New FASTag Rules To Come Into Effect On August 1: Check Details

Starting August 1, 2024, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) will enforce new guidelines for FASTag users, focusing on updated Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements. FASTag is a pre-paid tag facility for vehicles that allows non-stop movement of traffic without having to wait at the toll plazas. The FASTag KYC check has been introduced to enhance the efficiency of the electronic toll collection system and provide seamless movement at toll plazas.

Here are the key changes:

  1. KYC Update: FASTag users must update their KYC details until October 31, especially if their FASTag is between 3 to 5 years old
  2. Replacement of Old FASTags: Any FASTags older than five years must be replaced.
  3. Linking Vehicle Details: Vehicle registration number and chassis number must be linked with the FASTag
  4. New Vehicle Registration Update: New vehicle owners must update their FASTag with the vehicle's registration number within 90 days of purchase.
  5. Database Verification: FASTag providers must verify their databases
  6. Photo Upload Requirement: To improve identification and security, FASTag providers are now required to upload clear, high-quality photos of the vehicle's front and side.
  7. Mobile Number Linking: To ensure seamless communication and timely updates, it's mandatory to link each FASTag to a mobile number.

About FASTag

FASTag is a revolutionary pre-paid tag facility for vehicles that uses technology to eliminate bottlenecks on toll plazas across India. Once the FASTag is active, it is affixed on the vehicle's windscreen and information on it is passively read by the antennae at the toll plaza, debiting the toll amount from one's bank account that is linked to the FASTag.

With a penetration rate of around 98% and over eight crore users, FASTag has revolutionised the country's electronic toll collection system. It employs Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology for toll payments directly from the account linked to it.

Users can buy FASTags from toll plazas, petrol pumps of Indian Oil, Hindustan Petroleum, Bharat Petroleum, banks, PAYTM and Amazon. Using FASTag comes with several benefits. It provides uninterrupted traffic movement, helps save paper, reduces pollution, and traffic congestion, and is convenient and cashless.

Opinion: Why Are So Many Tech Graduates In India Unemployable? It's The 'Cliff Effect'

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

A young tech graduate, full of potential, steps into the job market, only to find their skills outdated and their opportunities limited. This scenario is all too common in India, where despite substantial investments in higher education, a stark divide has emerged among students, particularly in the computer science stream. I call this phenomenon the 'Cliff Effect' as it highlights the precipitous drop in the quality of education beyond top-tier tech institutes like the IITs and IIScs. This 'cliff', which leaves many students underprepared and alienated from cutting-edge advancements, underscores the need for comprehensive reform in India's computer science education.

Squandering The Demographic Dividend

As much as 65% of India's population is under the age of 35. Yet, many lack the necessary skills required to function in a modern economy. According to the recent Economic Survey, just about half of India's youth is employable. Another report, by NASSCOM, flags a significant employability gap among engineering graduates in India. This gap has far-reaching implications, considering that India aims to become a $5 trillion economy by 2025.

The quality of computer science education across many Indian institutions is far from what's needed in today's job market. Universities do not update their syllabi frequently, leaving students unprepared for the demands of the industry. The lack of experiential learning and hands-on training further exacerbates the problem. Compounding all these issues is the stagnant entry-level pay offered by some major IT companies in India. Despite the industry's growth, salaries have seen little change over the years. For instance, one major company's campus placement offer was just about Rs 3.5 lakh per annum, compared to an average of Rs 4.15 lakh per annum a decade ago. The stagnation indicates the lack of value ascribed to fresh graduates.

India, all in all, needs a systemic overhaul in education and industry practices.

Beyond Just 'Coding'

Knowing how to code is no longer enough. Thanks to AI, the job landscape is evolving rapidly, and employers in the coming years will seek candidates with deep domain knowledge and an interdisciplinary approach to problem-solving. This shift will be crucial because technology alone cannot drive innovation; it must be complemented by a thorough understanding of the domain in which it is applied. Only then can solutions be developed to effectively address real-world problems.

For instance, a coder with a deep understanding of agriculture can design AI-driven solutions to optimise crop yields, manage pest control, and predict weather patterns, thereby enhancing productivity and sustainability in the agricultural sector. Similarly, a coder who understands pedagogy can develop advanced learning platforms that cater to diverse educational needs, personalise learning experiences, and track student progress effectively.

India stands to benefit significantly from computer scientists who possess interdisciplinary skills and don't rely solely on technical knowledge. In that light, integrating interdisciplinary courses in computer science education is important to foster a holistic understanding of technology and its impact on society. It is essential that the next generation of technologists embodies responsible and trustworthy AI values and is aware of and actively addressing challenges like privacy, security, and other ethical concerns.

An Interdisciplinary Framework

To build an interdisciplinary approach to India's computer science education, it is essential to foster collaborations between universities, industry experts, and policymakers to ensure that the curriculum is both relevant and future-proof. Universities should design programmes that include mandatory courses on ethics, data privacy, cybersecurity, and AI. Incorporating case studies and practical examples from various industries can help students grasp the real-world applications of their technical skills.

Practical training should be a cornerstone of this interdisciplinary approach. Internships, live projects, and workshops should be mandatory components. Establishing partnerships with other academic departments can promote cross-disciplinary projects, fostering a holistic understanding of technology's impact on different fields. Additionally, universities should create platforms for students to engage with industry professionals through guest lectures, mentorship programmes, and industry-led workshops.

Mozilla Foundation's Responsible Computing Challenge in India (RCC), backed by USAID, exemplifies this approach. It funds and supports the development of curricula that combine computer science with ethics, social sciences, and interdisciplinary knowledge. The RCC aims to revolutionise the teaching of technology and computer science by embedding responsible computing practices into the education system. By integrating ethics and interdisciplinary approaches into computer science curricula, RCC fosters a more inclusive computational future, as well as a culture of ethical innovation.

Breaking The Status Quo

Building an interdisciplinary approach in computer science education is fraught with challenges. One significant obstacle is the institutional framework, which often clings to the status quo. Many institutions are resistant to reform. While most educators are dedicated to providing the best for their students, a substantial number also harbour a "this-is-how-we-have-always-done-it" attitude, which hinders progress and innovation.

Additionally, there is a crucial need to convince parents to think beyond traditional programmes. Many parents, understandably, want their kids to follow 'safe bet', conventional career paths over more innovative and interdisciplinary fields. Changing this mindset is vital for students to have diverse educational experiences that equip them with the skills needed for the complexities of the modern workforce.

Indian Influencer Under Fire For Mocking Chinese Locals: "Racist, Uncouth"

Jaspreet Kaur Dyora, a social media influencer from India, is facing criticism online for her disrespectful behaviour while travelling in China. A video posted by Ms Kaur shows her roaming the streets of China and mocking the locals by passing derogatory and rude comments in Hindi.

The video begins with Ms Kaur saying, “Jaise aap log corona de sakte ho world ko, toh kya mein aapko trauma de sakti hu? (Just like how you gave the world corona, can I give you trauma in exchange?)''

Ms Kaur's comments in the video include asking a food vendor about the type of animal they slaughtered, inquiring about the quality of a bridge because it's "made in China," and asking people if they're wearing knock-off brands. She asks them if they are from Sarojini Nagar, as they could be seen wearing a ''Gucci copy.''.

