India's Rafales Simulate "Ground Attack Missions" In Significant Exercise

The Indian Air Force is carrying out Exercise Aakraman (Attack) over a large area in the central sector involving its mainstream fighter aircraft fleets led by the Rafale combat aircraft.

The Indian Air Force operates two squadrons of the Rafale aircraft which are based out of Ambala and Hashimara in West Bengal.

"The cutting-edge technology fighter jets are carrying out complex missions involving ground attack and electronic warfare drills," defence sources told ANI.

"The assets of the Indian Air Force have been moved from multiple airbases, including from the eastern side," they added.

The Indian Air Force has been practising for complex ground attack missions for operations in different terrains, including plains and mountainous areas, the sources said.

The Indian Air Force also holds an edge over its adversaries in the south Asian region with the inductions of Meteor air to air missiles and induction of long range high speed low drag missiles like the Rampage and Rocks.

The exercise is taking place at a time when tensions between India and Pakistan have risen after the Pahalgam attack.

The exercise is being closely monitored by the Air Headquarters. Tactical Air Combat and Development Establishment (TACDE) pilots of the Indian Air Force, the best aviators of the air force, are taking part in the exercise. TACDE pilots are often referred to as the 'Top Gun' pilots of the Indian Air Force.

The Indian Air Force was used to carry out the post-Pulwama attack strikes inside Pakistan in February 2019.

The Indian Air Force had used the Mirage 2000 fighter jets in 2019 but has indicted many force multipliers like the S-400 air defence system, which can be the very effective against the airborne early warning and control aircraft of the adversaries.

Gang Sold Babies To Rich Families In Delhi-NCR, Busted; Mastermind On Run

The Delhi Police have busted a human trafficking network that sold newborns to rich families in the national capital and nearby cities.

Three members of the gang were arrested in Delhi's Dwarka, the police said. The gang was active in Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR).

A four-day-old newborn was also rescued, the police said, adding the mastermind of the gang is on the run and police teams are looking for her.

The gang has sold over 30 children to rich families in Delhi-NCR so far, the police said. The gang members often kidnapped children from poor families from the Gujarat and Rajasthan border.

The three arrested people have been identified as Yasmin, Anjali, and Jitendra.

The police said the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) earlier arrested Anjali in another human trafficking case. She returned to the criminal world after coming out on bail, the police said.

During the investigation, the Delhi Police team analysed the call detail records (CDRs) of over 20 suspicious mobile numbers.

"The team worked on classified information for 20 consecutive days after which they arrested the three people in Uttam Nagar on April 8," Dwarka DCP Ankit Chauhan said.

During interrogation, they said they brought newborns from Rajasthan and Gujarat on the instructions of a 40-year-old woman named Saroj, the gang leader, and sold the babies to rich families in Delhi-NCR for Rs 5 to Rs 10 lakh per child.

Saroj allegedly dealt directly with the rich families.

Most of the children were stolen from the tribal community in Pali, an area on Gujarat and Rajasthan border.

Saroj gave the task of stealing children to Yasmeen, after which she used to steal children from the Gujarat-Rajasthan border. After the children reached Saroj, she would tell Anjali the location of the 'delivery'.

Saroj would then collect money directly and everyone would be given their share. Anjali and Yasmeen have previously donated their eggs illegally. The families to whom the children were sold are also being identified, Delhi Police said, adding legal action will be taken against them.

Ignored India Star Slams IPL Fifty After 7 Years. Internet Says "What A Story"

Karun Nair smashed his first IPL half-century in seven years, taking Jasprit Bumrah to the cleaners in the process, as Delhi Capitals (DC) aimed to chase 206 against Mumbai Indians (MI). Brought in as an impact player and playing his first game of the season, Karun slammed his fifty in just 22 balls. He hit two boundaries off Bumrah in the latter's first over, before thrashing him for two sixes and 18 runs in his second. Nair's innings propelled DC to 72 in the powerplay alone.

Nair had been in excellent form for Vidarbha in domestic cricket, and seems to have translated his form into the biggest T20 league in the world.

His incredible knock sent social media into a frenzy.

Delhi Capitals vs Mumbai Indians, IPL 2025: MI post 205/5

Tilak Varma's half century and impactful innings by Surya Kumar Yadav and Naman Dhir powered Mumbai Indian (MI) to post 205/5 in their 20 overs against Delhi Capitals (DC).

Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel won the toss and opted to bowl against the Mumbai Indians in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Sunday.

Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton opened the innings for MI, both the batters counter-attacked DC bowlers, scoring 45/0 in just four overs Ryan Rickelton 27 (15) and Rohit Sharma 17 (9). Vipraj Nigam removed Rohit Sharma in the 5th over for 18 (12), Rohit's dry IPL season continues, and Surya Kumar Yadav joined Ryan Rickelton in the middle.

SKY started off his innings in style hitting the first ball for a six over fine leg. The Veteran spinner Kuldeep Yadav cleaned up Ryan Rickelton in the 8th over for 41 (25), including five fours and two sixes. Tilak Varma joined Surya in the middle.

Surya and Tilak took their time in the middle and rotated the strike at regular intervals, because of a good power-play MI batters played risk-free cricket in the middle overs.

Tilak and Surya took on Mohit Sharma in his first over hitting him for 14 runs, followed by a six on the first ball of the next over by Surya. The duo added 50 runs in 29 balls Surya being the aggressor. Both the batters made 17 runs in Vipraj's 3rd over, where a catch of Tilak Varma also went down at deep mid-wicket by Tristan Stubbs.

Kuldeep Yadav showed his experience by removing Surya Kumar Yadav in the 14th over for 40 (28), his innings included five fours and two sixes. MI skipper Hardik Pandya joined Tilak in the middle.

Vipraj Nigam took another dream wicket as he removed Hardik Pandya in his last over for 2 (4), MI has been struggling to make partnerships throughout this IPL season. Naman Dhir joined Tilak. After 15 overs MI posted 146/4 Tilak Varma 38* (19) and Naman Dhir 1 (2).

