Punjab Kings Out Of IPL Playoffs Race? Scenarios Explained After Loss vs RCB

Punjab Kings suffered a massive blow to their IPL 2026 Playoffs dreams as the Shreyas Iyer-led side slumped to their sixth consecutive loss on Sunday. Venkatesh Iyer and Virat Kohli slammed half-centuries while Rasikh Salam Dar took three wickets as Royal Challengers Bengaluru registered a 23-run victory in Dharamsala. The loss means that PBKS are currently fourth with 13 points from 13 matches. When it comes to the Playoffs race, PBKS will have to defeat Lucknow Super Giants in their last group stage match. However, it will not be enough as their qualification will depend on other results and Net Run Rate (NRR).

If PBKS win their match, they will need other teams to drop points. If Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders win just one out of their remaining matches, they will be below the 15-point mark. While CSK and KKR have two matches left in the group stages, RR have 3 left including the match against Delhi Capitals on Sunday.

If Sunrisers Hyderabad lose both of their remaining matches, they will be stuck at 14 points and a win for Punjab Kings in their  last game can book their Playoffs spot considering only one other team reaches 16 points.

If KKR win both of their matches and PBKS win their remaining game, both teams will have 15 points. In that case, NRR may end up deciding which team finishes in the Top 4.

"Obviously, they got off to a great start and then started taking on the bowlers right after the powerplay. I think getting to 222 was a commendable performance and we weren't able to take wickets in the bowling that much, but yeah, I think the match was lost in the powerplay. (on the difficult chase after losing early wickets) Absolutely. We were three down and the majority of our run scorers were Prabhsimran and Priyansh. The starts they used to give us in the powerplay, obviously we couldn't get this time and also me coming in and getting out early. Really disappointed, but commendable performance by Shashank and Stoinis and also a few others in the middle. I think we were up there with almost 10 an over, but yeah, fell short."

"Tremendous bowling by Bhuvi and Hazlewood. (on staying positive ahead of the next game against Lucknow) No, definitely. I'm always positive irrespective of the results. It doesn't dictate how my personality is and I always approach with a strong attitude. I'm not someone who dwells too much in the past. This is over, this is gone. Tomorrow again I'm going to see the sunrise and there's always light at the end of the tunnel," Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer said.

Iran, Trade, Taiwan On Cards As Trump Set To Meet Xi Jinping In Beijing

US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping are set to tackle thorny issues dividing the two superpowers when they meet in Beijing on Thursday, with Iran, trade and Taiwan on the cards.

Xi will greet Trump with pomp and ceremony as they meet at 10:00 am (0200 GMT) in the opulent Great Hall of the People, a lavish welcome that belies the deep tensions between the world's biggest economies.

The two leaders will also enjoy a state banquet at the hall in the evening, and Trump will visit the historic Temple of Heaven, a World Heritage site where China's emperors once prayed for good harvest.

The US president arrived for the two-day summit on Air Force One late Wednesday accompanied by top CEOs, including Nvidia's Jensen Huang and Tesla's Elon Musk -- symbols of business deals Trump hopes to reach.

He was given a red carpet welcome, with 300 Chinese youth in white uniforms chanting "welcome" and waving small Chinese and US flags in unison as he descended the steps of the presidential plane pumping his fist.

On Friday, Trump and Xi are set to have tea and a working lunch before the US president heads home to Washington.

The trip to Beijing marks the first by a US president in nearly a decade, after Trump visited in 2017, accompanied -- unlike this time -- by his wife Melania.

Following that first visit, Trump unleashed a barrage of tariffs and restrictions on Chinese goods. He did so again after returning to the White House last year, triggering a trade war before Xi and Trump agreed to a truce in October.

'Big Hug'

Trump has said he expects a "great big hug" from Xi as he banks on what he believes is a strong personal relationship with the Chinese leader who he has admiringly said rules China with an "iron fist".

Top of his wish list will be business deals on agriculture, aircraft and other topics, with a host of top businessmen in the US leader's delegation.