This video was shared in March, though it has gone viral now.

Here's the video:

The video has faced severe backlash, with netizens calling out her behaviour as ''offensive'' and ''racist''. Many expressed disappointment, stating that there's a thin line between being funny and being disrespectful and accused her of defaming India.

One user wrote, ''Why do some people want to act like this and bring shame to others? I don't understand.''

Another wrote, ''This makes me sad to see this type of content. There is a thin line between being funny and disrespectful. This might get you lots of engagement for sure, but it won't last long as a person. They are the sweetest people. Sorry from India.''

A third said, ''These words are harassment, and it is criminal offence, you will be charged if someone report to Indian police or Chinese police.'' A fourth stated, ''These type of influencers do more harm than good. Totally racist and uncouth way to treat random people for no reason and film them.''

A fifth added, ''This is not good. Disrespecting other human being in their own country. If someone from Europe does the same in India, how would we feel?''

Air Canada Flight Cancelled After Staff's Meltdown Over Blanket Request

An Air Canada flight from Morocco to Montreal was cancelled on Friday morning following an altercation between a passenger and a flight attendant. According to the New York Post, the argument occurred when a passenger requested a blanket due to excessive air conditioning, which enraged the flight attendant. She yelled at the passenger, called the police, and asked the passenger to disembark.

The flight attendant was heard shouting in French, ''You will behave or we will get off! I'll tell the captain right away. Yes or no?''

When a passenger asked the flight attendant to call the captain, she refused and said, ''I don't want any bullying against my crew.'' She then stormed up the aisle, turned around and shouted, ''Everyone behaves! Be quiet … or you're getting off.''

In support of the passenger, other passengers onboard also left the flight, leading to the cancellation. Flight radar data shows that flight AC73 was taxiing to the runway before returning to the terminal.

Here's the video:

Air Canada confirmed that the flight was cancelled, with a different crew brought in to take the passengers to their destination on Sunday. The airline stated that they are taking the incident seriously and will take appropriate action. They also apologised to their customers and offered compensation for the inconvenience.

A representative for Air Canada added, ''We take this issue extremely seriously. It is being reviewed, and we will take the right action. We apologize to our customers and deeply regret that their experience today fell far short of what they have come to expect when flying with Air Canada.''

Israel Carries Out "Targeted" Strike In Lebanese Capital As Tensions Rise

The Israeli military said it carried out a targeted strike in Beirut on Tuesday against the Hezbollah commander it said was responsible for a strike in the Golan Heights that killed 12 children and teenagers at the weekend.

A loud blast was heard and a plume of smoke could be seen rising above the southern suburbs - a stronghold of Lebanese armed group Hezbollah - at around 7:40 p.m. (1640 GMT), a Reuters witness said.

"The IDF carried out a targeted strike in Beirut, on the commander responsible for the murder of the children in Majdal Shams and the killing of numerous additional Israeli civilians," the Israeli Defence Forces said in a statement.

It said it had issued no new instructions for civil defence in Israel following the strike.

A senior Lebanese security source said the commander's fate remained unclear.

Lebanon's state-run national news agency said an Israeli strike had targeted the area around Hezbollah's Shura Council in the Haret Hreik neighbourhood of the capital.

Beirut has been on edge for days ahead of an anticipated Israeli attack in retaliation for a strike on the Druze village of Majdal Shams in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights that killed a dozen youngsters.

Israel and the United States have blamed Hezbollah for the attack. Hezbollah has denied responsibility.

"BJP Won't Ever Give Me A Second Chance": Former Wrestling Body Chief

Former MP from Kaiserganj and Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh - denied a ticket from Uttar Pradesh in this election amid glare over sexual harassment allegations against him -- today said he would never get a second chance from the party.

Back in May, asked if the allegations had cost him a poll ticket, the former MP had said, "My son has got a ticket". Karan Bhushan Singh has won the constituency -- which his father had represented since 2009 -- in the general election that followed.

Talking to reporters in Paraspur today, Brij Bhushan Singh said, "The BJP will never give me a chance now. I know the party will not give me a chance. I don't dream like Mungerilal. Those who want to, can".

The former chief of the Wrestling Federation of India has been accused of sexually harassing several women wrestlers.

Amid a massive row over the allegations and a weeks-long protest by the country's top wrestlers last year, he was removed from the top post of the Federation. He was not allowed to contest the Lok Sabha election either and his son was fielded instead.

The trial in the case started last week. Indian Penal Code sections relating to sexual harassment, use of force against a woman and criminal intimidation have been slapped on the heavyweight leader.

He has pleaded not guilty, denying any wrongdoing. "When I have not committed any mistake, why will I admit it?" he had said.

Today, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh had gone on a tour of his former parliamentary constituency in Gonda district of UP. He had made a stopover at Paraspur, where a Samajwadi Party leader, Om Prakash Singh, had been murdered in broad daylight. He had gone there to meet the family members.

The Yogi Adityanath government, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh said, "does not support criminals". "The police are working on the murder case. I demand financial help from the Chief Minister," he said.

A member of a right-wing group carrying a 'kanwar' on her shoulders tried to enter the Taj Mahal to offer 'Gangajal' on Monday, with the group claiming that the monument was a Lord Shiva temple called 'Tejo Mahalaya'. However, she was stopped by the policemen of 'Taj Suraksha' deployed at the barrier of the west gate of the Taj Mahal.

She was stopped at the barrier of the west gate and was not able to enter the Taj Mahal, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Taj Suraksha, Syed Areeb Ahmad told PTI.

"After some time, she decided on her own to offer the 'Gangajal' at the Rajeshwar temple," Ahmad added.

Meenu Rathore, who claimed herself to be the district president of the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha in Agra, insisted police officials allow her to offer the 'Gangajal' in "Tejo Mahalaya".

She further claimed that Lord Shiva came in her dreams and asked her to offer the 'Gangajal' at the monument.

"I came to Tejo Mahalaya to offer the 'Gangajal'. Lord Shiv called me in my dreams and I brought kanwar to offer at Tejo Mahalaya. But, they (policemen) have stopped me from going ahead," Rathore said.

Sanjay Jaat, a spokesperson of the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha, said, "It is our right to offer the 'Ganga Jal' in Taj Mahal as Taj Mahal is 'Tejo Mahalaya', a temple of Lord Shiva. She brought kanwar from Soron ji in Kasganj and reached Agra after two days."

Promising To Be Game Changer, BJP Ended Up Being...: Naveen Patnaik

Leader of the Opposition in Odisha Assembly, Naveen Patnaik, on Monday claimed that the BJP came to power in the state promising to be a game changer, but ended up becoming just a "name changer".

He also alleged that the government did not provide enough funds in the budget for several schemes the saffron party promised in its election manifesto.

While participating in the general discussion on the annual budget for fiscal 2024-25 in the assembly, the Biju Janata Dal president asserted that the BJP altered the names of 45 schemes of the previous BJD government.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who also holds the finance portfolio, presented the BJP government's maiden budget on July 25.

"The BJP said its government will be a game changer, but unfortunately it has ended up being a name changer. It has presented a name-changing and colour-changing budget," said Mr Patnaik who was the chief minister of Odisha for five terms.