Tilak Varma brought up his second fifty on the trot in the 17th over, he took 26 balls to reach the feat. DC showed brilliance on the field Axar Patel saved a six in the 18th over at long-on.

"Don't Play Victim": UK-Based Gangster Says He Gave Hit Order On Delhi Man

A gangster living in London has taken responsibility for the killing of a 52-year-old property dealer in Delhi. Rajkumar Dalal was driving his Toyota Fortuner when two cars approached from the side and opened fire at outer Delhi's Paschim Vihar (East) on Friday.

The police's suspicion of a gang war behind the killing came true when the London-based gangster, Kapil Sangwan alias Nandu, in a post on Facebook said he gave the hit order on the property dealer because he was doing the bidding of Manjeet Mahal, a Delhi-based gangster.

"I got the murder done. He used to occupy a plot for my enemy Manjeet Mahal. When out on parole, I met Manjeet Mahal and told him that whoever supports him would become my enemy," Nandu said in the post written in Hindi.

"Don't play this victim card. You started it. I am going to finish it," Nandu said.

Nandu, who is hiding in London, faces an Interpol Red Corner Notice (RCN). Interpol issues an RCN at the request of a member country to seek the location and arrest of wanted people globally.

A police officer said the case is likely to be transferred to the Delhi Police's Crime Branch.

The killers fired some 15 rounds at the property dealer. It is suspected they scanned the area and observed the target before striking.

Rajkumar Dalal was going from Paschim Vihar to his gym in Punjabi Bagh when the attack happened.

"We are checking CCTV camera footage from the crime scene to identify the attackers. A case has been registered and multiple teams have been formed to crack the case," a police officer said.

The property dealer is survived by his wife Sujata, and their son, who is a doctor. Police sources said Rajkumar Dalal's family were not aware of any enmity that he may have had.

Watch: Shreyas Iyer Left Fuming At Punjab Kings Teammate Over DRS Call vs SRH

Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer was left fuming during their IPL 2025 clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). PBKS' Glenn Maxwell thought he had dismissed Travis Head caught behind by wicket-keeper Prabhsimran Singh. However, upon seeing the umpire giving it not out, signalled for a DRS review straight away. Moments later, though, Shreyas Iyer was shown to be angry at one of his teammates. Iyer pointed at himself, with his teammates vying for a review. Eventually, Iyer decided to go up with a DRS review upon Maxwell's insistance.

As it turned out, Travis Head remained not out after the whole saga. NDTV could not verify which teammate Iyer seemed to be frustrated on. While what Iyer said was not audible, It was quite apparent that he said: "Pehle merese puch na (Ask me first)"

Watch: Shreyas Iyer angry after DRS saga

Earlierm Punjab Kings unleashed an all-out assault against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Match 27 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, riding on a blazing half-century from Shreyas Iyer (82) and late fireworks from Marcus Stoinis, who scored 34 in eleven deliveries to reach 245/6 in 20 overs, here at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

While the innings had contributions across the board, it was Iyer's calculated aggression that stood out, giving PBKS the perfect launchpad for a mammoth total.

Stoinis finally announced his arrival in IPL 2025 with a sensational finish, smashing four consecutive sixes to close out Punjab Kings' innings in stunning fashion. The Australian all-rounder, who had struggled to make an impact with the bat so far this season, turned on the heat in the final over, propelling PBKS to a commanding total of 245.

Unfortunately for Mohammed Shami, it was a night to forget as the seasoned pacer bore the brunt of Stoinis' onslaught. Shami's final over went for 27 runs, capping off a rough spell that read 4-0-75-0 — second most expensive in IPL history.

After electing to bat, PBKS came out swinging from the very first over. Prabhsimran Singh set the tone with a flurry of boundaries off Mohammed Shami, charging at the veteran seamer and carving him through mid-off and cover with disdain. He was in no mood to show respect and gave PBKS a flying start.

Harshal Patel bowled a game-changing over in the 18th, conceding just five runs and removing both Shreyas Iyer and Maxwell in quick succession. Iyer's 82 off 36 had anchored PBKS' innings but his departure meant PBKS had to rebuild in the final overs and Stoinis did it perfectly.

Putin Labels Russia's 1st Foreign Minister As "Foreign Agent", His Response

Russia has designated its first post-Soviet era foreign minister Andrei Kozyrev as a "foreign agent" over his views on President Putin and his fierce criticism of Moscow over the Russia-Ukraine war. The announcement was made by Russia's Ministry of Justice, which accused Mr Kozyrev of spreading fake news about the country.

Andrei Kozyrev had served as foreign minister under Boris Yeltsen - Russia's first primer minister after the collapse of the Soviet Union (USSR) in 1991. At the time Russia was under severe economic stress, and in order to liberalize the economy, had to maintain close and friendly ties with the West - US and its allies in Europe).

Years later, when Vladimir Putin became President, Mr Kozyrev, who by then had demitted office, opposed much of Putin's policies. For more than a decade, the disgruntled former diplomat stayed in Moscow, but in 2010, decided to move permanently to the United States, who welcomed him.

Since his departure from Moscow, Mr Kozyrev turned into an outspoken and staunch critic of Vladimir Putin, often voicing his unwavering disapproval of his policies. From the very beginning of the Russia-Ukraine war, Mr Kozyrev slammed Russia's military campaign in Ukraine.

In the first few weeks of the war, Mr Kozyrev contacted his former colleagues in the Russian foreign ministry to resign in protest. Over the months and years, he built a campaign against the Russian government and continued to actively criticize Moscow's offensive.

Russia's current foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, used to be Mr Kuzyrev's deputy when the latter was foreign minister of Russia between 1990 and 1996. After the war in Ukraine broke out in 2022, Mr Kuzyrev had written, "There was a time when Lavrov used to have my back. Today, I would watch my back if he was behind me."

On Friday, Russia's Justice Ministry released a statement accusing its former foreign minister of distributing "false information" about the Russian government and its policies, as well as the Russian military. It noted Mr Kozyrev's persistent opposition towards the Kremlin and for Moscow's "special military operation" in Ukraine.

