1 overs.

RCB's superstar all-rounder Ellyse Perry was next up on the crease and brought up RCB's 50-run mark in 8.2 overs.

Halfway through the innings, RCB was 56/1, with Perry (3*) and Smriti (21*) unbeaten.

For next few overs, DC managed to keep the RCB batters shut and the run rate low. A boundary each by Mandhana and Perry in the 13th over by Arundhati Yadav eased off some pressure, taking the score to 72/1 in 13 overs.

The budding partnership was finally broken by Minnu Mani, who got the wicket of skipper Smriti for 31 in 39 balls, with three fours. The left-handed batter's mistimed shot got into the hands of Arundhati Reddy at mid-on. RCB was 82/2 in 15 overs, needing 31 in the final five overs.

An economical 16th over by Alice Capsey brought down the equation to 27 in final four overs. In the next over by Mini, RCB gathered nine runs, including a four by Richa Ghosh, leaving the team with 18 runs to get in three overs.

The next over by Jonassen also produced a boundary by Perry, leaving RCB with 11 to get in two overs.

RCB's equation came down to five runs in the final over. Richa hit the winning shot, finishing RCB's innings at 115/2 in 19.3 overs, with Richa (17*) and Perry (35*) unbeaten.

Minnu and Shikha took a wicket each.

Earlier, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) spinners, particularly Sophie Molineux and Shreyanka Patil helped the side overcome a solid start by Delhi Capitals openers Meg Lanning and Shefali Verma and bundled out the hosts for 113.

After winning the toss, DC batters Lanning and Shefali came out to the crease. Both batters started their innings with an aggressive approach as they put on a 50-run partnership inside five overs.

Shefali was sent back to the pavilion in the eighth over after playing a blistering knock of 44 runs in 27 balls which was laced with two fours and three sixes.

In the same over Sophie Molineux dismissed the two in-form batters Jemimah Rodrigues and Alice Capsey were sent back to the dressing room without opening their account. DC were 64/3 after eight overs despite getting an outstanding start from the opening batters.

Lanning got dismissed when the team score was 74 after scoring 23 runs with the help of three boundaries.

Inside seven runs, the DC franchise lost two more wickets as first Marizanne Kapp got dismissed after scoring just eight runs when the team score was 80 and then at 81 DC lost the wicket of Jess Jonassen who was able to score just three runs.

Right-hand batters Radha Yadav (12) and Arundhati Reddy (10) played small knocks but that were not enough for the side. DC managed to cross the 100-run mark in 15.5 overs.

But the hosts could not play their full quota of 20 overs and were bundled out for 113 runs in 18.3 overs.

The highest wicket-taker for RCB was Shreyanka who snapped four wickets in her spell of 3.3 overs where she conceded just 12 runs.

Three wickets were grabbed by Molineux in her spell of four overs where she conceded 20 runs. Two wickets were grabbed by young leg-spinner Asha Sobhana in her spell of three overs where she conceded 14 runs.

Ram Mandir To Guarantees: 10 Big Issues That May Dominate Lok Sabha Polls

Promises galore and guarantees by various political parties will compete and clash as high-decibel campaigns get underway for the Lok Sabha polls. Here are the 10 key issues likely to be the centre of discussion in the seven-phase elections that begin on April 19:

'Modi Ki Guarantee'

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, brimming with confidence that he will get a third consecutive term, has pitched 'Modi Ki Guarantee' as the main theme of his campaign. 'Modi Ki Guarantee', as described on the PM's website, is a guarantee for the development of youth, empowerment of women, welfare of farmers, and all those people who are marginalised and vulnerable who have been ignored for decades.

The idea is also about the government's aim of ensuring saturation of all welfare schemes. It is likely to be the 'catchphrase' in this election, the centre of much of the verbal duel between rivals.

Congress' Nyay Guarantees

The grand old party found some of its mojo back in the state elections of Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana when it pitched guarantees to the people which clicked electorally. For the Lok Sabha polls, the party has put forward its 5 'Nyay' guarantees aimed at ensuring justice for youth, farmers, women, labourers, as well as participatory justice.

The 'Nyay' guarantees have been presented before the people during the Manipur to Mumbai Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. The Congress' manifesto is likely to be framed around these guarantees and the party would design its campaign around them. Whether it will result in the party's electoral resurgence is still to be seen.

Unemployment And Price Rise

The INDIA bloc, including the Congress, has been raising the issue of unemployment and rising prices of essential commodities. They have stated repeatedly that the lack of jobs is the single biggest issue and sought to corner the government over the issue. The BJP has hit back citing job growth and a fast-growing economy. The poll season will see intensifying debate over these bread-and-butter issues.

CAA, Abrogation of Article 370

These have been part of the BJP's longstanding promises to the people. The BJP has and will continue to project its achievement of implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, and the abrogation of Article 370 for Jammu and Kashmir.