He claimed that 80 per cent of the previous BJD administration's schemes were repeated in the BJP government's budget.

"The BJP formed the government by promising people that they would bring paribartan (change). After going through the budget documents, I find this government has changed the names of 45 schemes," said the BJD president.

It shows the robustness, pro-people and progressive character of the schemes designed and implemented by the BJD government, he claimed.

Though Mr Patnaik did not explain what he meant by "colour change", he apparently referred to the change of the colour of LAccMI buses (an affordable bus service for villagers) from green to saffron after the BJP came to power in the state last month.

Mentioning several promises made by the BJP before the elections, Mr Patnaik claimed that the budget did not provision for funds required to implement them.

The government will need Rs one lakh crore to implement the Subhadra scheme but the budget mentioned only Rs 10,000 crore, he said.

"This will cover less than 10 per cent of the over two crore women of Odisha. What about the rest 1.80 crore women? Mr Patnaik said.

Under the scheme named after Lord Jagannath's sister, cash vouchers of Rs 50,000 will be provided to women of the state.

Mr Patnaik said the BJP promised to increase social security pension to Rs 3,500 per month. There are about 50 lakh pensioners in the state, out of which hardly one lakh will benefit as per the budget allocation, he claimed.

"What will happen to the rest 49 lakh pensioners between the age of sixty years to eighty years of age including widows, PWDs and distressed people? You need about Rs 21,000 crore per year to fulfil this promise," he pointed out.

Referring to BJP's announcement of Rs 3100 as MSP per quintal of paddy to farmers, Patnaik said that the allocation kept in the budget will not be adequate to cover even 30 per cent of the peasants.

This apart, Mr Patnaik said that the BJP has promised 3000 units of free electricity. The Central government has planned free power for one crore houses for the entire country and Odisha's share may be three lakh houses, he said.

"We have one and half crore houses in the state. Is this the free electricity you promised to the people?" the former chief minister said.

Mr Patnaik claimed that in the next five years, the BJP won't be able to cover even five per cent of Odisha's population under the 3000 units of free electricity scheme.

To create 25 lakh 'Lakhpati Didis' (self-help group members) by 2027 as promised by the BJP, the government will need about Rs 20,000 crore, while the allocation is only Rs 1,000 core for this, Patnaik said.

He also demanded that the government table the detailed list of 'Lakhpati Didis' in the assembly.

Referring to the BJP's promise of a developed Odisha by 2036, Mr Patnaik said the budget provides Rs 20 crore for the industrial corridor connecting Rourkela-Sambalpur-Paradip and Dhamra by June 2027. A corridor like this will not cost less than Rs one lakh crore, he claimed.

Sharpening his criticism of the government, the BJD president described the BJP as a 'Jumla' (gimmick) party.

"I am sorry, but you (BJP) have cheated the people of Odisha", the BJD chief said.

PM, Biren Singh's First Face-To-Face On Manipur Violence: Sources

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh had a one-on-one meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his ongoing visit to Delhi. Mr Singh and PM Modi had discussed the situation in the state that was hit massive ethnic violence last year, sources told NDTV amid much speculation over the meeting.

The Chief Minister is in Delhi for a special conclave of Chief Ministers from BJP-ruled states. But the 25-minute closed door session was specially scheduled to ensure that the state sticks to the Centre's peace plan for the state, sources said.

Union ministers Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh were also present for the meeting, but no officials from the Centre or the state attended it, sources said, underscoring its exclusivity.

The meeting comes amid massive Opposition pressure on the BJP over the Prime Minister's alleged silence on Manipur. Slogans of Manipur had rent Lok Sabha as the Opposition interrupted PM Modi's speech on the Motion of Thanks following President Droupadi Murmu's joint address for over two hours.

The BJP, though, has been especially focussed on Manipur after the two Lok Sabha seats in the northeastern state went to the Congress in the recent general election.

The meeting also comes on a day that Manipur governor Anusiya Uikey was removed and new Assam governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya was given additional charge of Manipur.

Over the last year, the clashes between the valley-dominant Meitei community and nearly two dozen tribes known as Kukis -- a term given by the British in colonial times -- who are dominant in some hill areas of Manipur, has killed over 220 people and internally displaced nearly 50,000.

The general category Meiteis want to be included under the Scheduled Tribes category, while the nearly two dozen tribes that share ethnic ties with people in neighbouring Myanmar's Chin State and Mizoram, want a separate administrative carved out of Manipur, citing discrimination and unequal share of resources and power with the Meiteis.

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval meanwhile has gone to Myanmar, where ethnic pro-democracy rebels are fighting the junta. 40,000 Myanmar refugees living in Mizoram, and a few thousands in Manipur.

No Entry For Devotees Clad In "Skimpy Dress" In This Madhya Pradesh Temple

Devotees clad in "skimpy western dress" and shorts will not be allowed to enter Goddess Kalika temple in Ratlam city of Madhya Pradesh, its priest said.

"Devotees dressed in western and skimpy attire and shorts (half pants) won't be allowed to enter the temple to protect its sanctity," priest Rajendra Sharma told PTI.

Several plaques mentioning the type of banned clothes are put up around this four-century-old temple.

"Any devotee clad in indecent dress won't be allowed to enter the temple or the sanctum sanatorium," Mr Sharma said, adding that such devotees can have a darshan from outside.

The temple is looked after by the Ratlam district administration under the Court of Wards Act.

"I have learnt the temple management committee's decision to ban the western outfits," tehsildar Rishabh Thakur said.

Mr Sharma claimed King Ratan Singh, who carved Ratlam, had built this temple 400 years ago and consecrated the clan goddess.

Welcoming the decision, a devotee said the western attire is an attack on India's rich culture and Sanatan dharma.

Besides the reigning deity, idols of Maa Chamunda and Maa Annapurna are also consecrated in the temple, frequent by a huge number of devotees from Ratlam and elsewhere.

A garba festival is organised on the temple premises during Navratri.

Centre Criticises Kerala For Appointing Official For "External Cooperation"

State governments should not intrude into matters beyond their constitutional jurisdiction, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Thursday criticising the Kerala government for appointing a secretary for "external cooperation".

Citing provisions in the Constitution, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that matters relating to foreign affairs are the "sole prerogative" of the central government.

On July 15, the Kerala government issued an order giving K Vasuki, secretary in the labour and skills department, the additional charge of "the matters connected with external cooperation".

"The Constitution of India under the seventh schedule, list 1 (or the) Union list, item 10, clearly specifies that foreign affairs and all matters which bring the Union into relation with any foreign country, are the sole prerogative of the Union Government," Jaiswal said.

"It is not a concurrent subject and definitely not a state subject. Our position is that state governments should not intrude into matters that are beyond their constitutional jurisdiction," he said.

On Monday, BJP parliamentarian P P Chaudhary raised the issue in Lok Sabha and described the Kerala government's action as "unconstitutional" and an "encroachment" on the responsibilities of the Centre.

"Is the Kerala government treating itself as a separate nation," he asked.

The BJP lawmaker said external cooperation meant dealing with various nations, Indian embassies and missions abroad, functions that formed part of the Union List as per the allocation of business rules.

"As per the allocation of business rules, these functions can only be performed by the Government of India through the Ministry of External Affairs," the MP from Pali in Rajasthan said.