Labeling him a "foreign agent", the statement accused the former top diplomat of cooperating "with foreign platforms" to build an anti-Russia narrative in the United States and beyond, but did not specify the details of this claim.

Russia's "foreign agent" designation carries a negative Soviet-era connotation and makes it mandatory for people to identify themselves as a 'foreign agent' on all social media platforms as well as publications, both offline and online. It also makes it compulsory for them to declare their financial transactions and its trails within Russia.

In response to the Russian government's move to label him "foreign agent", Mr Kozyrev mocked the decision, saying it reflected Kremlin's mindset, which highlights "the stupidity of the regime".

"I am glad to join all those noble people who have likewise been designated foreign agents by Russia," he said.

"Big Step In Justice For 26/11 Victims": S Jaishankar On Tahawwur Rana Extradition

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar responded to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio's comments on the extradition of 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks mastermind Tahawwur Hussain Rana, calling the development "a big step" in giving justice to victims and their families.

Rana, a 64-year-old Pakistan-born Canadian national, had been in judicial custody in the US before the proceedings under the India-US Extradition Treaty began to send him to India.

"Appreciate the counter-terrorism cooperation between our two countries. This is indeed a big step in ensuring justice for the victims of 26/11 attacks," Mr Jaishankar said in a post on X.

Earlier today, Mr Rubio acknowledged India's determined efforts to seek justice for those who were killed in the 26/11 terror attacks.

"We extradited Tahawwur Hussain Rana to India to face charges for his role in planning the horrific 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks. Together, with India, we've long sought justice for the 166 people, including 6 Americans, who lost their lives in these attacks. I'm glad that day has come," Mr Rubio said in a post on X.

The extradition came through after Rana exhausted all legal options against his extradition. Indian intelligence agencies worked closely with the US authorities to take the matter to its successful conclusion after years of sustained and concerted efforts to bring the key conspirator behind the 2008 terror attacks to justice.

Mr Rubio and Mr Jaishankar also spoke over phone on April 7, affirming the strength of the India-US strategic partnership and discussing opportunities to deepen collaboration in the Indo-Pacific region.

Soon after Rana's landed in Delhi, US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said Washington extradited Rana to India "to face justice for his role in planning the horrific 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks."

"The United States has long supported India's efforts to ensure those responsible for these attacks are brought to justice, and as President Trump has said, the United States and India will continue to work together to combat the global scourge of terrorism," the spokesperson told reporters on Friday.

The US Department of Justice also issued a statement, highlighting that Rana - a convicted terrorist - is charged in India with numerous offences.

The US said the 2008 Mumbai attacks "were among the most horrific and catastrophic in India's history".

"No Excuses For This": Ravi Shastri Rips Into CSK Crawl To 103/9 vs KKR

Kolkata Knight Riders produced an inspired bowling effort to restrict Chennai Super Kings to a lowly 103 for 9 in an Indian Premier League match here on Friday. Sent into bat, CSK never really got going as they lost wickets at regular intervals to be limited to their lowest total at home. Shivam Dube ( 31 not out), Vijay Shankar (29) and Rahul Tripathi (16) were the main run getters for CSK.

"No excuses for this," Ravi Shastri was blunt in his analysis while doing commentary for Star Sports.

Sunil Narine didn't concede a single boundary in his miserly spell of 3-13 as a clinical performance of Kolkata Knight Riders' bowlers helped them restrict a listless Chennai Super Kings to a below-par 103/9, their lowest total at their home venue MA Chidambaram Stadium, here on Friday.

On a black-soil pitch, spin dictated terms from the word go, Narine, Varun Chakaravarthy and Moeen Ali, brought to counter left-handed batters, picked six wickets collectively as CSK's batting never got going.

CSK wanted to bat first after losing the toss, but didn't take full advantage of their decision as they could never break free from the disciplined bowling by KKR bowlers. It took Shivam Dube's unbeaten 29-ball 31 to save CSK from being all out for their lowest total (79) in IPL's history.

Devon Conway began by taking two boundaries off pacer Vaibhav Arora, before being dismissed for 12 when his attempt to reverse-sweep off Moeen resulted in him being trapped lbw in a wicket-maiden over. In the next over, CSK were dealt another blow when Rachin Ravindra miscued a slog off Harshit Rana and was caught at cover.

KKR could have got another wicket if Vijay Shankar wasn't dropped by Moeen at mid-off when on zero. From there, Shankar pulled and lofted Chakaravarthy for boundaries, before hoicking Moeen over mid-wicket for six. Shankar's charmed life continued when Venkatesh Iyer dropped him at mid-wicket on 20.

Student Dies By Suicide, Cops Find "I Quit" Written On Mirror With Lipstick

A 23-year-old law student died by suicide in Uttar Pradesh's Jhansi over a failed affair, the police said.

Danish Ara was pursuing LLB. Her family said she met Asad 4-5 months ago during treatment, and both eventually became close to each other. The family said he promised to marry her, but chose another woman.

Trump Warns Of 'Transition Cost' From Tariffs, Says "In The End..."

US President Donald Trump on Thursday warned of the "transition cost" from his tariff policies, as Wall Street stocks fell again over the worsening trade war with China.

"There will be a transition cost, and transition problems, but in the end, it's going to be a beautiful thing," Trump said as he seeks to reorder the world economy by forcing manufacturers to base themselves in the United States.

China Sends Proposal To Australia Amid Bitter Fight With US, Gets Rejected

Australia has declined China's proposal to form an alliance against the United States' tariffs, imposed by President Donald Trump's administration. The decision comes as Washington escalates its trade war with Beijing, imposing a 10 per cent import tax on Australian goods and significantly higher tariffs on Chinese products - 125 per cent.

China's ambassador to Australia, Xiao Qian, suggested that joint resistance is the only way to counter the US' "hegemonic and bullying behavior." He also said, "The international community... should firmly say no to unilateralism and protectionism."

However, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that his country will prioritise its national interests, "speak for ourselves" and not align with China's stance.