The party's government has also passed a law on the uniform civil code in Uttarakhand as a precursor to its objective of devising such a law nationally. The Modi government has projected these actions to assert that it believes in the mantra of "walking the talk". The opposition has slammed these moves as attempts to create, divide and impose uniformity. The debate on these issues is likely to get sharper and more aggressive in the poll season.

Ram Mandir

The January 22 consecration ceremony at the Ram temple in Ayodhya was marked by the BJP with tremendous enthusiasm. The symbolism of PM Modi leading the ceremony and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat along with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath being at the forefront during the ceremony was not lost on anyone. BJP leaders have credited the Prime Minister with making a centuries-old dream come true.

With saffron flags fluttering in most parts of the Hindi-speaking belt to mark the occasion, the impact of this can be felt by everyone. Even opposition leaders concede that the Ram temple has given the BJP the advantage in northern India. Analysts believe that much of the BJP's confidence of getting at least 370 seats stems from this 'Ram temple wave'.

Electoral Bonds Data

The Election Commission has made the data on electoral bonds public. The Congress has demanded a high-level probe by the Supreme Court against the ruling BJP and freezing of its bank accounts for alleged corruption in the electoral bonds scheme.

The issue has come to the fore right before the polls and the opposition has seized on it but whether it will work at the grassroots level or not is still to be seen. It would, however, certainly be one of the talking points during the campaign.

'Amrit Kaal' Versus 'Anyay Kaal'

Another likely recurrent campaign theme during the poll season would be the BJP's assertion that the Modi dispensation assured good governance, fast-paced growth and a vision for the future.

The Congress on the other hand has dubbed the 10 years of the Modi government 'anyay kaal' (era of injustice) marked by "unemployment, rising prices, capture of institutions, attack on the Constitution, and rising economic inequalities".

While the opposition INDIA bloc is likely to highlight the government's 'failures' to claim that the last 10 years have been about show over substance, the BJP would counter it with arguments such as tiding over the pandemic, reducing poverty, free ration scheme and other welfare measures for the poor.

Farmer Issues, Minimum Support Price

The farmers' agitation at the borders of Delhi just ahead of polls is also likely to dominate the discourse with the opposition alleging that farmers had been "betrayed" by the government and promising to provide legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price if its bloc comes to power.

BJP leaders have been holding talks with farmer leaders to assuage their concerns and have been alleging that many of the agitators were politically motivated. The government has also stressed that its PM-KISAN scheme aid has transformed the lives of farmers. As with most elections, farmer issues would be critical to the discourse.

Clash Of Ideologies

This election also marks a crucial phase in what many call the "battle of ideologies" between the BJP and the Congress. Both parties would present their ideological principles before the people and ask them to choose one.

'Viksit Bharat' Vision

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asserted that the goal of the country is to become a developed nation. He has stated that his government's actions are committed to achieve the goal by 2047. The vision for a Viksit Bharat is likely to dominate the BJP's campaign while the opposition has been dubbing it as "another jumla". However, it would remain a dominant theme during the course of the campaign.

Navy's 40-Hour Rescue Op: 35 Pirates Surrender, 17 Crew Members Freed

The Indian warship INS Kolkata successfully cornered and coerced all 35 pirates to surrender on Saturday, ensuring the safe evacuation of 17 crew members from the pirate vessel without any injury, the Indian Navy said in an official statement.

In the rescue operation, which lasted for the last 40 hours, INS Kolkata intercepted the under-attack pirate ship Ruen, sailing almost 2600 km from the shores of the Indian Coast, and forced the pirate ship to stop through calibrated actions.

In the action to safely rescue the crew members and take full control of the distressed vessel, the operation was supported by the Indian warship INS Subhadra, High Altitude Long Endurance (HALE RPA) drones, P8I maritime patrol aircraft, and MARCOS PRAHARs airdropped by C-17 aircraft.

Later, the vessel was also sanitized for the presence of illegal arms, ammunition, and contraband.

Earlier, the Indian Navy shared about the ongoing rescue operation to evacuate crew members onboard a distressed vessel.

The ex-MV Ruen, which had been commandeered by Somali pirates on December 14, 2023, reappeared as a pirate vessel, threatening merchant shipping in the high seas. Responding swiftly to the threat, an Indian Navy warship engaged the pirate vessel on March 15, the Navy said in its statement.

The pirates aboard the vessel were called upon by the Indian Navy to surrender immediately and release any civilians they may be holding against their will, the Navy said.

The Indian Navy reiterated its unwavering commitment to maintaining maritime security and ensuring the safety of seafarers navigating through these perilous waters. This action by the Indian Navy serves as a testament to India's resolve to combat piracy and uphold international maritime laws.