"So, the action on the part of Kerala government by issuing such an order and appointing an IAS officer as foreign secretary is unconstitutional, and it is an encroachment on the union list," he said.

Captain Vikram Batra's Twin Chokes Up Looking At Peak His Brother Captured

Vishal Batra, the twin brother of Kargil War hero Captain Vikram Batra who died fighting Pakistani forces, said he has been coming to Kargil for the last 15 years in memory of his brother. "I realised that I missed out on the first 10 years," Vishal Batra told NDTV, sitting on a rock near a hill in the region where intense fighting took place in 1999.

He choked up while talking about his brother, who was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest military honour.

"Looking at those mighty peaks, I can sense the courage, determination, bravery and the saga of each young officer right from my brother Captain Vikram Batra to Anuj Nayyar and Manoj Pandey. To me, coming here is like doing a tete-a-tete with my brother because unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to meet him when he was in the thick of action in 1999," Vishal Batra told NDTV.

"I treat this place more as a pilgrimage. I came here for the first time in 2009. Since then I have been coming here every alternate year," he said. "Being a twin sibling, I am blessed to keep telling his stories and carry forward his legacy."

Vishal Batra said it was a difficult moment when the news came. "I was only 24. I had never seen a dead body. I hate the word dead body. So when Vikram came in a coffin, we had to go to the command hospital in Palampur and identify the body. I had to sign the documents. It was a very sad moment, somebody asking you to recognise the body," Vishal Batra said.

"I wanted to lift the body during the last rites. I believed that it would be my last touch of my brother," Vishal Batra said, and choked up. "My dad told me I have to lit the pyre. I didn't have the courage. But I had to do it because if the father was not able to, the pandit ji told me I had to. Then I thought my brother deserves that last respect from my end. What he has done, I will never be able to match up," Vishal Batra said, looking at the first peak that Vishal Batra and the soldiers he led captured, 'Point 5140'.

This particular area in Kargil is now called Batra Top in honour of Captain Vikram Batra. "Yeh dil mange more" was his victory warcry. The 2021 Bollywood film 'Shershah' was based on Captain Vikram Batra's life.

After Point 5140 was captured, the 13 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles was tasked to capture Point 4875. On July 7, 1999 Captain Vikram Batra and his company were tasked to clear enemy defences from a narrow feature with sharp cuttings on both the sides leading up to Point 4875 and a ledge.

He led the assault from the front and engaged the enemy in a physical fight. He killed five enemy soldiers at point blank range despite his own injuries. He moved towards the next enemy fortification and threw grenades to clear the position.

"His dauntless determination inspired his men to clear the enemy from a dominating position. Later, he succumbed to his injuries. His fearless determination and leadership encouraged his company men to avenge his death and finally capture Point 4875," the Defence Ministry says on its website.

When 80% Andhra MLAs Stood Up In Response To This Question By CB Naidu

The Andhra Pradesh Assembly witnessed some lighter moments on Thursday as almost 80 per cent of the MLAs responded when Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu wanted all those who were booked during the previous government of YSR Congress Party to stand up.

Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, Human Resources Development Minister Nara Lokesh and several other ministers were among those who stood up.

One of the women MLAs heard saying she had seven cases booked against her.

"Cases were booked against all those who were fighting politically. He (former Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy) did not want to see any of them out (of jail) but people sent all of them directly to the Assembly," Naidu said in the Assembly while presenting a White Paper on the law and order situation during the YSRCP rule.

Mr Naidu vowed to place Andhra Pradesh in the first position in the country in terms of the best law and order situation. He said all the politically motivated cases would be reviewed. The Chief Minister said the government was also ready to punish all those officials who registered illegal cases.

He said except the Babli case, he never had any other case against him but after the YSRCP came to power, 17 cases were booked against him while seven cases were booked against Pawan Kalyan.

Mr Naidu mentioned that about 60 cases were booked against TDP leader J. C. Prabhakar Reddy. Cases under the SC/ST Atrocities Act were registered against present Home Minister Anitha Vangalapudi and Speaker Ayyanna Patrudu. Then MP Raghurama Krishna Raju was tortured in lock-up, he said and alleged that then Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy drew sadistic pleasure by watching the video of the torture.

He alleged that under the YSRCP rule, people suffered physical and mental trauma. "YSRCP leaders with the police attacked the very roots of democracy," he said and recalled that the Legislative Council Chairman was not allowed to function when a bill for creating three state capitals was tabled.

Mr Naidu agreed to Pawan Kalyan's suggestion that another session be called for a thorough discussion on law and order. He also advised NDA members not to land the government in trouble and made it clear that the government would punish anyone disturbing peace and law and order.

The Chief Minister said law and order can be maintained when officials perform their duties in accordance with the law. He also assured the house that a separate wing would be created in the police department to monitor social media. He warned that those posting content derogatory to women would not be spared.

"Pak Army Officers Touched Nawaz Sharif's Knees...": Son-In-Law's Big Claim

Pakistan's powerful army sent its officers to London in 2022 to convince former prime minister Nawaz Sharif to return to the country to "save" it from destruction under Imran Khan's regime, the ruling PML-N supremo's son-in-law claimed on Wednesday.

Nawaz, 74, had returned from London in October last year after spending four years in self-imposed exile on medical grounds. Upon his arrival, he was acquitted in all the cases he was facing including the Al-Azizia Mills corruption case in which he was serving a seven-year imprisonment before leaving for the UK.

"The Army had gone to London (in 2022) and touched the knees of Nawaz Sharif and requested him to come to Pakistan and save it from the destruction of (former prime minister) Imran Khan," Capt Muhammad Safdar (retd.) while addressing party workers of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). He said when Nawaz returned to become prime minister for the fourth time then the powerful circles (a reference to the powerful military) decided against it.

"To stop him from becoming the premier they ensured that Nawaz lost the election from NA-15 Mansehra," he said and chided the Election Commission of Pakistan for manipulating the result of Nawaz, a three-time former prime minister.

Interestingly, Nawaz had won Lahore's seat in the February 8 general election which Khan's party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf alleged that he had also lost this seat but the ECP declared him successful in the country's worst-ever rigged polls.

Nawaz himself had admitted that he was a candidate to become premier but his party failed to get a simple majority therefore it was decided that his younger brother Shehbaz Sharif should be made the prime minister.

The PTI has alleged that the PML-N had won only six per cent seats of the National Assembly and the military establishment gifted dozens of its winning seats after getting the results changed through ECP to the PML-N so that its puppet setup led by Shehbaz Sharif could come to power and serve its interests.

PML-N sources said that Nawaz had agreed not to contest for the Prime Minister's slot after the military establishment offered him to make his daughter Maryam Nawaz Punjab Chief Minister.

The powerful Army, which has ruled the coup-prone country for more than half of its 75-plus years of existence, has hitherto wielded considerable power in the matters of security and foreign policy.

"Firing Should Scare Salman Khan": Lawrence Bishnoi's Brother Told Shooter

Fire shots in such a manner that it scares Bollywood superstar Salman Khan -- this was the blunt, one-line message given by jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi's younger brother Anmol to one of the gunmen involved in the shooting outside the actor's Mumbai home, police said in a chargesheet filed in the case.