Defence Minister Richard Marles emphasised that Australia will not be "holding China's hand" and instead focus on diversifying its trade relationships.

“We're not about to make common cause with China, that's not what's going to happen here. I don't think we'll be holding China's hand,” Marles told Australia's Nine News. “We don't want to see a trade war between America and China, to be clear, but our focus is on actually diversifying our trade," he added.

Australia has expressed frustration over the tariffs but has opted not to retaliate. Instead, the country is seeking further negotiations with the White House. Xiao Qian argued that the US has "weaponised" trade issues, potentially sabotaging the international order and dragging the global economy into chaos. He emphasised the need for Australia and China to cooperate in safeguarding a fair and free trading environment.

Australia is actively exploring alternative export opportunities outside the US. The country aims to reduce its reliance on China and bolster economic resilience by diversifying trade with nations like Indonesia, India, the UK, and the UAE. "Eighty percent of trade does not involve the United States. There are opportunities for Australia and we intend to seize them", Albanese said. Australian Trade Minister Don Farrell has recently met with counterparts from Japan, Singapore, South Korea, and India.

Why Millionaires Are Fleeing London - What The Latest Data Reveals

Millionaires are fleeing London - not by handfuls or dozens, but by the thousands. In 2024 alone, more than 11,000 millionaires fled London for greener pastures. Most of them settled either in Asia or America. Though this has been happening for a few years now, what is worrisome is that the frequency and scale of the exits have risen exponentially.

Data collected annually by wealth advisory firms suggest that some of the more prominent reasons behind the exodus are ever-increasing taxes, failure to fully recover from the 2008 financial crisis, and Brexit - Britain's decision to separate itself from rest of Europe.

'LONDON IS FALLING'

London was once home to the world's highest number of dollar millionaires, but since 2014, the city faced a sharp decline. In the last decade alone, London has lost 12 per cent of its wealthiest residents. London has now dropped out of the 'top 5 wealthiest' list.

According to the World's wealthiest Cities Report, which is published by advisory firm Henley and Partners, more than 11,300 millionaires have abandoned London between January and December last year. A data intelligence firm New World Wealth seconds that finding.

But the situation isn't dire yet for The Square Mile, as the British capital is popularly called. The city still has 215,700 millionaires - though a year ago, that number was 227,000. For the first time in many decades, London couldn't make it to the 'Top 5 Wealthiest' list either. Los Angeles took its place at number five.

In fact, London lost the most number of millionaires (11,300) compared to any other European city. At 10,000, Moscow was second, despite Russia being at war.

REASONS FOR THE EXODUS

Business opportunities, especially in the IT sector, was also one of the reasons London was affected. "The growing dominance" of Asia and America's lead in tech "caused several tech entrepreneurs and millionaires to reconsider their base," said Andrew Amoils, head of research at New World Wealth.

Writing to news agency AFP, he claimed that "Brexit has arguably had an exacerbating effect on this". He also highlighted that taxes in London are among the highest in the world. "Capital Gains tax and estate duty rates in the UK are amongst the highest globally. This, he said, deters high net-worth individuals, wealthy entrepreneurs, and retired people from wanting to live in London, or for that matter, anywhere in the UK.

Another indicator, he said, is the "dwindling importance" of the London Stock Exchange, which now no longer figures in the top 10 stock exchanges in the world in terms of market capitalisation. Financial hubs in Asia, like Dubai, and closer home in Europe, like Frankfurt are much sought after, he said.

ASIA AND AMERICA - A MILLION-DOLLAR CHOICE

Asia and America are surging ahead in terms of millionaire residents. In the last decade, San Francisco Bay area saw a whopping 98 per cent rise in the number of millionaire residents , while Singapore in Asia recording a 62 per cent rise in millionaires.

Seven out of the top 10 cities with the maximum number of millionaire residents were either in America or in Asia. New York City, The Bay Area, Los Angeles, and Chicago were American cities in the 'top 10' list, while Tokyo, Singapore, and Hong Kong were Asia's three on that list.

Cities like Dubai, Tokyo, Los Angeles all recorded a surge in dollar millionaires. New York City continued to hold the top spot with 384,500 millionaires.

Video - "That's Not Breakfast": Delhi Police To Man 'Drinking' Inside Metro

A man was seen on camera chilling with a glass of 'liquor' and a boiled egg inside a moving Delhi Metro train.

The police took note of it after the video went viral and a passenger complained to them.

In the video taken by a passenger, the man was seen taking three swigs of 'liquor', looking from side to side to check if he would be caught. He took a bite of the boiled egg between the swigs.

The Delhi Police posted the video on X and explained what action they have taken for 'drinking' in public, that too inside the metro.

"Eggs and alcohol in the metro? That's not breakfast - that's a breach. Break the rules, face the consequences. Rules aren't suggestions - they are the law," the police said in the post.

The accused is a resident of north Delhi's Burari.

"The accused person admitted his offence and a legal action was initiated against him u/s 59 of DMRC Act," the police said.

However, the man claimed he was drinking the apple juice Appy Fizz, and making a video of it.

"... In the video, I was seen eating an egg and drinking 'alcohol'. It was not daaru (alcohol) but Appy Fizz," the man said.

"I did the wrong thing. I request everyone not to do any such thing. Today I have to face the law because of what I did. I seek forgiveness," he said in the video posted by the police.

While it may have been Appy Fizz and he may have made the video for views on social media, the video made it look like he was drinking in public and encouraging it.

Delhi Metro has seen social media influencers do all sorts of antics for views. Commuters say they are a nuisance during rush hours.

Gujaratis Make Electoral Debut In Canada As Punjabis Seek Re-Election

Gujaratis have emerged as a major bloc, even as Punjabis remain a force to be reckoned with in Canada's political sphere, as immigrants of Indian origin steadily gain ground in the North American country which will hold federal elections later this month.

The Indian diaspora in Canada is vibrant and diverse - from Punjabis and Gujaratis, to Bengalis and Malayalis. While most migrants within the Indian-Canadian community are either students or highly-skilled employees, Gujaratis and Punjabis usually have a business background.