Aboard Air Force One en route to Beijing, Trump vowed on social media to push Xi to "open up" China to US firms "so that these brilliant people can work their magic".

The Chinese foreign ministry said Wednesday it "welcomes" Trump's visit and that "China stands ready to work with the United States...to expand cooperation and manage differences".

But Trump is dealing with a different and more emboldened China to the one he visited nine years ago, with a host of unresolved trade and geopolitical tensions between the two countries.

The Iran war in particular has threatened to weaken Trump's position in talks with Xi, having already forced him to postpone it from March.

The US president said he expected a "long talk" with Xi about Iran, which sells most of its US-sanctioned oil to China, but insisted that "I don't think we need any help with Iran" from Beijing.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio struck a somewhat different tone.

"We hope to convince them to play a more active role in getting Iran to walk away from what they are doing now, and trying to do now in the Persian Gulf," US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told broadcaster Fox News in an interview aired Wednesday.

Tariff Truce?

The long-simmering trade war between the two countries will also be top of the agenda, after Trump's sweeping tariffs last year triggered tit-for-tat levies that exceeded 100 per cent.

Trump and Xi are set to discuss extending a one-year tariff truce, which the two leaders reached during their last meeting in South Korea in October, although a deal is far from certain.

On Taiwan, another issue that has bedevilled ties, Trump said Monday he would speak to Xi about US arms sales to the self-governing democracy claimed by China.

That would be a departure from historic US insistence that it will not consult Beijing on its support for the island, and one which will be closely watched by Taipei and US allies in the region.

China's controls on rare earth exports, AI rivalry and the countries' raucous trade relationship are also among the topics expected to be taken up by the two heads of state.

Both sides will be looking to come out of the summit with whatever wins they can, while also stabilising an often tense relationship between Beijing and Washington that has global implications.

Trump will also be hoping to leave with a firm date for a reciprocal visit by Xi to the United States later in 2026, to prove his rapport with his Chinese counterpart.

Bomb With 7-Hour Timer Found Near Pune Hospital, Removed By Disposal Squad

A bomb equipped with a seven-hour timer was found outside a hospital in the Kamdhenu Estate area of Pune's Hadapsar on Wednesday, causing panic in the vicinity.

The suspicious object was discovered near the hospital premises. Police immediately alerted the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) and the fire brigade. Teams, including a dog squad, reached the spot and cordoned off the area.

BDDS personnel examined the object and shifted it to an open, secure location away from the hospital for further checks. Senior officers also visited the site as investigations began.

Preliminary findings indicate the device was a live bomb containing explosive material and a functional timer.

"A low-grade explosive IED was found in the city; investigation is underway on a war footing. The bomb was defused in an open field," said Pune City Police Commissioner Nitesh Kumar.

Crime Branch and local police are now working to determine how the bomb was placed there and who was responsible.

No casualties or injuries have been reported. Authorities said the situation is under control, and operations are ongoing to trace the origin of the device.

Watch: Rare Waterspout Forms Off Odisha's Puri Coast, Stuns Tourists

Tourists and locals were left spellbound on Saturday as a rare waterspout formed off the Astaranga coast in Odisha's Puri district. As dark clouds gathered over the sea, a long, elephant-trunk-like funnel descended from the sky toward the water, where a swirling vortex formed. The Meteorological Department said that the phenomenon was caused by unstable weather conditions in the Bay of Bengal and advised fishermen to remain vigilant.

In the local dialect, this phenomenon is referred to as 'Hatisunda' (Elephant's Trunk). According to eyewitnesses, dark, rain-laden clouds gathered over the sea on Saturday afternoon, and the weather suddenly turned stormy. Within moments, a long, funnel-shaped column began to descend from the clouds toward the ocean's surface.

The column bore a striking resemblance to an elephant's trunk, while a swirling vortex formed on the water's surface directly beneath it. Crowds gathered quickly, and many began recording the rare event on their mobile phones.

What Is a Waterspout?