The Mumbai police's crime branch, probing the sensational firing case, earlier this month filed a 1,735-page chargesheet before the special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court.

Conspiracy of firing at the actor's house was hatched with the intention of establishing a stronghold and supremacy in the country's financial capital with the aim of getting pecuniary and other advantages for the Bishnoi gang, according to the chargesheet.

The chargesheet included various investigation papers incorporated in three volumes. One such document is the transcript of an audio chat between Anmol Bishnoi and arrested shooter Vickykumar Gupta.

In one of the conversations, Anmol Bishnoi is heard instructing Gupta to carry out the firing thoughtfully and everywhere, even if it takes more than a minute and should be done in such a manner that it scares 'Bhai' (Salman Khan), the chargesheet said.

Further, he asks Gupta if he smokes. When the latter replies in the affirmative, Anmol Bishnoi tells him to smoke while firing so that he comes across as a fearless individual in CCTV cameras installed in the area, according to the voluminous police document.

"You will create history by doing this job and your name will be there in all newspapers and other media," it said, citing their conversation.

Two motorbike-borne individuals, Gupta and Sagar Pal, had fired multiple shots outside Mr Khan's home in Galaxy Apartment in Bandra on the morning of April 14.

The two, along with three others -- Sonukumar Bishnoi, Mohammad Rafiq Choudhary and Harpal Singh -- are currently in judicial custody in connection with the case.

Lawrence Bishnoi, Anmol and one Rawtaran Bishnoi have been shown as wanted accused in the chargesheet.

Body Camera Footage Shows US Police Shooting Dead Unarmed Black Woman

New body camera footage released by the Illinois State Police shows officers shooting dead an unarmed Black woman in her home after she called for help over a possible intruder.

In the United States, where police shootings of minorities have become painfully common and polarizing events, the killing has attracted national attention, with President Joe Biden saying Sonya Massey "should be alive today."

So far one of the police officers involved in this case has been charged with murder.

Massey, 36, called 911 to report a possible intruder at her home, with police arriving after midnight July 6, according to the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office.

In video footage released Monday, Massey is seen talking to two officers in her home, while they ask for ID and she searches through paperwork.

The sheriff's deputies then ask her to check on a pot of boiling water on her stove, saying "we don't need a fire while we're here."

When one of the deputies steps back, Massey asks why, and he responds with a laugh: "away from your hot steaming water."

Holding the pot, Massey calmly responds "Oh, I rebuke you in the name of Jesus" -- prompting a deputy to respond "You better fucking not. I swear to God I'll fucking shoot you at your fucking face," drawing his weapon.

Apologizing, Massey crouches behind a counter as officers scream "drop the fucking pot." They then round the corner of the counter and open fire.

Afterward, one of the officers said they were afraid of "taking fucking boiling water to the fucking head."

Officer Sean Grayson, who is white, has been charged with murder.

Biden on Monday called Massey "a beloved mother, friend, daughter, and young Black woman."

"When we call for help, all of us as Americans -- regardless of who we are or where we live -- should be able to do so without fearing for our lives," he said in a statement.

High-profile civil rights attorney Ben Crump, representing the family of Massey, called it "one of the worst videos of a police shooting ever."

Police shootings and brutality -- especially instances of white on Black violence in a country with a long history of discrimination -- often attract outrage and protests in the United States, as well as defenses and pushback from ardent police supporters.

America's decentralized policing system, where individual towns and counties are responsible for their own policing, means there are no national training requirements and this makes reform extremely difficult.

Adding to complications, the United States is home to more guns than people, meaning police often train for violent encounters with the general public.

Unhappy With Budget 2024, Congress Chief Ministers To Skip NITI Aayog Meet

Calling the Union Budget 2024-25 "discriminatory" and "dangerous", the Congress on Tuesday evening announced that the party's Chief Ministers -- Siddaramaiah (Karnataka), Revanth Reddy (Telangana), and Sukhvinder Sukhu (Himachal Pradesh) -- will not attend the Niti Aayog Governing Council meeting scheduled in the national capital on July 27.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK chief MK Stalin too has said that he would boycott the NITI Aayog meeting to be chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 27 as a mark of protest.

"The Union Budget presented today was extremely discriminatory and dangerous, which completely goes against the principles of federalism and fairness that the Union government must follow. In protest, INC CMs will be boycotting the NITI Aayog meeting scheduled for 27th July," Congress General Secretary (Organisation), KC Venugopal said in a post on X.

"This government's attitude is completely antithetical to Constitutional principles. We will not participate in an event that is solely designed to hide the true, discriminatory colours of this regime," he added.

Earlier in the day, Finance Minister Niramala Sitharaman announced a slew of measures during her 80-minute Budget speech, including a hike in standard deduction in the new tax regime from Rs 50,000 to Rs 75,000, revisions to tax slabs in the new regime, cut in Customs duty on gold and silver, three schemes under employment-linked incentives, and Rs 2 lakh crore for job creation, among others.

However, the Congress took a jibe at the Centre soon after the announcements, calling them nothing but a "Sarkar Bachao" Budget driven by the political compulsions for the survival of this "lame duck" government.

Taking to X, Mr Venugopal said, "The Budget will do nothing to address inflation or solve the farmers' crisis. It has absolutely nothing for the middle classes. Much like the 10 (previous) Budgets, this Union Budget is also far removed from the concerns of the ordinary Indian."

"While the government has belatedly recognised that job creation is the need of the hour, its so-called announcements are totally insincere and non-serious. They could not even properly copy from our Nyay Patra."

According to Mr Venugopal, merely throwing large headline numbers while giving pittances in reality is nothing but a cruel joke on the future of India's youth.

"Every segment of the Indian society is going to be in an even worse situation after this Budget, and this government that is completely cut off from the pain of the people will simply be concerned about its survival," he said.

Gambhir Breaks Silence On Reports Of BCCI Rejecting Support Staff Request

New India head coach Gautam Gambhir has firmly denied reports and rumours that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) rejected his requests for coaching staff personnel. Instead, Gambhir expressed that his requests to the BCCI were largely accepted. Gambhir also announced the names of two people who are set to join his support staff - Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate. Gambhir's first series as India head coach begins on Saturday, July 27, as India tours Sri Lanka for 3 T20Is and 3 ODIs.

Appearing at a press conference for the first time since being appointed as Team India head coach, Gambhir refuted claims that the BCCI had not agreed to his requests.

"Really happy with the BCCI. They have agreed to most of the things I've asked for. I was surprised to read all those news (about BCCI rejecting his demands)," said Gambhir in the press-conference.

"The crux of the support staff will remain the same," he confirmed. Gambhir stated that T Dilip, the fielding coach during Rahul Dravid's tenure, will continue in his role.

"Abhishek Nayar as assistant coach, Ryan ten Doeschate as assistant coach," confirmed Gambhir. "I feel there could be assistant coaches working and focusing on all three departments rather than one specific department. That's the reason we now have two assistant coaches. That's the way we will go forward as well," added Gambhir.

Nayar and ten Doeschate are two men Gambhir worked in close quarters with during IPL 2024, as Kolkata Knight Riders won a third IPL title. Nayar was the assistant coach of KKR, while ten Doeschate was their fielding coach.