Over the last two decades, Punjabis were the only ones who ventured into the political arena, but come 2025, Gujaratis are making a debut. Brampton in Ontario and Calgary in Alberta, both with a sizeable Indian-Canadian population, have emerged as battleground cities as four Gujarati-origin candidates are contesting for parliamentary seats.

POLITICAL DEBUT

Most of the Gujarati-origin candidates are first-generation immigrants. While Punjabis have a clear advantage in terms of numbers, representation, and a history in Canadian politics - from MPs, to ministers, some as senior as a Cabinet rank, Gujaratis have spent decades at the grassroots, laying the groundwork with an enterprising outlook and community service. They have also significantly gained ground in terms of social leadership.

The four Gujarati-origin Indian-Canadians contesting in Canada's 45th federal election, scheduled on April 28, 2025 are Jayesh Brahmbhatt, Sunjiv Raval, Ashok Patel, and Minesh Patel.

KEY CONTESTANTS - A BRIEF HISTORY

Jayesh Brahmbhatt, contesting the parliamentary election from Brampton Chinguacousy Park, moved from India to Canada in 2001. A civil engineer by profession, Mr Brahmbhatt went on to become a successful real estate developer in Canada. Living in Canada for almost quarter of a century now, he ventured into politics and has been given a ticket by the People's Party.

Speaking to Times of India, he said, "We stand for freedom, responsibility, fairness and respect for all, and somewhere it resonates with me", adding that he is confident of a win in the upcoming polls. "I have spoken to a lot of people, and they seek change from this election," he said.

Acknowledging the rise of the Indian community and regional sub-communities in Canada, Mr Brahmbhatt said, "Political parties in Canada are now identifying Indians as an important community in the political arena, and sub-groups such as Gujaratis are making the most of this opportunity to be represented and be heard."

Sunjiv Raval, another Gujarati-origin Indian-Canadian, is contesting the parliamentary election from Calgary Midnapore. He has been given a ticket by the Liberal Party of Canada. Mr Raval is a successful businessman who owns a chain of stores. Since moving to Calgary more than 20 years ago, he has been actively involved in community work and has represented several Indian community groups.

Acknowledging the cost of living issue much talked about by Canadians, Mr Raval said, "We are fighting on issues faced by the middle class, who have been demanding better infrastructure and sports facilities, affordable housing and work opportunities for all." He added that the other political issue - immigration - requires a balanced approach. "The country needs immigrants, but there must be a balance. We hope to restore it with the right policies. We have a voice now," he said.

The third person of Gujarati descent contesting the Canadian election this month is Ashok Patel. He and Minesh Patel, the fourth Gujarati entering Canadian politics, are contesting as Independent candidates. While Ashok Patel is contesting from Edmonton Sherwood, Minesh Patel has filed his nomination papers from Calgary Skyview. Both are from a business background and are now looking to serve fellow Canadians by becoming lawmakers.

The Conservative Party of Canada had picked a fifth Gujarati as one of their candidates briefly. His name is Don Patel, a successful realtor from Gujarat's Anand. He was considered for a ticket from Etobicoke North, but didn;t make the final cut.

'NOT A SURPRISE'

This marks a massive shift in Indian community representation in Canada. From being dominated by Punjabis, the rise of Gujaratis in Canada's political landscape has led to diversity in representation, thereby giving the Canadian voters a greater choice. Gujaratis are not replacing or competing with Punjabis, but are adding to the Indian community's political base. It is also a welcome move as culturally diverse values will now shape policy.

Speaking to Times of India about the rise of Gujaratis in Canada's politics, Hemant Shah, the Director of International Trade at Overseas Friends of India Canada (OFIC), said he saw this coming. It isn't a surprise, he added. "Canada is home to more than 1 lakh Gujaratis. The community is present in almost all major cities, but more so in Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Calgary and Vancouver. Many came to the country as immigrants whereas many more arrived as students and settled here. I have been in Canada for over four decades now, and in this election, we are perhaps witnessing the highest number of candidates of Gujarati origin. Irrespective of their win, it is a significant step in ensuring representation of the community, which is the second largest after Punjabis," he said.

THE KNOWN TURF

The Punjabi representation in Canadian politics has been known for a while now. Some of prominent names include Jagmeet Singh, leader of the New Democratic Party and the first Sikh leader to head a party in Canada; Anita Anand, who is currently the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Industry; Kamal Khera, the current Minister of Health; Sukh Dhaliwal, a Liberal Party MP, and Bardish Chagger, the former minister of diversity, inclusion, and youth.

Peon Caught Evaluating Answer Sheets In Madhya Pradesh, Principal Suspended

The principal of a government college in Narmadapuram district and a professor were suspended after a viral video purportedly showed a peon evaluating students' answer sheets.

Sources said that aggrieved students had contacted local MLA Thakurdas Nagvanshi, who then lodged a complaint with the authorities.

Responding to the incident, Minister for Youth Affairs and Cooperatives Vishvas Sarang confirmed that the principal and the nodal officer have been suspended.

The minister said action has also been taken against the professor (who was assigned the work to evaluate answer sheets) and the peon.

"Instructions have been given to ensure such incidents do not recur. The government always strives to maintain the quality of higher education. This incident is unfortunate and unforgivable. The strictest action will be taken," he said.

Rakesh Verma, the principal of Pipariya-based Bhagat Singh Government College, claimed that he and Professor Ramgulam Patel were suspended on April 4.

Mr Verma stated that the answer sheet evaluation work had been assigned to a guest teacher, who then handed it over to a peon via a book lifter posted in the college.

A complaint was raised in January this year after the video clip surfaced on social media, Mr Verma added.

He further claimed that Professor Patel had been appointed as the nodal officer for the evaluation work by Raja Shankar Shah University, Chhindwara.

"I was implicated," Mr Verma claimed while sharing a letter related to Patel's appointment as nodal officer of the evaluation work, issued last August.

Mr Verma mentioned that he has written to the Higher Education Department, requesting the revocation of his suspension.