In meteorological terms, this phenomenon is known as a waterspout. It is a powerful, rotating column of air that forms over oceans, lakes, or large reservoirs. A waterspout occurs when warm, moist air rises rapidly and interacts with an unstable atmospheric environment beneath storm clouds.

Such phenomena are occasionally observed along the Odisha coast during periods of atmospheric instability in the Bay of Bengal. Experts have advised fishermen and boat operators to remain alert the moment such a system begins to form at sea.

'Mamata Banerjee Not God': Bengal Minister Agnimitra Paul On Poll Results

BJP leader Agnimitra Paul, who on Saturday joined new West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari's core team by swearing in as a minister, told NDTV in an interview that the Trinamool Congress leaders treated Mamata Banerjee as God, but the recent poll drubbing has shown that she is neither a divine being nor above the law.

"Mamata Banerjee has already, you know, got the answer. She said so much, Abhishek Banerjee said so much. But the people of Bengal have given their mandate, and Mamata Banerjee should realise she is not above the law. She is not above India's Constitution, and she is not God. Her colleagues, her MLAs and MPs, probably tried to please her by saying that she is Maa Sarada. Maa Sarada is our God. And probably she was very happy. She never, you know, never tried to stop them. So to Mamata Banerjee, I have nothing to say. The people of West Bengal have said everything," she said.

Adhikari took the oath as the chief minister of West Bengal on Saturday, in the presence of top BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Apart from Agnimitra Paul, Dilip Ghosh, Nisith Pramanik, Kshudiram Tudu, and Ashok Kirtania also took the oath of office as Adhikari's Cabinet ministers.

Also read: Suvendu Adhikari Takes Oath As BJP's First Bengal Chief Minister

Asked if the BJP should have chosen a woman chief minister, Paul said Adhikari's experience in politics led to his appointment.

"It is completely a decision of our seniors, honourable Prime Minister, honourable Home Minister, and our President, our LOP (Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari) - of course, now he is the chief minister... People will have many opinions. If you have a woman chief minister, they will say that you should have, for a change, a male minister. So I think you need a person who has a history of politics for the last 30 years, who has led the party inside the Vidhan Sabha, outside the Vidhan Sabha, and it's a complete team effort. I don't think anybody would have been better than Mr Shubhendu Adhikari," she said.

She also talked about what should be the new government's priorities.

"The first thing is that the law and order need to be brought, the institution of the police, which has been completely politicised by the previous government, politicisation of police or the bureaucracy should be stopped...Number two is infrastructural development. There is no water, no housing, no washroom, no road, no drainage system, so infrastructural development needs to be there. And third is jobs. We need to bring back all our children who have gone to other states to work," she added.

The BJP won 207 seats in the West Bengal elections, wresting power from Mamata Banerjee, who was hoping to get her fourth term in office. The Trinamool Congress won 80 seats.

Suvendu Adhikari, a former Mamata Banerjee confidante, spearheaded the BJP's campaign with his Hindutva and anti-infiltration push.

"Kick Her Out": Mahesh Jethmalani On Mamata Banerjee's "Won't Resign" Move

The call for dismissal of Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee went up by a notch as senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani said her behaviour is "unpardonable" and a "challenge to the whole democratic system". Once an election is certified by the Election Commission, the Chief Minister ceases to be a Chief Minister, he said in an exclusive interview to NDTV's Padmaja Joshi.

"It is an insult and she deserves to be taught a lesson... I'm glad she did this. I'm glad that this is her attitude so that the Governor can dismiss her instead of her gracefully resigning... the Governor must formally dismiss her because she holds office at his pleasure," Jethmalani said. "If she insists on sticking like a lemming to her chair, then the Governor must unceremoniously dismiss her. I would like to say, given this conduct, kick her out," he added.

In case Banerjee continues to occupy her office, the Governor could send in the police and "evict her," Jethmalani said.

"She is a trespasser in the Chief Minister's office from now on. The moment the election is certified - election results are certified - she is a trespasser," he added.