Gambhir confirmed that Nayar, T Dilip and former India leg-spinner Sairaj Bahutule are travelling with the India squad to Sri Lanka, while ten Doeschate will join the team directly in Colombo.

Gambhir stated that the entire support staff will be finalised after the Sri Lanka tour.

"We still have one month after the Sri Lanka tour, and we can finalise after the tour. Importantly, I've worked with Ryan and Abhishek closely during the IPL. I enjoyed working with them, they are thorough professionals, and there can't be a bigger and better opportunity now," said Gambhir.

South African pacer Morne Morkel has been reported to be requested by Gambhir to also join the coaching staff.

Joe Biden Quits Presidential Race. Will Kamala Harris Take On Trump Now?

The Democratic party will be taking a historic gamble if it turns to Vice President Kamala Harris to become its presidential candidate, betting that a Black woman can overcome racism, sexism and her own missteps as a politician to defeat Republican Donald Trump.

In more than two centuries of democracy, American voters have elected only one Black president and never a woman, a record that makes even some Black voters wonder if Harris can crash through the hardest ceiling in US politics.

"Will her race and gender be an issue? Absolutely," said LaTosha Brown, a political strategist and co-founder of the Black Lives Matter Fund.

Harris would face other big challenges: if promoted to the top of the ticket, she would have barely three months to campaign and unite the party and donors behind her.

Yet many Democrats are excited about her chances.

Some three dozen Democratic lawmakers have voiced fears that President Joe Biden, 81, will lose an election that the party has cast as a battle for the future of US democracy because he lacks the mental and physical stamina to win and serve four more years.

Many fear Trump and the Republicans could not only take the White House, but both houses of Congress.

Biden ended his reelection campaign on Sunday. He said, in a post on X, he will remain in his role as president and commander-in-chief until his term ends in January 2025 and will address the nation this week.

Harris, 59, is two decades younger than Trump and a leader in the party on abortion rights, an issue which resonates with younger voters and Democrats' progressive base. Proponents argue she would energize those voters, consolidate Black support, and bring sharp debating skills to prosecute the political case against the former president.

Her candidacy would offer a contrast with Trump and his vice presidential running mate, Senator J.D. Vance, the two white men on the Republican ticket, Brown said.

"That to me is reflective of America's past. She is reflective of America's now and future," Brown said.

But despite earning praise in the last few weeks for her strong defense of Biden, some Democrats remain concerned about Harris' shaky first two years in office, short-lived campaign for the 2020 Democratic nomination, and - perhaps most of all - the weight of a long history of racial and gender discrimination in the United States.

In a hypothetical head-to-head matchup, Harris and Trump were tied with 44% support each in a July 15-16 Reuters/Ipsos poll, conducted immediately after the assassination attempt against Trump. Trump led Biden 43% to 41% in that same poll, though the 2 percentage point difference was within the poll's 3 percentage point margin of error.

Harris's approval ratings, while low, are a tick higher than Biden's. According to polling outfit Five Thirty Eight, 38.6 percent of Americans approve of Harris while 50.4 percent disapprove. Biden has 38.5 percent approval and 56.2 percent disapproval.

'NO SAFE OPTION'

"If you think that there is consensus among the people who want Joe Biden to leave that they will support Kamala - Vice President Harris - you would be mistaken," Representative Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, a Biden supporter, said on Instagram. "There's no safe option."

The United States elected Barack Obama, the first and only Black president in 2008. The only woman to head a presidential ticket of a major party, Hillary Clinton, lost to Trump in 2016.

Supporters of Harris, the first woman and first Black and South Asian person to serve as vice president, argue she has already weathered unfair attacks related to her race and gender and is prepared for more.

"America has a history of racism, sexism, so I'm sure that will factor into this conversation, factor into her campaign," said Jamal Simmons, a former Harris aide.

But he said there is a flip side: Black voters could be galvanized if Harris is put at the top of the ticket, and women, including some who regret not voting for Clinton in 2016, would back her as well.

"It's also true that she will benefit from her race and her gender, that many African Americans may rally to her candidacy," he said.

Harris benefits from greater name recognition than the other Democratic leaders who have been floated as potential presidential candidates, he said. California Governor Gavin Newsom and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer are among those talked about in Democratic circles as possible replacements.

"While she has flaws and faults like everyone, we know those flaws and faults, so you can build a campaign with clarity. Any other candidates are complete unknowns," Simmons said.

One former Democratic lawmaker, speaking on condition of anonymity, said he thought Harris was a bigger risk because of her record than her race.

Harris was plagued by staff turnover at the beginning of her vice presidency and showed little progress on her portfolios of protecting voting rights and stemming migration from Central America.

"I think the race thing is just a compounding factor or an exacerbating factor," the former lawmaker said. "Any of it's going to be a gamble, but I like the odds with another candidate, even if that means Kamala at the top of the ticket."

'PATRIARCHY IS A HELL OF A DRUG'

Trump has used racist and sexist language, explicitly and in code. In 2020 he said he had "heard" Harris, a US citizen born in California, did not qualify to be a candidate for vice president.

At a rally in Michigan on Saturday, Trump piled on Harris for the way she laughs.

"I call her Laughing Kamala," Trump said. "You ever watch her laugh? She's crazy."

Trump's campaign said Democrats were deploying "classic disinformation" about his language and noted Harris's dispute with Biden in a 2019 debate about school busing and her criticism of Biden for working with segregationists in the Senate.

"In contrast, President Trump is polling at record-high levels with African Americans," Trump campaign senior adviser Jason Miller said in a statement.

Trump made false "birtherism" claims against Obama, who was born in Hawaii. Those falsehoods gained traction among far-right activists and his nationalist base, prompting an exasperated Obama, blasting "carnival barkers," to release a longer version of his birth certificate from the White House.

Polling at the time showed a quarter of all Americans - and 45 percent of Republicans - believed Obama had not been born in the country.

"You've got birtherism 2.0," said Cliff Albright, co-founder and CEO of Black Voters Matter Fund, an Atlanta-based non-profit, referring to Harris.

Nadia Brown, director of the women's and gender studies program at Georgetown University, said despite the rise of Black political leaders, there remains a notable reluctance to accept women in key leadership roles.

"Patriarchy is a hell of a drug," Brown said. "With racism, we know it, we can call it out. The mood that we're not seeing as articulately expressed is a real reticence to have a Black woman in particular as a leader."

Harris's standing in the party has improved with her aggressive advocacy for reproductive rights after the Supreme Court in 2022 struck down Roe v Wade, which protected women's right to abortion.

Biden credited her with helping to prevent a "red wave" of Republican victories in that year's midterm elections, and Harris has crisscrossed the country as a top campaign spokesperson on abortion rights.

Harris could also inherit Biden's strong support among Black voters, who helped propel him to the 2020 Democratic nomination.

But Black women have not entirely given up on Biden.

Donna Brazile, a political strategist and former chair of the Democratic National Committee, said on Friday she had joined 1,400 Black women in a letter of support for a Biden-Harris ticket and in condemnation of disunity within the party.

And if the party ends up coalescing around Harris, she could receive some of the blame from voters who say Democratic leaders covered up his frailties.

"I'm kind of done with the Democrats. So many knew about Biden's condition and hid it. Kamala was part of that," said Gina Gannon, 65, a retiree in the battleground state of Georgia, who voted for Trump in 2016 and Biden in 2020.