Twenty Years On, This US Couple's Disappearance Is Still A Mystery

Twenty years ago, on a Saturday night, Richard Petrone Jr and his girlfriend Danielle Imbo, accompanied by their friends, went out to a bar in Philadelphia. Once the outing was over, Mr Petrone Jr was supposed to drop Ms Imbo off at her home in New Jersey and head back to his apartment in Philadelphia. Their friends or anyone else never heard back from them after they left the bar, CNN reported.

Investigators found no forensic evidence of the couple's whereabouts after they were last seen at the bar, retired FBI special agent Vito Roselli, who was the case's first lead investigator, said.

Their truck was not spotted on any of the area's toll bridge cameras and the couple's credit cards and bank accounts registered no activity, he added.

The couple, along with Mr Petrone Jr's 2001 black Dodge Dakota pick-up truck, just disappeared into the night.

His mother Marge Petrone said she knew something was wrong when she didn't immediately hear back from him. "His phone was never off - it was always in his hands," she told CNN.

To this day, there are no leads in the case. No one in the family thinks the couple planned their disappearance and relocated to a different area to start a new life. At the time, they were parents to a teen and a toddler, respectively. According to their families, they would never just abandon their kids.

Mr Roselli, who now works in cybersecurity for an international company in Miami, says, "It stays with me. Like, 'What did I miss?' ... is constantly living rent-free in my head. But also because you want to see closure for the two families."

FBI's Philadelphia office says the matter remains a top priority. According to one of the statements, following the couple's disappearance, the FBI collaborated with law enforcement from other jurisdictions in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

They dispatched divers to investigate the Delaware River and other bodies of water between Philadelphia and Mount Laurel. Investigators followed leads in many states and examined financial, phone, and road toll data. They also looked into a flurry of theories, but nothing brought any fruitful results.

Technology was less developed in the early 2000s than it is now, which limited the scope of the investigation. While forensic science has advanced much since then, in this instance, it hasn't had much of an impact, as there is no physical evidence.

The FBI is offering a reward of up to $15,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in the case.

"Burden, Disappointment": Rohit Roasted Brutally After Another IPL Flop Show

Rohit Sharma failed to score big once again as the star Indian cricket team batter was dismissed for 17 during the IPL 2025 encounter between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Monday. It has been a disappointing campaign for Rohit and after missing the previous game due to injury, all eyes were on the experienced campaigner. Rohit started well with two fours and a six but ended up getting clean bowled by Yash Dayal. Rohit's dismissal led to a lot of criticism on social media as fans expressed their thoughts about the star batter and his major lack of form.

Jasprit Bumrah made a much-awaited return to the Mumbai Indians lineup and expectedly bowled well but Royal Challengers Bengaluru rode on quick-fire half-centuries by Virat Kohli and Rajat Patidar to post a massive 221/5 in Match 21 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Monday.

Kohli hit some brilliant shots in his 67 off 42 balls, studded with eight fours and two sixes, while skipper Patidar blasted a 32-ball 64 as RCB made the most of some insipid bowling by Mumbai Indians.

Bumrah bowled well within himself and was his usual miserly self in the death overs for figures of 4-0-29-0 while Pandya returned with best figures for MI with 2/45. RCB started well with 73/1 in the power-play, added 78/3 in the middle overs before ending it with 70/2 in the death overs.

Students Say Missed Exam Due To Pawan Kalyan's Convoy, Cops Reject Claim

Thirty students in Visakhapatnam could not reach their exam centre and failed to take the engineering entrance exam, apparently after being delayed by the convoy of Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan. The upset parents are now voicing their concern about the long-term impact on their children's academic futures.

Actor-turned-politician Pawan Kalyan holds the crucial science and technology portfolio.

Students from the Pendurthi AI Digital JE Advanced programme -- who were taking the  Joint Entrance Examination (Main) which determines admissions to National Institutes of Technology (NITs) -- said with the traffic blocked, they had reached their exam center late. All 30 were turned away from the exam hall gates and not allowed to sit for the exam, they said.

B Kalavathi, the mother of a student, claimed that her son was delayed due to traffic restrictions enforced for Pawan Kalyan's convoy. "We were stuck in traffic. It was halted because Kalyan was on his way to Araku," Kalavathi was quoted as saying by news agency Press Trust of India.

Another parent said he appealed to the Deputy Chief Minister to consider rescheduling the exam for the affected students.

In a press release, the All India Students' Federation (AISF) blamed the officials for inefficient traffic management during exam hours. The students had missed the opportunity to write the exam through no fault of their own, it said.

Karthik Yellapragada, the spokesperson of the opposition YSR Congress, said the state "deserves a better science and technology minister". "The actor-politician, true to his cinematic image, continues to treat public office like a press release event... It is time that we stop clapping to cinematic moments and start demanding real accountability," he added in a video message.

NDTV has contacted Pawan Kalyan's office but has received no response.

In a post on X, the city police claimed the students were expected to reach the exam centres by 7 am and had these 30 students been on time, there was no question of their being held up by traffic.
"As per the admit card of the above-mentioned examinations, every candidate has to report at 07:00 am and the gate of the examination centre will be closed at 8:30 am," read a rough translation of their post.

The Deputy Chief minister, the police said, "passed through the said junction at 8:41 am".

"Therefore, it is clear that the movement of the Deputy CM through that area at 8:41 AM has nothing to do with the late arrival of the students who were supposed to report at 7 am," the post read.
Traffic on the BRTS Road and Gopalapatnam-Pendurthi Service Road has not been stopped till 8:30 am to ensure free movement of the candidates to the exam centre, the police said.

"Moreover, since the commencement of these examinations on April 2, if we look at the first shift on each examination day, the number of absent candidates (including latecomers) at the centre was 81, 65, 76 and 61, which means that the number of absent students (including latecomers) is less today," it added.

Men Carrying Saffron Flags Climb UP Dargah, Raise Slogans: Cops

Members of right-wing groups in Prayagraj created a ruckus on the occasion Ram Navami today by climbing on the dargah of Salar Masood Ghazi Miyan in the Sikandra area. A video of the incident is being widely circulated online.