Banerjee, who lost the state to BJP yesterday after three consecutive terms in power, has refused to resign from her post.

"I have not lost, so I will not go to Raj Bhavan. I will not tender resignation," she told reporters at a press conference this evening. She has claimed that 100 seats have been "stolen" from her party.

Her unprecedented move can technically get her dismissed. In any state, the Chief Minister and her cabinet work at the "pleasure of the Governor". The term of the Bengal assembly ends on May 7.

Asked about her allegation that 100 seats in the state have been "looted". Jethmalani suggested that the 71-year-old go to court if she has any grievance on that score.

"File individual election petitions for all of them if you have so much evidence. You can waste the time of the court; the court will probably unceremoniously throw you out as well. You have already been given short shrift in the Supreme Court twice before. If you want to keep making yourself a laughingstock, go ahead and do it. You have a constitutional right to move court," Jethmalani added.

Banerjee, following her defeat in the Bhabanipur constituency, alleged that the government and the Election Commission has colluded to bring about this "victory".

Earlier today, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who won a third straight term in this round of election, also told NDTV that Banerjee should be dismissed.

"If she doesn't resign, she will be dismissed. The country doesn't run according to her whims. The Governor will wait for a certain period, and after that, she will be dismissed - it is as simple as that," Sarma told NDTV.

"You don't allow fencing on the border, and then you claim seats were snatched from you? This result should have come to you a long time ago. The people of West Bengal gave you a lot. Today, they have given a mandate to the BJP," he added.

Gill Asked About His Wedding Ahead Of IPL Clash. GT Captain's Reply Is Viral

Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill was stumped by a question by broadcaster Danny Morrison during the toss ahead of the IPL 2026 match against Punjab Kings in Ahmedabad on Sunday. Gill won the toss and opted to bowl but the interaction took an unexpected turn as Morrison asked whether Gill is getting married. The GT captain was left stunned by the question before saying 'no'. The conversation ended abruptly as Morrison shifted his attention to Shreyas Iyer but the video of the interaction has already gone viral on social media. Here's a look at the full conversation between Shubman Gill and Danny Morrison -

Morrison: Still, Shubhers, there are no wedding bells around the corner? Anything that we need to know about.

Gill: No. No. Nothing.

Morrison: Good to see you.

This is not the first time that Morrison left Gill completely speechless at the toss as he asked a similar question during the IPL 2025 match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Gujarat Titans at Eden Gardens.

Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bowl against Punjab Kings.

GT made one change, handing Nishant Sindhu his debut, while PBKS brought in pacer Xavier Bartlett.

Gujarat Titans: Shubman Gill (c), Sai Sudharsan, Jos Buttler (wk), Washington Sundar, Nishant Sindhu, Jason Holder, Rashid Khan, Arshad Khan, Kagiso Rabada, Mohammed Siraj, Manav Suthar.

Punjab Kings: Prabhsimran Singh (wk), Priyansh Arya, Cooper Connolly, Shreyas Iyer (c), Marcus Stoinis, Suryansh Shedge, Nehal Wadhera, Marco Jansen, Xavier Bartlett, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal

"Shubman Gill: We're gonna bowl first. I think we have been chasing well in the past few games and our bowling has been top-notch, so we thought we'll continue with the momentum. (Middle-order performing in the last game) Yeah, definitely in the last match, we spoke about our middle-order finishing the game and I think our Rahul bhai, batting in the middle, it was magnificent [to] watch and him finishing the game was exactly what we talked about."

"(What do you make of pitch?) Yeah, I think initially to start with there's something in it for the bowlers, particularly on this kind of a wicket. So hopefully we'll also see how it pans out. (What mark would you give the GT so far this season?) I think it's all about, especially in a tournament like IPL, such a long tournament, it's all about peaking at the right time and I think we are doing that. And I still feel our best game is yet to come, so I hopefully it's gonna be this one. (No changes?) One change - Nishant Sindhu makes his debut," Gill said at the toss.