Doctors Remove 77 Needles From 19-Year-Old Woman's Head In Odisha

A day after doctors at Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Odisha's Burla removed 70 needles from the skull of a sorcery victim, neurosurgeons retrieved another seven during a follow-up surgery on Saturday.

Director Bhabagrahi Rath said, "So far, 77 needles have been retrieved from the woman's head in two surgeries. Fortunately, the needles have not caused any bone injuries, but there are soft tissue injuries on her head." The patient is under observation and will be checked for other issues for which she visited the sorcerer, Rath added.

He noted it is premature to assume the problems were psychological and emphasised the need for thorough diagnosis.

The woman, referred from Bolangir to VIMSAR due to pain and infection risk, is out of danger but will remain under post-operative care for about a week.

On Thursday, Reshma Behera (19) of Ichgaon under Sindhikela police limits in Bolangir was admitted to Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital with severe headache, leading to a CT scan revealing multiple needles in her head.

Despite initial removal of eight needles, her condition did not improve, prompting her referral to VIMSAR, where 70 more needles were removed.

Reshma, frequently ill since her mother's death four years ago, sought help from a sorcerer in 2021. The family discovered the needles' presence recently when Reshma complained of pain.

The fraud doctor has been arrested, and Kantabanji police are investigating if there were other victims subjected to needle piercing by the accused.

With Shadow Cabinet, Naveen Patnaik Makes His Intentions Clear

Former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who is now the state's Leader of Opposition, has drawn up a shadow cabinet to scrutinise and take on the ruling BJP and its Chief Minister Mohan Majhi. The move comes ahead of the budget session of the state assembly, which is set to begin from next Monday.

The 50-member UK-style shadow cabinet reflects the early experiences of Mr Patnaik who spent a large part of his pre-politics life in the UK.

The members of the shadow cabinet are mostly former ministers of his government, who are expected to keep tabs on each minister and his department and prepare alternative plans and policies in areas the government could slip up.

"The Opposition party is the custodian of people's interests. The Opposition party has a significant role to play in the state Assembly.

The MLAs will keep close watch on the activities of departments assigned to them and actively take part during discussion of those departments in the state Assembly. They will work to protect the interests of the people," a statement issued by the BJD on Wednesday quoted Mr Patnaik as saying.

The former Chief Minister's move not only underscores the active role he plans to play from the Opposition benches, it also brushes off the notion that many had -- that the Biju Janata Dal will now be politically irrelevant.

The BJD found itself out of power in the recently concluded election after 24 years. The BJP unseated the government of Naveen Patnaik winning 78 of the 147 assembly seats. The BJD won 51 seats.

Days later, as Mr Patnaik was elected the Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly, the BJD signalled that it means business.

The party, which was the BJP's friend in Rajya Sabha, said its MPs would not be confined to speaking on issues only, but would hold agitation if the BJP-led government at the Centre "ignores Odisha's interest".

The party has already ranged itself alongside the Opposition on the NEET issue and even held walkouts in parliament.

After 365 Years, Chhatrapati Shivaji's "Bagh Nakh" Back In India

The tiger claw that Maratha emperor Chhatrapati Shivaji is believed to have used to kill General Afzal Khan is back in Maharashtra after more than 350 years. The state government has brought it on loan from London's Albert Museum for three years and put it on display at the Satara in western Maharashtra.

The weapon brought from London has a bulletproof cover and security was strengthened for it. It will be kept at a museum in Satara for the next seven months.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, his Deputy Devendra Fadnavis and other leaders attended the function to inaugurate it.

History says in 1649, Shivaji -- who established Maratha empire after a successful rebellion against the Bijapur Sultanate -- had to parley with Bijapur general Afzal Khan.

For the unarmed meeting, he secretly wore a chain-mail shirt under his clothing and concealed a bagh nakh in his right hand. When the two leaders met and formally embraced,  Shivaji killed Afzal Khan with the bagh nakh. The event took place at the foot of Pratapgarh fort, which is in present-day Satara.

The loan of the legendary weapon comes ahead of the assembly election in Maharashtra, and is expected to be a talking point in favour of the ruling alliance.

Shivaji has been a Maratha icon revered especially by the undivided Sena and the loan of the Bagh Nakh is expected to strengthen the credentials of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who is still hoping to be seen as carrying the political legacy of the late Balasaheb Thackeray – Uddhav Thackeray's father and the founder of Shiv Sena.

The assembly election due by the end of this year has been a matter of concern for the ruling alliance, which has been outperformed in the state by the Maha Vikas Aghadi.

In 2019, the BJP - allied with the undivided Sena led by Uddhav Thackeray - won 23 of 25 Lok Sabha seats it contested in Maharashtra. The Shiv Sena contested the other 23 and won 18.

This time, the BJP won just nine seats. Its allies -- the splinter units of the Sena led by Eknath Shinde and NCP led by Ajit Pawar -- won eight of the 19 seats they fought.

On the other side, the Congress won 13 seats, the Sena faction led by Uddhav Thackeray won nine seats and the faction of NCP led by Sharad Pawar won 8 seats.

No President Nod To Replacing Governor As Punjab Universities' Chancellor

A Punjab bill that seeks to replace the state Governor with the Chief Minister as the Chancellor of state-run universities has been returned by the President without assent, official sources said.

Punjab Universities Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2023, and three other bills were passed by the Punjab Assembly in the two-day session in June last year but the governor had called the session "patently illegal." Later in November last year, the Supreme Court held that the June 19-20 session was constitutionally valid and directed the Punjab governor to decide on the Bills passed by the legislative assembly session.

The Punjab Universities Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2023 was for replacing the Governor with the Chief Minister as the Chancellor of state-run universities.

However, Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit reserved this bill along with two others -- the Sikh Gurdwaras (Amendment) Bill, 2023 and the Punjab Police (Amendment) Bill, 2023 -- for the consideration of the President in accordance with Article 200 of the Constitution of India.

These three bills were later sent to the President.

The Punjab Universities Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2023 was returned by the President without assent a few days back, the sources said.

The governor and Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann had been at loggerheads over various issues including the appointment of vice chancellor of Ludhiana-based Punjab Agricultural University.

Meanwhile, Punjab BJP leader Subhash Sharma on Wednesday hailed the President's decision.

"We have been saying that the CM has been doing unconstitutional work and this development has put a stamp on it. We expect that the CM will now learn a lesson from it and will not indulge in any unconstitutional acts," said Mr Sharma.

The Sikh Gurdwaras (Amendment) Bill, 2023 was aimed at ensuring a free-to-air telecast of 'Gurbani' from the Golden Temple in Amritsar while the Punjab Police (Amendment) Bill, 2023 was to pave the way to bring about an independent mechanism for selection and appointment of suitable persons to the director general of police post.

The Governor had granted assent to the Punjab Affiliated Colleges (Security of Service) Amendment Bill, 2023, which was aimed to streamline the functioning of the Punjab Educational Tribunal for government-aided private colleges.

220-Foot NF 2024 Asteroid Racing Towards Earth, NASA Alerts

NASA is monitoring the trajectory of asteroid NF 2024, a 220-foot (67-meter) space rock hurtling towards Earth at a speed of 45,388 miles per hour (73,055 kilometers per hour).  The asteroid is classified as part of the Apollo group, a collection of near-Earth asteroids that orbit the sun.