Reports say some people carrying saffron flags suddenly climbed on the roof of Ghazi Miyan's dargah -- located in Ganganagar zone of Prayagraj -- in the afternoon.

They raised slogans and waved the flags near the dome of the dargah.
In the video, three men carrying saffron flags are seen reaching the dome, while dozens gathered below raise slogans.

The group had reached the dargah on bikes. They made off before the police arrived at the spot.

Manendra Pratap Singh, who leads the right-wing group, has described himself as a student leader of Allahabad University, former state president of Karni Sena and a leader of BJP in his Facebook profile.

Singh uploaded the video in a Facebook post. The caption said that Salar Masood Ghazi was an invader and his dargah should not be there in the pilgrim city of Prayagraj. He demanded that the dargah be demolished immediately.

The police are investigating the matter.

Deputy Commissioner of Police DCP (Ganga Nagar) Kuldeep Singh Gunawat said some miscreants waved saffron flags and raised slogans at the dargah, reported news agency Press Trust of India.

Departmental action is being taken against the policemen who were responsible for maintaining order at the spot, he said.

The DCP said there are five shrines at the Ghazi Miyan Ki Dargah. Both Hindu and Muslim devotees come to offer 'chadar' at the dargah, he said.

Legal action will be taken after investigating this matter, the officer added.

To PM's Tamil Nadu Funds Remark, P Chidambaram's 'Economic Metric' Reply

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Sunday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his remark that the Centre allocated for Tamil Nadu's development three-time higher funds compared to the period before 2014.

The former Union finance minister said even a first-year economics student would be able to tell that the "economic metric" would always be higher when compared to previous years.

"Hon'ble prime minister and central ministers constantly say that they have given more money to Tamil Nadu in 2014-24 than was given in 2004-14. For example, Hon'ble prime minister said that his government has given for railway projects in Tamil Nadu seven times more money than before," Chidambaram said in a post on X.

"Ask a first-year student of economics. She will tell you that the 'economic metric' will always be higher than in the previous years. The GDP's size is bigger now than before. The size of the central budget is bigger every year than in the previous year. Government's total expenditure is bigger every year than in the previous year," he added.

"You are one year older than in the previous year. In terms of 'numbers', the number will be bigger but is it higher in terms of proportion of GDP or in terms of proportion of total expenditure?" the former Union finance minister asked.

Against the backdrop of the ruling DMK crying foul over the allocation of funds, PM Modi -- during his visit to the state on Sunday -- said the central government allocated three times more money for Tamil Nadu's development over the past decade compared to the period before 2014.

He noted that this increased funding had greatly contributed to Tamil Nadu's economic and industrial growth.

Despite the increased allocation, some "cry" over funds, the prime minister said, referring to beneficiaries from the state in respect of several initiatives.

Controversy Hits IPL 2025 As Fans Slam 3rd Umpire Call During SRH vs GT Game

The dismissal of Washington Sundar sparked a massive controversy during the IPL 2025 match between Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday. Washington looked in brilliant form as he dominated the SRH bowlers but he was ultimately dismissed for 49 by Mohammed Shami. During the 14th over of the GT innings, Washington slammed a short of length ball from Shami towards sweeper cover and Aniket Verma ended up taking a brilliant catch. However, the umpires were not convinced whether he cleanly collected it or not. They decided to go for a review and although some replays suggested that the ball may have touched the ground, the third umpire ruled against the batter. The dismissal led to a massive discussion on social media with several users criticising the decision.

Skipper Shubman Gill led by example with a classy half-century after Mohammed Siraj bowled with fire in his belly to return excellent figures of 4/17 as Gujarat Titans crushed Sunrisers Hyderabad by seven wickets in their IPL match on Sunday.

Sent at number four, Washington Sundar too showed his class with a 29-ball 49 as GT registered their third win in four outings, even as SRH suffered their fourth defeat in five matches.

The chase of 153 was completed with as many as 20 balls to spare, with Gill making an unbeaten 61 off 43 balls.

Bowling first, GT restricted SHR to 152 for eight with left-arm spinner R Sai Kishore (2/24) and seamer Prasidh Krishna (2/25) too performing admirably on a slow surface.

Mohammed Shami (2/28) and Pat Cummins (1/26) brought SRH back into the contest with their early strikes as GT found themselves at a tricky 16 for two in the fourth over.

Waqf Bill, Cleared By Parliament After Heated Debates, Gets President's Nod

President Droupadi Murmu has given her assent to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill which was passed by both houses of parliament after heated debates.

The new law has been challenged in the Supreme Court by the Congress, AIMIM, and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) with separate petitions.

The new law seeks to stop favouritism, misuse of Waqf properties, and encroachments upon Waqf assets. The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government has said the law is not anti-Muslim.

The amendment was introduced after six months of discussions, including the formation of a joint parliamentary committee.

In the Rajya Sabha, the bill was passed with 128 members voting in favour and 95 opposing it. It was passed in the Lok Sabha early on Thursday, with 288 members supporting it and 232 against it.

Congress MP Mohammad Jawed, AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi, and AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan filed the petitions in the Supreme Court. While they gave many reasons for filing the petitions, some common ones include allegations that the Waqf (Amendment) Bill - now an Act - was "discriminatory towards Muslim", and was a "blatant violation of the fundamental rights of Muslims".

The new law also faces protests from the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB). It announced campaigns and protests across the country, focusing on what it called "countering misinformation" and "promoting peaceful activism".

The government, however, has maintained that the law will benefit Muslim women and ensure transparency in managing Waqf properties.

Defending the bill, BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad told NDTV it would bring transparency by making Waqf boards accountable. Seeking to allay fears that the law would take away Waqf properties, he said no mosque or graveyard is going to be touched.

Walk On Knees, Lick Coins: Firm's Punishment For Underperforming Employees

A private marketing firm here has been accused of subjecting its underperforming employees to degrading treatment, including making them walk on their knees like chained dogs and lick coins from the floor.

The state Labour department has ordered a probe into the alleged inhuman workplace harassment after the disturbing visuals were aired by local television channels.

As the issue came to the light, state Labour Minister V Sivankutty ordered an inquiry into the undated incident and instructed the district labour officer to submit an immediate report on the incident.

The visuals purportedly showed a person using a leash to force a man to crawl on his knees on the floor, resembling a dog.

Later, some employees told a TV channel that those who fail to achieve targets were subjected to such punishments by the management of the firm.

According to police, the incident allegedly took place in connection with a private marketing firm functioning in Kaloor and the crime allegedly occurred at nearby Perumbavoor.

The police told reporters that they haven't received any complaint and the owner denied the allegations.

Quoting the owner of the firm, they said the alleged harassment might have taken place in a firm in Perumbavoor which used to market and sell the products of the establishment in Kaloor.

"No case has been registered so far and an investigation is underway," an officer said.

Labour Minister Sivankutty termed the visuals "shocking and disturbing" and said it cannot be accepted at any cost in a state like Kerala.

"I have ordered a probe into the incident and instructed the district Labour officer to submit a report in connection with the incident after carrying out a probe," he told the media.

Later in the day, the State Human Rights Commission registerd a case into the incident based on a complaint filed by High Court lawyer Kulathoor Jaisingh.

Meanwhile, the Kerala State Youth Commission also intervened and registerd a case on its own into the alleged harassment incident.

The panel directed the District Police Chief to submit a report in this regard.

In a statement, Commission Chairman M Shajar said legal action should be taken against such practices that are unacceptable in a civilised and democratic society.

"As a civilised society, we should collectively respond against such anti-social trends," he said.

US Moves Largest B-2 Bomber Fleet, 3 Aircraft Carriers To Indo-Pacific

While the world was busy figuring out Donald Trump's reciprocal tariff move and its fallout, the United States quietly made a massive military move in the Indian Ocean and Indo-Pacific region.

The Pentagon ordered the largest-ever deployment of B-2 bombers in the Indian Ocean. Satellite images have shown at least six B-2 stealth bombers parked along the military base runway in Diego Garcia - a joint Indian Ocean military base of the US and Britain. There may be more in shelters or hangars impenetrable by satellite or radar.

The United States has a total of 20 B-2 stealth bombers - the world's most advanced military aircraft, of which six have now been deployed in the Indian Ocean Region - that's roughly 30 per cent of its fleet, accounting for a massive strategic move.

Besides this, the US has also planned to increase its aircraft carrier presence in the Indo-Pacific region from one to three - two in the Indian Ocean and one in the western Pacific, near the South China Sea.

The Pentagon has planned for the USS Carl Vinson to head to the Middle East while the USS Harry S. Truman will continue ops from the Arabian Sea. The third aircraft carrier - the USS Nimitz and its carrier strike group fleet will move towards the South China Sea.

But this is not the end of US' massive deployment surrounding Asia. Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said that US Secretary of Defence Peter Hegseth has "also ordered the deployment of additional squadrons and other air assets that will further reinforce our defensive air-support capabilities." He however, did not elaborate what these squadrons or assets would comprise.

WHY THE SUDDEN MASSIVE DEPLOYMENT?

After the sudden and massive military deployment, the Pentagon justified it saying "This has been done to improve America's defensive posture in the region. The United States and its partners remain committed to regional security, and are prepared to respond to any state or non-state actor seeking to broaden or escalate conflict in the region."

YEMEN AND THE HOUTHIS

Though no country or terrorist organisation was named directly, several defence analysts point to the situation in the Middle East and south Asia - especially Iran and Yemen. Over the last fortnight, US President Donald Trump has steadily increased military action against the Yemen-based Houthis - a militant group backed by Iran - which has been targeting American merchant and military ships over US' support to Israel. Iran and all its "proxies" have been supporting Hamas - a US-designated terror organisation in Gaza, which is currently at war with Israel.

But defence experts say that the scale of the US military deployment is far too big to be just for the Houthis or for Iran. They argue that two B-2 bombers - each with a payload capacity of 40,000 pounds - would have been more than sufficient to tackle the militants in Yemen.

Last week, Donald Trump had openly warned the Houthis and its backers in Iran. In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, President Trump wrote, "Stop shooting at US ships, and we will stop shooting at you. Otherwise, we have only just begun, and the real pain is yet to come, for both the Houthis and their sponsors in Iran."

IRAN'S NUCLEAR FACILITIES

Over the last month, Donald Trump has mounted pressure on Iran to renegotiate its nuclear deal - a move that Tehran has outrightly rejected. In an interview to Fox News last month, President Trump had said, "There are two ways Iran can be handled: militarily, or you make a deal. I would prefer to make a deal, because I'm not looking to hurt Iran."

Donald Trump made the US exit what he had called a "bad nuclear deal" with Iran during his first term. He now wants Iran to engage in talks in order to bring a new and improved nuclear deal.

In his 2017-2021 term, Donald Trump withdrew from a 2015 deal between Iran and world powers that placed strict limits on Tehran's disputed nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief. President Trump also reimposed sweeping US sanctions.

But since then, Iran has far surpassed that deal's limits on uranium enrichment.

President Trump now wants a new deal, and has not ruled out the use of force. Washington may consider destroying Iran's nuclear facilities and labs, and thereby finish off Iran's nuclear weapons programme, should Tehran not be willing to talk.

Speaking about Iran, Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said on Thursday that "The Secretary of Defence continues to make clear that, should Iran or its proxies threaten American personnel and interests in the region, the United States will take decisive action to defend our people." Though he did not mention anything about nuclear talks with Tehran.

CHINA AND RUSSIA

Such a massive deployment of America's most advanced fighter aircraft, bombers, and aircraft carriers, is also aimed at sending a signal to China and Russia, who are Iran's allies in the region.

Washington's move to deploy the USS Nimitz Carrier Strike Group in the western Pacific also sends a clear message to Beijing that the US is serious about safeguarding its interest in the Indo-Pacific region.

And the deployment of the USS Carl Vinson in the Middle East sends a similar message to Moscow.