According to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the closest approach of NF 2024 is expected to occur today, July 17th, at a distance of approximately 3 million miles (4.8 million kilometers) from Earth. This distance is well beyond the range of concern for any potential impact.

NASA continuously tracks near-Earth objects (NEOs) and maintains a database of their trajectories. Asteroids larger than 150 meters (492 feet) in diameter and closer than 4.6 million miles (7.4 million kilometers) are considered potentially hazardous asteroids (PHAs). NF 2024 is significantly smaller and does not meet the criteria for a PHA.

In addition to NF 2024, NASA reported that four other asteroids will make close approaches to Earth in the coming days. Asteroids BY15, NJ3, and MG1 are all expected to pass by safely at distances ranging from 2.64 million miles to 3.85 million miles (4.25 million kilometers to 6.2 million kilometers).

As part of its ongoing efforts to study and mitigate potential asteroid threats, NASA is developing asteroid deflection technologies. The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission is designed to test the feasibility of using a kinetic impactor spacecraft to alter the course of an asteroid in space.

England Cricketer's House Attacked. Shocking CCTV Footage Emerges - Watch

England cricketer and Hampshire captain James Vince has made a public appeal regarding persistent attacks on his property that resulted in his family being forced to leave his hometown in Southampton. For nearly eight years, Vince and his family enjoyed the tranquility of their home in a village east of Southampton. That peace was shattered earlier this year when Vince's home and vehicles were targeted in two shocking attacks, forcing the family to flee and live in fear. The first attack occurred in the early hours of April 15. Vince, 33, recounted the harrowing experience: “My wife and I woke suddenly to a load of smashing and alarms going off. We had no idea what was going on and it was obviously very unnerving, so we rushed straight to get the kids to make sure they were safe. They were very shaken up," Vince told The Telegraph.

By the time the police arrived, the attackers had vanished, leaving behind a trail of destruction. A neighbour reported seeing a car speed away from the scene.

The damage to the cars and home was extensive, prompting the family to move out temporarily while repairs were made. Security cameras and alarms were installed, but the sense of safety had been irrevocably damaged.

Barely a week after returning home, Vince's worst fears were realised when a second attack took place on May 1. This time, he was still awake upstairs. “That meant I was able to get downstairs quite quickly and had more of a sense of what was going on. It wasn't such a surprise either, because it had happened before. I think they saw the activity in the house and left quickly,” he explained.

The attackers used bricks, smashing windows on both the cars and the house once more. Vince detailed how the family had just returned from a benefit dinner for his teammate Chris Wood when the attack happened around midnight.

The incidents have puzzled Vince and authorities alike. Despite extensive investigations by the police, private security personnel, and intelligence firms, no clear motive has emerged. Vince remains convinced the attacks are a case of mistaken identity. “All the experts we've spoken to say it looks like a money issue, unpaid debts, or something,” Vince said. “We have nothing to hide and know we have never been involved in anything like this. We just desperately want this to stop.”

Footage from the new security cameras has provided some clues. It shows a man with a torch passing bricks over a wall to another man, who then throws them at the house and cars. The second man wore a hoodie with a Gym King logo and had his face covered. This, Vince hopes, might be a key piece of information to identify the culprits.

The attacks coincidentally took place on days when Hampshire had home matches, adding another layer of mystery. Despite enhanced security measures, the family remains on edge, fearing a third attack. “We don't want to risk the same thing happening again,” Vince said. “It's not fair for my wife or children to have to go through it again.”

The emotional toll on the family has been immense, especially on Vince's young children. “Something like this is hugely disruptive in our lives, especially for our children, who have understandably been affected and unsettled by the situation. Having said that, I'm amazed and extremely proud of how they have dealt with it. We have received great support locally, and from within cricket,” Vince shared.

The family has now turned to the public for help, hoping someone might recognise the attackers or have information that could solve the mystery. “If anyone knows anything, or sees anything in the footage of the attack that could lead to anything, please contact us or Hampshire Police. It could be the final piece of information we need to find out what is going on and get our lives back to normal,” Vince urged.

Hampshire Police confirmed the incidents, stating: “Two incidents of criminal damage at an address during the early hours of April 15 and May 11. On both occasions, two cars were damaged, and the front room windows smashed.”

Cave Found On Moon, Could Shelter Humans In Future

Scientists have found evidence for an accessible cave conduit beneath the moon's surface. The location of the underground cave is not far from Apollo 11's landing site. It's 250 miles (400 kilometers) from where Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed 55 years ago.

Researchers analysed radar measurements by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, and compared the results with lava tubes on Earth. Their findings appeared in the journal Nature Astronomy.

The finding suggests that the cave is a "promising site for a lunar base" as it offers shelter from the harsh surface environment and could support long-term human exploration of the Moon.

The cave is accessible from the deepest known pit on the moon. It's located at the Mare Tranquillitatis (Sea of Tranquility)

The pit, like the more than 200 others discovered up there, was created by the collapse of a lava tube.

NASA is aiming to build a semi-permanent crewed base on the moon, China and Russia have also announced interest in creating lunar research outposts. But, a permanent lunar base can only be set up in environments protected from cosmic radiation and with stable temperatures.

Such caves could form an emergency lunar shelter because the astronauts would be naturally shielded from harmful cosmic rays, solar radiation and micrometeorites.

Lunar orbiters first spotted pits on the moon more than a decade ago. Many are thought to be "skylights" that connect to underground caves such as lava tubes, giant underground tunnels that form through volcanic processes, reported The Guardian.

"Bullet Flew By His Ear": Man Predicted Trump Rally Shooting 4 Months Ago

Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt yesterday evening during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Multiple videos shot by bystanders and video journalists showed what happened before, after and the moment when Mr Trump was shot at. Now, a four-month-old video has resurfaced online that predicted the attack on the former US president.

In a video posted on YouTube on March 14, Bradon Biggs spoke about an alleged divine vision he had about the attempt at Trump's life. Biggs has a YouTube channel where he frequently posts videos on "visions and prophetic warnings".

"I saw an attempt on his (Donald Trump) life. This bullet flew by his ear and it came so close to his head that it busted his eardrum, and I saw he fell to his knees during this timeframe and started worshipping the lord," he said.

The 78-year-old had just begun his speech when shots rang out, hitting his right ear and streaking his face with blood. He dropped to his knees behind the podium. When he emerged about a minute later, he mouthed "Fight! Fight! Fight!" pumping his fist in the air.

Many X users are now posting the clip of Biggs in which he also claim that he saw Trump "winning the presidency".

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has identified 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks as the "subject involved" in the attempted assassination.

One rally attendee was killed and two other spectators were injured in the shooting. The suspect was shot dead by a Security Services agent.

The shooting occurred less than four months before the November 5 election, when Trump faces an election rematch with Democratic President Joe Biden. Most opinion polls including those by Reuters/Ipsos show the two locked in a close contest.

It was the first shooting of a US president or major party candidate since the 1981 attempted assassination of Republican President Ronald Reagan.

The incident has raised immediate questions about security failures by the Secret Service, which provides former presidents including Trump with lifetime protection.
